If I had to name one piece of music that ever ever touches me most deeply, that ever ever brings me back to the sweetness of my existence, that ever ever stops time and lets the whole universe sourround me ... it's this one. Never in my 45 years of life have I listened to anything that moved me more ... It's sacred. Love to anybody and anything, A. von Uri, Switzerland.
there is a difference between German terms "meine(r) Liebe" and "meinem Lieben" (basic forms: "die Liebe", "das Lieben"). Together with "Ich leb' allein ... In meinem Lieben" means "I live alone in my loving". To me (native German speaker) at "I live alone in my love" there is difference at meaning ???
Just a wonderful, fully human and intensely emotional giving of this great song, which I consider the greatest of all German lieder. FiDiTanzer528's comments at the beginning are spot on, too. The subtle dissonances, the polyphony, the solo English horn, the poem, all of it just make this song such a jewel.
Ich kenne keine intensivere, überzeugendere und ergreifendere Interpretation als diese. Im Zusammenspiel mit dem wunderschönen Video einfach überwältigend... Danke dafür !
I have no words... :) A thousand thanks for the uploading and for including the lyrics with translation and such an adequate and sensitive description :)
can someone tell me who that singer is? Is it Thomas Hampson?
I love that so much, as i love all the other Ruckert-Songs. Its so heart-breaking and true. And i'm glad that i found you all on youtub who could appreciate that wonderful piece of music :)
I think it's the same case when shutting off every music around you. even in perfect silence you still hear the noise of your own blood flow. LIkewise with being alone, when there is noone around, it seems out of this solitude there blossom many beings that have been with you all the time but can be noticed in times of seclusion only. after all you can hear that it's a bittersweet melancholy, there is intense pleasure in it, and the lament of solitude is a secret song of joy as well.
I honestly have to admit this is one of the best YouTube videos I have ever watched! Both the music and the pictures. Seriously, this is marvellous. Thank you for posting.
I've nver heard Boehm conduct anything this slow. . but with a man's voice, there's so much more congestion of the muscial lines, it allows him to go that slow to extract the dark elements in the music. Ferrier and Walter take it slow; Baker and Barbirlooi take it very slow; Seefried and ROsenthal go astonishingly fast, and with great beauty, in an almost happy reading of hte song. but this is the slowest by far. And Boehm is NEVER slow. Fascinating, thanks so much for posting.
If the combination Mahler/ Dieskau wasn't enough, the images' sequence is wonderful and shows the true essence of Mahler. This lied is really special. Thank you so much for posting this piece of pure heaven.
!!Dios Mio!!
Yes. I have just decided to have this play at my funeral! I won't be there to make sure it happens but i will have to rely on another - a significant other! I love the final 3 lines and the order of importance in reverse: heaven, love, song. I also love Janet Baker version which is the first one i heard. But I am studying this one which is beautiful too.
@FranksVida it is indeed a very special song. The dissonance at 4:13 on the word "ruh"... and then "stillen gebiet".... and the the little dance between the clarinets... what to say?
Of the other Mahler songs, I think the "Zarathustras Abendlied" for mezzo from the third symphony touches upon some of the same sensibilities. If you do not know it from before, do give it a listen
@DagAndersEriks1 yes you are right with Lied at Mahler's 3rd symphony from "Also sprach Zarathustra". I strongly recommend Marilyn Horne singing "O Mensch! Gib acht!" Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conductor James Levine, 1975, here at YT
@DagAndersEriks1 : me too ! It is of such an immense beauty and touches the heart, the soul, it touches me in such a way I cannot describe what it does to me, every time, again and again.
Besides the symphonies, this is THE ONE very BEST of all of Mahler's Lieds, or Songs! There is such a magical quality over this absolutely trancendental piece! "I have overcome the world!" That is PRECISELY what this music describes!
Absolutely the best rendition of this song that I know of! Fischer-Dieskau brings the exact balance of sadness and reconciliation in the end, such a gentle singing! A moving performance for sure! The clarinets at 4:30 say something about Bohm's vision of Mahler... The English horn and the violins in dissonance at the end of the piece leave me breathless. Pure beauty and sadness in one. Thanks so much for the posting!
Absolutely an iconic performance of this beautiful, mysterious song, one for the ages. The slideshow is nice, too, but a bit too fast-paced for my taste; I would slow it down and not repeat images so much.
Bravo! I know of the composer, the song, and the singer; however, it has been a long time since I last felt compelled to see a video 3 times in a row before commenting. 5 stars for each and for all, including the exellent written information. Saved to favorites + subscribed to the channel.
This is one of my very favorite recordings of all time. One of Mahler's greatest works and Fischer-Dieskau and the Berlin Philharmonic of the 60's. I agree that words cannot describe this music
I know this song for so many years now; I've sung it myself; Its one of the most beautiful pieces of music I know and I always consider this recording as the most beautiful recording (together with the Kathleen Ferrier-recording). You've done a great job with the Video. Really beautiful

The two dissonant cello notes from 5.36 tp 5.45 are wonderful prefiguring denouement !
For me the instrumentation is perfect. Sparse. Harp and cello gorgeous. One could go on forever ... !

The note at 4.20 has to be the most beautiful note ever sung.
For a more intense version try his recording with Leonard Bernstein accompanying him with piano only.
