when you took the panoramic at the end nearly, you stated about the meter reading then you mentioned you were putting into manual mode, what mod did you originally take the meter reading please gavin?
Hey Gavin, I would love to know more about how to take a series of pic's like in pic taken @ 3.55 and @ 7.16 Questions I have are , how far apart are the focus points to each pic. ? Proccessing them ? How to stitch them together in CS3
Tutorial to achieve this would be awesome thanks and hoping to see a vid. :)
Gavin You are my hero... ever since i came across you online i have not missed a single update, i follow you on twitter, facebook and of course via your site. You have helped me so much, i am an amateur but i have managed to shoot 2 weddings and have also purchased my own home portrait kit - my photo's are coming alone nicely. So keep them coming....Oh and if you ever fancy a trip to Scotland let me know, i would love to meet you in person and get advantage of all that knowledge you have.
Thanks for including exposure info, very helpful. With ISO so high noise must be a factor. Can you offer any tips or suggest any VID TUT on "Noise Reduction".
For the HDR type image are you just using changing exposure compensation? Also how do you go about merging the images together if you are not using a tripod?
I got a Nikon D5000 at Xmas. I have tested ISO's of up to 3,200 and it still seems to perform well. Hopefully with this and VR on the 18-55mm II kit lens will get me similar results shooting RAW and a little minor tweaking in Lightroom 3 and Photoshop CS4.
People are asking how shooting at a wide aperture. I always thought that if there is nothing in the foreground then a wide or smaller aperture won't make any difference. The wider aperture will just help let in more light reducing shutter s
Great Work Mr. Gavin!! I love your 15 minute photo challenge. I'm new to photography and I keep hearing you say, that you will take one of the back ground and another for the subject. I know that the lighting is the main reason but how do you overlap them in photoshop to get the best out of both photos? Keep up the great work. Look forward to the next one.
You must have a very steady hand but how good are the shots taken handheld at 1/20sec in reality. They look o.k. at you tube size. Enjoy your videos immensely.
I really like what you are doing with the colors on most of your pictures, to bring them out and look soo sharp.. is that all done in photoshop or lightroom?
hello gavin... i really like ur videos.. because every details about the photography are described with simplicity... i cant afford SLR camera.. so cant do much of ur tricks with my sony-h50... but still i love to follow ur works.. best regards and thnks again
You are right. Think of it like this. Shutter speed of "1" is one second. 1/2 is 1/2 second. 1/200 is 200th of a second. The higher you go on the bottom number, the faster the shutter speed. Therefore the LOWER the F-stop you need. Ex. Shutter speed of 1/1000th at F22 indoors is going to be VERY dark. 1/1000th at F2.8 will be a much better picture. Same settings, crank the ISO up to 3200 and you get a VERY nice Image. Hope this helps.
Thanks so much! That is a great way to think of it. I am more of a Photoshop person than a Photographer but I am trying to learn. Just signed up for a class so Im sure that is going to help me a lot.
@PhotoGavin - YAY!!! I've been loving my Black Rapid. They make a women's model that takes into consideration our, ummm, chest bumps. First strap I've had that works with me instead of against me.
Love your vids, Gavin - they make me want to explore, dare, experiment instead of mince along trying to avoid mistakes or decide in advance that I have no hope of making a decent pic in given circumstances. You're a wonderful teacher.
Love your shots Gavin. Really impressed with your keen sense of knowing what's missing (ie in the photo where the person was walking down the hall). I learn a lot of from your videos. Thanks!
Like all the Gavin fans here, I love your photos. BUT BUT BUT you always go to such beautiful places to take photos. How about going to the must uninspiring ugly place you know where nothing is beautiful to the average eye, and show us your stuff!
@Bently100 That's not quite true. Do a search for my 15 minute challenge in "Kens field" to see somewhere where the photo potential is far from obvious.
@beppemaniglia Because I was using the wide angle end of the zoom. As you zoom in the depth of field reduces. Try it for yourself and see what I mean.
Beautiful shots! I wish I could still hold a camera steady enough to shoot hand held slower shutter speeds. Unfortunately I have developed tremors in my hands that makes it impossible.
Hello Mr. Gavin Hoey, how about make a book about your workflow? post process? right equipment for the job and everything about photography. i will buy one! =)
@Fr4gg3r2 Seconded on how on earth you manage to take such clear photos at such slow shutter speeds, I have an IS lens but even I struggle below the 1/80 mark. Fantastic photos on this video by the way (especially the graffiti and the statue in the crypt) - probably some of the best from your 15 minute challenge shows.
@Fr4gg3r2 In the spirit of three part responses 1) IS (Image Stabilization) or VR (Vibration reduction) lenses 2) zoom magnifies camera shake, wide angle reduces it and 3) use the eyehole viewfinder instead of holding it out and using the screen; your face is another point of stabilization
Absolutely great pictures Gavin, wonderfully dramatic.
At 2:07, the stain glass window, did you warp it in Photoshop? Obviously the way you took the picture, it should have been a fair bit narrower at the top than your end result shows.
