Hi nice vid man, how do I export my finished zprojected file? I finished a ball using the zproject brush, Now I need to export it as a .OBJ file. I did it but as soon as you import the .OBJ back into zbrush, all the zprojected texture is gone & only the ball shows?
Maybe someone can help me :\ i cant find the Zproject Tool and when i import a picture with ''import Document'', zbrush changes the image by adding a red tint. Then the image is redder than normal and it will distort the result compared to the original
@Klahnto ("do you know how game designers import drawings into computer modeling programs? if you do what is it called? ")
it's probably mostly done in UV (or U/V) mapping (for better mathematical/geometrical/graphical control), where you "flatten out" the mesh on a 2D plane and draw the picture according to it, also possible with different materials on one file (multi texture) - hundreds of possibilities... (Pain in the ass at the beginning - projection mapping really is a great alternative)
But I keep getting some weird transparency effect as I paint though.
It paints the silhouette of the subtools that are directly beneath the surface instead of painting from my image in he background.
Zadd is deselected and I only leave RGB on, the transpose tool ends are correctly set up.. checked everything but i can't figure out why i keep getting the issue.
it may be a good idea to select a base colour and go to 'Color>Fill Object' so it is filled with colour before you start transferring...let me know how you get on?
I was reading at Zbrushcentral about someone having a similar issue, it seems the geniuses at Pixologic have decided to remove the procedure explained in this video for the new versions of Zbrush, now they are incorporating a supposedly " better " way, the brush paints only what is directly beneath the surface that is being painted. that's why my underlying subtools where being painted onto the main surface of my tool and it wasn't getting the info from the picture..
Zbrush has a steep learning curve. Like anything it takes time to learn and master. If you are not familiar with 3d software packages I would suggest starting with 3DsMax.
heya, i have done some 3d graphics in the past, and I am really amazed by this program, but those programs would put any size resolution texture on a polygon without loss of resolution. So...
Does this program just color each individual poly / face or what? Still awesome.
just to clear thigns up for everyone , it seems the new zbrush 3.1 and up works differently to the step by step of this tut.
Question, which retains better pixel quality, using this method or making a large canvas and using zapplink. i've always wondered about painting per poly (meaning you have to subdevide to that sucker like mad to retain the image quality) or using projection master and painting to texture.
Mate. I'm following your tutorial to the letter, on Zbrush 3.5, I select the source pixels on the BG doc and hit draw, now when I drag my curser over the 3d head nothing happens. I know there used to be issues with UV enabled etc but I've tried these. do you know what I might be doing wrong?
Glad you got it sorted, if you get time give 3D Coat a try, you can also distort the texture to match the mesh with a simple 'smear' like tool...no complicated hoops to jump through!!
I just tried it, I cleared the canvas (CTRL + N), imported an image, drew a sphere onto the canvas and pressed 'T' to make it editable (make sure RGB is on and ZADD is off) I then chose the 'ZProject' BRUSH from in the brushes, CTRL Clicked on an area of the background then painted on the sphere and it clones straight on fine...
to use a different texture, press 'T' to go out of edit mode, Clear the canvas (CTRL + N) and import another texture, draw your model on, press T, Zproject brush, CTRL click on background to set source point then draw onto object...
thanks for your responce. I'm still having trouble though, I import my BG image, and when i draw my sphere onto the canvas the BG image dissapears, is there a way to lock the imported image?
There must be a better way...I also did it by importing the image as a texture and did a 'Fill Layer' and cloned from that onto the model...there is a plugin called imageplane that might help!!
Depends on how 'into' your hobby you are, do model vehicle people spend $500 on a plane or car or boat? Do people who are into their cars buy $500 alloys or stereos? Things like 3D Coat can do the a similar thing for a fraction the price but nothing comes close to ZBrush...besides some of us use it everyday for work ;-)
If it's for work that's one thing, i think they should just make a thing that's like a non commercial hobby license for this and other programs like photoshop.
...And its much easier to achieve the above in 3D Coat, along with a deforming pen to distort your face texture to your head model/mesh even if its quite different!! Cool.
i have a reallly anoyying problem right, if i make somthing then save it, and open it again, later i cant edit it, like i cant move or rotate around it or anything, any help?
you go to the lowest subdivision, press AutoUV's, then polypaint your model then export the model as 'obj' and the texture after doing 'colors to texture' to grab the polypaint to the texture.
You seem like you know alot about zbrush. Do you know if it is possible to create a head from zbrush and then somehow import if to another program for animation like blender?
no you cant import it directly as there will be to many ploygons for animation you would have to crate a base mesh in a program ( in your case "Blender" ) and then take the mesh into zbrush and sculpt then texture and export it as a bump map ad apply this to the base mesh and then you can render it.
In maya you could use projection textures to bake out maps for the side and front then stitch them together in photoshop. But it's not quite as nice as this
of course. btw, i'm on zbrush 3.12 on an intel mac (leopard). i've found a plugin called 'imageplane' on pixologic (not yet available for mac) - is that something i need to have before i can import images to canvass?
hey, how did you import the image into zbrush in the first place. i dont seem to be able to do it. zbrush only seems to recognize psd files but even when i select a psd image it just doesnt show up on my canvass as it does on yours. why?
after the image is there i import my mesh in and hit T edit mode. it acts as 2D. i cant rotate my model or move. do u know whats causeing this problem?
i could be more cool if you use the "matcap" function you can have the same Skin material feel than your reference picture, and you can remake the subtle details with a grey tone version of the same pic .
Great stuff...im new to 3d. how do you get really rich texture resolution??? ive noticed a lot of 3d work lack quality while others look really rich...

Sphere is easy to texture, just wrapping image over it

great job mate. i was wondering, can you 'combine' zbrush with 3ds max?
like, make the model in zbrush, and animate it in 3ds max?

Thats exactly what most people do...export a low (ish) poly mesh from zbrush for easy rigging etc and the displacement/normal maps make it appear to have all the details of the HIGH RES version!!
