Using GSM Modem to send SMS of data received from Gas Sensors

hello, why do you use a dedicated GSM modem? What is the advantage of using this box and not a GSM phone? How does it cost? Cost for a SMS?

One can certainly use a GSM phone. But the problem is manufacturer may not allow to use all the features, a standard GSM modem has. There may also be problem with connecting the phone to the external circuitry.

What kind of microcontroller and GSM unit would I need? Are there any pre-made bundles that I could just purchase and program? I am using UART protocol to communicate b/w MCU and GSM modem. U can either write a lib for UART communication or u can find it on net. Using that u just have to send ur AT commands through its UART port.

How do you know how to build the correct circuit?

@kurniasan : You need to study the datasheets of sensors and other major ICs/MCUs used. Make appropriate changes during testing. And obviously internet is the best helper.

@kurniasan dude you can learn how to use an arduino then interface it thru UART with a GSM phone an use AT Commands to send an SMS message to wherever you want.

you can buy the arduino cheaply from dealsextreme website

but they take a long time so becareful and pay them with PayPal so u can grab them by the nuts. ;D
