The United States constitution states that church and state should be separate. It's only relatively recently that (some) people have come out against that viewpoint.
The Constitution does not literally state "separation of church and state," but rather "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof . . ." The former was from a letter written by Thomas Jefferson. I'm not saying there shouldn't be separation of church and state, just stating this common misconstruance.
What would be the functional difference between those two wordings? I don't see any wiggle room allowed by a strict literalist view. Either way, religion is intended to have no place in government.
I agree completely. This guy has some weird political views for his intellectual capacity. What, would he rather have McCain, that religious bigot, opportunistic bastard? Hitchens; get a grip. You very well know that Ferraro's comment was designed to undermine Barack Obama, and in a way to de-individualize him. And yes, it was racist in nature. Of course, not offensive to a priviledge white male. How predictable.
I agree with you to the point where I could have written those words, with one exception: where you wrote "liberal," I would have written "conservative." I wish there were more out there, on both sides, who could have a spirited debate, but do so with civility. It embarrasses me when another conservative resorts to name calling and demonizing. I'm glad whenever I find the same attitude from someone on the other side of the isle. Cheers.

this coming from the cheesdick who publicly spoke in favor of invading Iraq...BRILLIANT Chris...when will you acknowledge the blood on your hands? As much as i despise religion, and love hearing his critique of it, it doesnt explain (or excuse)his patently ubsurd political beliefs
what's up with the conspirator TREADYBREADY thinking our government is capable of creating the aids virus? our government is incompetent-quit developing conspiracies and believe the more common sense obvious-incompetency-just today we saw the remarks of the 911 masterminds..and then there's an article about the pentagon trying to keep iranian intelligence from the cia post 911, because the cia was viewed as incompetent for its mistakes of 911-conspirators ignore the obvious & assign wickedness
@jeffbrown8 rotfl, I just had to pause this a few seconds in to give myself time to laugh properly - Hitch's disregard for his hair is just...dare I say, Godly
Your right about the american Government, it is a shit, but in no way shape or form is our species anywhere near advanced enough to create the aids virus. Besides, it was first seen in a type of monkey/ape (there is evidence to back this with), the disease got transmitted throughafrican tribesmen hunting them for food.
It's an interesting thought, and I wouldn't be surprised if the bastards tried, the just lack the potential :)
Well lanceawatt, hitchens tries to dismiss the notion that the government created aids as if it were perposterous. The same U.S. that put small pox on blankets to kill native americans, and injected blacks with syphillis for over 40 years even after they had found the cure, and the U.S. campaign to sterilize puerto rican women for over 40 years. I mean it not an absurd argument. Hitchens is not a molecular biologist how the hell does he know.
they didn't inject them for 40yrs that is a exageration of the fact.
it is absurd to say, because one can look at the state of viral biological understanding. Only very recently have we gained the ability to "create" anything, all we could ever do with virus' in the past is to weaponize them into highly trainsmitible aerosole's.
also "aides" was known in humans in africa prior to its reaching america.
the united states government was, and im sure still is the worlds largerst distributer, and creator, of biological weapons. They have created cancer virus's, genetic target virus's, and gender specific virus's.
The United States also leads the world in cancer research, medical technology investment, biotech, word wide charity donations [Save Darfur!], education opportunities...such is the 'American Dream'.
The United States does cancer research to see what the effects on humans are, i agree, but you must ask why, studying the results of a test you developed is common in any scientific study.
Hitchens offers meaningless speculation about Obama's religious sympathies. We can only judge by what Obama actually says: he is as "deluded" as George Bush (or is that as "cynical" and manipulative of the deluded?). Get rid of the savior idea, neither of these politicions has power to overcome the great problems we face. It is only circumstance.
What is Chris talking abt,Politician dont care abt walking away if its gonna hurt their career. You only have to look at the Clintons. Vince Foster killed.Peter Paul, they never met him despite undisputable evidence.
So you think Christopher Hitchens is paid by neo cons to support the war and AIDS is a weapon......you're fucking nuts and nobody takes your opinion seriously.
Hitchens is very anti-religion and IMO he's been consistent among all religions. Although I reject the neocon agenda, I do think the WOT is legit and that Islamic fundamentalism is patently unacceptable. You don't have to be "for" the war to condemn the fanatical religious bs which is commonplace in the middle east. Homophobia, oppression of women, rejection of democracy, etc. Where's the Left on this? Relatively silent; too busy fuming over the neocons...who are "history" IMO anyway.
Well folks what do you expect? Hitchins was completely wrong in support of the Iraqi invasion and he is WRONG on this. Can we trust someone who is SOOOOOOOO wrong allllllll the time? I say throw this very intelligent man(where credit is due)opinion in the trash with his other failed ideas. Hitchins you are brilliant I love you. You're not allways wrong but you were on Iraqi and on Obama! OBAMA IN 08!
Wrong support? The removing of Saddam and todays continuing UN mandate in Iraq dont need to be successful to gain the support from ppl who believe in freedom for all.
Barack Obama has made Hitchens' point for him over the last month or so, hasn't he? Obama was a mere state legislator less than 4 years ago. Now, he's slowly being exposed for what he has always been: an empty suit, an imposter. But back to Hitchens: his command of the english language unsurpassed, his debating skills unparalleled, his mind of the highest order. Qualities to which Obama can only aspire.
Hitchens is a smart guy, there is no denying it, but he's just plain wrong here. Barack Obama is part of an American movement and people are not going to be distracted by more BS!!!!
while i admire christopher hitchens-- his independent, iconoclastic, and well constructed mind-- he's so far off base in this moment. obama's "race speech" was incredibly nuanced & genuine & beautiful. barack obama does not need to specify the statements he would denounce; he is not jeremiah wright, & doesn't need to defend himself as though he were. it's admirable that obama didn't throw wright under the bus, & chose to defend himself & the incredible complexity of race, religion, etc.
You don't go to a church for 20 years and not believe in what it teaches. There is no argument against that. I bet your jersey wearing self would feel different if he was a conservative republican.
have you listened to what wright has said in full, and not in chopped up youtube snippets? or looked at his record of military and community service? he is no falwell, and i absolutely will maintain this "double standard" likewise.
Hamas, a known terrorist organization also has a record of helping the poor. Does that makes them good too? They also have a military history too.Come up something better than that.

