The first time she brought her first born son to her chest he transformed into an animal. No warning, just poof, rabbit. Because of this she could either think 1) she cursed him. or 2) He is a monster that came out to look like a human. Because of this we saw her sanity slip away into nothingness and is the reason she abandoned him. Tragic yes, Illogical, no.