Love that image at 2:52! I see what you mean when you said, "Just need a figure in there..." - would've been completely different without that person!
Another excellent one Gavin. And do you know why people like your videos so much, it's because you keep things simple and do not use fancy cameras and lenses that only some of us can buy.... Plus you really look like a very nice guy ;-), and the cameraman (thanks Sam) is very good... I can't keep myself from watching those videos again and again. Keep the excellent work and can't wait for the next one. Big bravo for your DVDs as well.
Very inspirational video yet again. I think we all forget to give credit to YOUR cameraman as well - he shows pretty good perspective of you and the object you usually capture - which is half of the work in photography. Anyhow - would you be able to show how you blended the photos where the stained glass was well exposed and then the one where the chamber was well exposed... the HDR like, but not exactly :-)
Hey gav, i am loving your vids. Can i ask you a question?
You know when you took two shots to to merge two different exposures? Assuming we are shooting raw, whats the difference between taking two shots with different exposures, or taking one and then say over exposing in Photoshop, saving a copy, then merging them?
I use a Canon EOS Rebel XTi with an 18-55mm lens, and although mine has limited ISO capabilites (100-1600), when I use higher ISO settings my images tend to be grainy. REALLY grainy. Is there any way to get around this? Technique or PS/LR post-editing feature?
Probably will be upgrading soon (Canon EOS 60D with an 18-135mm lens), so might that fix the problem?
Thanks so much, and keep up the amazing work; you're extremely talented and I'm a huge fan!
@TurboLag23 hey i'm not gavin. But the grainyness is due to noise. This meaning that certain parts of the photo become become grainy. The higher the ISO, the higher the noise. thus you have to balance ur setting out. This can be done using a lower F number lens like the 50mm f1.8 More like can enter the lens and u wun have to use higher iso.
Can you show us how to make the images that look like a dark black and white in photoshop please?or have you done one already and if so what is the video called?
Amazing video, thanks. I really like your style of processing. Could you please make a video about how you achieved the final effect, or is it your little secret? ;)
Uh! I got that lens! By the way, what a wonderful christmas gift for us viewers! Some lovely pictures! Keep up the good work, I really enjoy these kind of videos and I'm sure a lot of others do as well. Merry Christmas Gavin! :)
Awsome pictures! - Especially from the crypt :) Merry christmas and thanks for alot of great video's and tons of inspiration! - hope to see more in 2011 :) Cheers from Sweden
Gavin your photos are amazing id love to go on a shoot with you to pick up some tid bits of info and pick your brain as to what you do. Thank you much fopr the video s you post as they have helped me grealty.
First time seeing one of your videos and glad that I did. One question though, I noticed that you have your camera strap attached to the bottom of your camera. Can you please fill me in on what /how you accomplished that? Is there a specific part that I can buy to achieve the same you did? Keep up the good work!
Another great video, love these 15 minute challenges- nice to see how a talented photographer works, plenty about on the technical side of photography and composition 'rules' but not much on putting into practice . I know its a pro-spec camera, but the high ISO quality does look very impressive!
I live in York and have been to York Minster many many times taking pictures but still cannot seem to get shots that even resemble how yours look Gavin. Generally I use Nikon D90 with 18-105 kit lens and also use Lightroom and Photoshop CS5. I guess it must be me and my settings.
@joinerkev Don't forget Gavin's shooting with a full frame camera. FF cameras have excellent IQ and DOF. Nikon's equivalent (actually better than the 5D MarkII, IMHO) is the D700.
(FYI: I'm a Canon shooter... waiting anxiously for the 5D MarkIII)
Fantastic Shots Gavin! Love the Crypt thing you took picture of very cool angles and looks superb in Black and White.. Keep up the great work.. Fantastic! Would like to know how Panarama shots are done in photoshop .. have to look into that :)
May I say if you put your clip on mic on the right side you not keep hitting it with your camera strap. It would be good if you did a follow up with some of the photos you take and show how you PP them.
And yes it is amazing how good the Canon is for low light I have two 7D's and have pushed it up to 12800 with good results....
This has got to be by far, the most enjoyable video I ever seen on your channel.
I swear that at times I really felt the message you were trying to send with those pictures, way to go Gavin, the ambience throughout the entire clip was just so peacefull and beautifull that I felt compelled to pick up my camera and go out shooting something like this. Really great work mate, unbelievable pictures too. ;)
I'm really pleased I subscribe to this channel, great episode, great no non-sense jargon and the proof is in the eating images! I have put this on the "Places to Visit" list. Keep up the good work Gav
@MrKLMFokker What can I say, the 5D mkII was on offer at a good price...The 40D is still kicking around, but it has a max ISO of just 1600. The 5D mk II can shoot at 6400ISO so was the better tool for the job.
How do you get the old feel and clarity in the picture of the writing carved into the stone.??

