This is pretty bad ass in my opinion. It is good to see that producers have started taping the classical world for vocal talent. Almost any chick from a local opera company could destroy the competion on the x factor or one of those shows. Alot of women in the jazz and gospel worlds have crazy chops too but producer have been drinking out of those wells for a long time.

i like her voice and also of simone , but i prefer simone much more , because she brings changes in her voice , what makes it more interesting to listen , and heidi stays at her own same voice tone , what isn't bad but not very special.. but it is a awesome band.

@Operaphasie It depends though, she does go rather low in a couple of numbers... I think she's an operatic (true operatic, as in actually trained with opera singing in mind, rather than simply singing a slightly operatically) mezzo personally...

@jiansonz She's always had red hair, even in the River of Tuoni video! Having said that, she does seem to be going for a dark brown colour in the latest promo shots... hard to say though.

@spineyrequiem The fact she can sing low doesn't make her a mezzo-soprano actually ^^ Tessitura is not only a question of register, but of voice tone, principaly. But listening more attentively, I think you might be right though, her tone is very round and rich and the high lack liberty; they do not sound that easy to her. The best in her voice is the medium-low part, indeed. ^.^

@spineyrequiem ohw, and yeah indeed she has a classical singing formation, she wouldn't sound such otherwise, really. I'm really convinced she did have an operatic training. Her passage notes are too fluidly doing the transition between medium registrer and head voice. If she was trained more pop-like she would sound more like Simone who has a very unsure passage: Simone sound like she never knows either to transfert head voice or keep the medium sound in highs

@Operaphasie which to me isn't great sounding at all... But I guess that's a question of taste. Simone is a Pop singer to me, she only tries to sound a bit operatic sometimes but she can't make a clear decision. I always fear her cracking when she arrives in her passages, she saves herself with bunch of air in her voice, but I always fear for her; it's not technically good, we can hear...

And before you decide to respond back with a NUH UH THEY TOTALLY DO, I just went and listened to Epica, and there's several differences, but the biggest difference is the vocals. This vocalist sings opera-style whereas Epica is just a plain-old singing vocalist. This band shares more in common with old Theatres Des Vampires than they do with Epica.

She uses "plain" singing quite extensively, but she also makes use of operatic singing, but with the vibrato toned-down a little. I do agree with you that Epica and Amberian Dawn are very different from each other, though.

@Procrastinatron2000 Well Simone is classically trained to a certain extent, in that she was in a choir for six months and now is taught by a proper teacher, but I find that her voice has a lot more power and variety than Heidi's. I'm not talking about loudness and whatever but in Heidi's timbre it comes across as a very pure and tender sound pretty much all the time, while Simone's can contain a lot more raw power and beauty across a much larger scale.

And of course, After Forever took queues from bands like Nightwish(influenced by Judas Priest) and Black Metal-influenced Beauty and the Beast acts like Tristania?

It's called music. Everybody has influences, and everybody builds upon something else. Epica didn't spawn out of thin air, they had to come from somewhere.

@Viiryen Well, you forget Mark Jansen was After Forever's composer. He split with them because he wanted to form a more orchestral inspired band. Mark Jansen was the creative force behind both projects (not to forget the fact that pre Simone Simons, they recorded 2 songs under the name Saharan Dawn -using the now current Imperia band's front singer whom of which Simone replaced-)
