The reason no other X-Com game will live up to the Original is because the First X-Com game was just that, the first time anyone had experienced anything like it. You can never make it feel the way it felt that first time even if a newer game is actually a better version of the original. Even with dated graphics and sound effects it will still seem like the only game of it's kind.
I wish they made a new Ufo game. And just keep it simple and easy, with tech to develop and places to conquer. And keeping the graphics easy to "overlook".
@TheBlackSpiral There is a "remake" out. Came in 2007. It's called UFO: Extraterrestrials. If you consider getting it, get the Gold edition as it includes a mod, that makes the game more like X-Com.
@JustFYIgaming Yeah, I've played that and it certainly wasn't terrible, but still wasn't good enough. I haven't played it with that mod though, so perhaps I should look into the Gold edition anyway.
@TheBlackSpiral Well, it depends how u look at it. Naturally, if you are trying to reproduce your nostalgic experience you had with X-com, then it will not live up to your desires.
But if you take it for what it is, a further development of X-com, but simplified, I think you will enjoy it. I only started playing it a few weeks ago, bought it on sale at Gamersgate. I played X-com a bit first, then UFO:Extraterrestrials - I was surprised how similar it was.
@JustFYIgaming I'm under the impression that one of the things that made the original X-Com feel the way it did, was it's simplicity and the fact that it played on planet Earth, rather then some boring made-up dustball of a planet. This game isn't terrible. I did actually enjoy it, but it didn't manage to hold me. I'm something of a grahics whore, I'll admit, and visually I find this game hard to take serious. But I wouldn't say it's absolutely dreadful.
All this game is really missing is a cover system, enemy AI that can work in tandem with each other more effectively... and, let's face it, it gets extremely tedious to have to go into your equipment menu every time to equip a grenade, throw it then re-equip your gun. Only current workaround is to mount a grenade launcher on your gun, but then you lose option of underbarrel laser sights or gyrostabilizer add-ons. Also a bit boring when you play the same map in multiple missions. In a row.
If you are losing to Psionics by the time you have Drone technology on that level....... You're either doing something wrong, or purposely using weak troops for the vid.
I really miss the original X-Com experience. Melodrama aside, I remember playing UFO Defense at night the first time I ever played it and it was such an amazing time that it will be something I'll never forget. Everything from the music, the aliens and the mystery behind them, the customizations of the soldiers and bases, the research, etc... Has this been reincarnated with these remakes or first-person shooters?
NO.
Matter of fact, it's only made the loss harder to handle... What a shame!
@caseyburk Try Ufo: Alien Invasion - OpenSource remake of Ufo: enemy unknown based on Quake 2 engine. It's not perfect and still buggy, but hell... It's great! Much better than this commercial crap.
@TheTechBrain - I checked that out and it looks promising. How are the maps? Are they anything like in the original X-Com games? I.e. - larger, smaller, etc.? Btw, thanks for the heads-up on this.
@caseyburk I think that maps are pretty the same (in the matter of size) but more complicated (more places to hide and snipe enemies/your troops). You must try it yourself :) I played this almost year ago and I was very happy that I found this. I'm sure they make a lot of progress since then.
@Chronische - I guess these things are pretty hard to create. They must juggle a lot between project requirements and general technical demands. I just wish they'd go back to their roots... I miss the experience of playing great games like the original X-Com.
All these X-COM remakes seem to be missing that campy B-movie style that took itself really seriously. Even with mercs in stupid purple armour they acted like Rambo.
@rankaratar Actually, this is a sequal to xcom, rather than a remake. Nice call tho. Also, I agree, its like the mystique of watching an old bruce campball movie, never got old.
@Mashermat especially if you have shields, you can use normal armor with double shield what have much more protection for most of dmg types exluding fire;
theres a nextgenish xcom inspired game coming out at the end of this year called xenonauts, it actually looks very promising, especially if its decently moddable :)
I had this game a while ago. Nice graphics but it doesn't have the depth and lastability of the original X-COM game. But then arn't these new UFO games just a bastardization?
A lot of people complain that the problem with Afterlight was how they went for a more cartoony style, but the real problem is that it just feels tedious as hell compared to Aftershock and Aftermath. Aftershock is definitely the best of the three.
Wow this game looks cool do you have to move everyone at once or can you move one at a time? i loved incubation wihich was turn based and this game looks the same so i might buy it=]
not aliens. Mutants, cyborgs and more mutants. The aliens use their own weaponry. Earth inhabitants in UFO Aftershock are not really that united . And its also up to you if you want to accept mutants and cyborgs in your ranks or simply wipe them out along with the aliens
oh it was the beta wer they had crappy units starting sets of territory and 500 sets of each peice of gear shame the real version is notoriously buggy even with patches otherwise it could have been a realy could game and my computer wouldnt have been thrown out the window
lol..i dont got that many peoples.. i got 1 sniper woman upgraded 3 times with sniper skill...
aaand..dude i cant remember.. lol.. atleast one i called Yoko..hes my favourite..hes upgraded 6 times with 3 different skills.. and he freaking owns with that reticulan pistol..freaking kill peoples with 2 shots lol
research robotics and other tech needed, then construct it. This game is one of the best strategy/rpg games i ever played-UFO Aftertrilogy (aftermath, aftershock and afterlight) Aftershock is the best one, but the bugs are misery to my gameplay activity within Aftershock
ooh..ive played ufo aftermath too..but i can remember it has slightly worse graphic.. btw should i research laser weapons? they havent really interested me so far..is it worth it?
btw psy weapons are they also worth researching? lol.. this game is very good yeah..but i think i misses something.. its like all the same..just fighting on the battlefield..getting new troop/weapons... well i guess it will be more fun when i get more into it:)
give laser weapons a "medium" priority....you are going to need them against enemies that are resistive or immune agaist "what ever are you using". Psionic weapons are very weak. It pretty much annoys me that i cant win Aftershock, because of mothership bug :( . (i did win aftermath and afterlight) BTW: how many bases do you have? In aftershock you must maintain you bases mikro and makro handedly, or you going to bancrupt (micro- like shuting down unnecesary transports and ways......)
you can shut it down by clicking on track button and clicking into the provincia you want to shutdown that track. I try to better explain it-shuting down the track is the same process like creating one :) using the track button :) :) :)
whats you team? i did have: 1: cyborg, specialist on wargot weapons 2: Human - sniper - specialist on laser weapons 3: cyborg - scientist - specialist on human hybrid weapons, namely plasma 4: Robot-a drone specialist on projectile weapons - submachine guns (hover drone :) ) 5: psionic, -medic specialist on psionic equipment 6: human - komandos, katana and throwing (he is fast as hell) 7: human- leader -rifles-projectile/warp BTW: 6 human can kill wargots before they rise their weapons.. :)

This is just agonizing for me. If you want to play a game that isn't called XCOM but is pretty darn close, play UFO Extraterrestrials.

@Sephy7777
for closeness to original UFO:ET, with mods its actually a decent game that plays very similar to the original xcoms.
while i wasnt a big fan of UFO:AS or UFO:AM, afterlight was actually decent, took them 3 games to get their engine bug free (or less buggy)