What if you can't use ISO 3200 because you don't have such expensive camera?
I only have a 40D. And everything over 800 gets grainy.
How do you manage without tripod then?
Best regards!
thure1982 1 year ago
@thure1982
Probably better to get a bit of grain than not get a shot. I regularly use my 30D at ISO 800 or more. There's nothing wrong with a bit of grain.

I am so intimidated by the FRACTIONS on shutter speed, etc. Should have paid more attention in 6th grade I guess!
So is this correct - the smaller the denominator the longer the shutter stays open? Lower=slower????

You said you metered for the light from the windows and took another shot to meter with the ambient light. Can I ask how you did that?

Another video on how you "Photoshopped" the images would be AWESOME!

Awesome pictures, especially the ones from the crypt. Did you do anything to the colors in postproduction?

@hagarrocks he's using the black rapid strap, over the shoulder instead of around the neck, very comfortable.
Great photos Gavin! Really inspiring.

First time seeing one of your videos and glad that I did. One question though, I noticed that you have your camera strap attached to the bottom of your camera. Can you please fill me in on what /how you accomplished that? Is there a specific part that I can buy to achieve the same you did? Keep up the good work!

amazing photos once again. i love the way you approach them and your photographers eye.

Another great video, love these 15 minute challenges- nice to see how a talented photographer works, plenty about on the technical side of photography and composition 'rules' but not much on putting into practice . I know its a pro-spec camera, but the high ISO quality does look very impressive!

personally my fav. challenge so far!

I live in York and have been to York Minster many many times taking pictures but still cannot seem to get shots that even resemble how yours look Gavin. Generally I use Nikon D90 with 18-105 kit lens and also use Lightroom and Photoshop CS5. I guess it must be me and my settings.
joinerkev 1 year ago
@joinerkev Three things to consider... 1) shoot RAW 2) avoid flash 3) bracket your exposures that should point you in the right direction.
PhotoGavin 1 year ago 7
@joinerkev Don't forget Gavin's shooting with a full frame camera. FF cameras have excellent IQ and DOF. Nikon's equivalent (actually better than the 5D MarkII, IMHO) is the D700.
(FYI: I'm a Canon shooter... waiting anxiously for the 5D MarkIII)

Very good video again as always.
May I say if you put your clip on mic on the right side you not keep hitting it with your camera strap. It would be good if you did a follow up with some of the photos you take and show how you PP them.
And yes it is amazing how good the Canon is for low light I have two 7D's and have pushed it up to 12800 with good results....
devonmale69 1 year ago
@devonmale69 It wasn't until I got back to the office I realised my mic error. Will remember that next time.
For PP I just did my usual quick edits in Photoshop / Lightroom. Check back on some of my previous videos for PP tips.
PhotoGavin 1 year ago
@PhotoGavin No headphones or ear piece then? what do you video it on as I see it was problematic with focusing in the low light..

i really enjoy your videos, cant wait to get my new lens this christmas eve. very inspiring work!

Keep up the good work Gav
bigsean9999 1 year ago
how do you get your picture so clean?!?
Bobesque 1 year ago
@Bobesque It's a combination of correct exposure in camera and Photoshop CS5 / Lightroom 3 noise reduction features.

Omg where is the good old 40d?? Nice to see that you have bought your self a new camera. Can you please show us some more of your editing?
MrKLMFokker 1 year ago
@MrKLMFokker What can I say, the 5D mkII was on offer at a good price...The 40D is still kicking around, but it has a max ISO of just 1600. The 5D mk II can shoot at 6400ISO so was the better tool for the job.
PhotoGavin 1 year ago
@PhotoGavin canon 40d=max iso 3200; Canon 5dmk2=max iso 25000
magix93 1 year ago 2
@magix93 but i think he means ISO that you can still use for a picture that doesn't look like you took it with your mobile phone
Spaeckli 1 year ago
@magix93 Ah that's the expanded ISO range. Trust me 1600 ISO is as high as the 40D goes ;-)

See you exchanged your 24-105 for the 28-135, was that just to get the extra .5 exposure at the wide end?
fosie1955 1 year ago
@fosie1955 28-135mm because my 24-105L is STILL being repaired. Grrrrr!