i love how the hitchens followers, like the ron paul followers here on youtube, beat off to moving images of their god and hit the little thumbs down symbol next to comments they don't like (and are almost always too cowardly to actually debate) as if such a childish gesture will change anyone's mind on the subject.
Ha, Ron Paul and Christopher Hitchens are diametrically opposed on every subject about which I've heard them state their positions. Did you have something to debate, or am I interrupting your whining? =) Gave you a +1, by the way.
Anyone else notice Hitchens' hair is totally messed up every time he's a guest on a show? did he forget to comb the left side of his head or something?
And for those who said that I am arrogant, let me say that this was unjust. I am not public person who is constantly trying to influence others. I just said that i don't like him. You like him and i don't mind. I thought I am allowed to say what i think. So many people are leaving coments, so did i. I can live fine wihtout his remarks. I don't need his point of view.

Oh comeon! Who listens to this frustrated alcoholic looking? Go buy yourself a comb, Hitchens. He is not looking confused all the time, he IS confused! What he has to talk about other than hate? Hate is his middle name. You can feel hate coming out of every cell from his body.
(1) What does what he looks like have to do with anything? That's strikes me as awfully superficial. (2) Perhaps he does drink too much, but again, that's a shallow and irrelevant point. (3) He doesn't seem at all confused. On the contrary, his arguments are cogent, and he was eloquent as always. (4) When was he being hateful? Can you cite an example from this interview?
I find that a lot of folks just misunderstand what Christopher Hitchens' actually says. They see him as an antagonist to their viewpoint (and often rightly so), and so they hear every word coming out of his mouth as hateful.
This interpretation is so far from the truth. Hitchens criticisms are witty, acerbic, accurate, and insightful.
That's why they think he hates, because he rains down so much pain and devastating criticism on his targets.
I am talking about Hitchens, not about just this interview. Look back. He suported Palestine, then changed his mind. I have feeling he is against everybody and himself. If you don't agree, that's fine, i have no intentions to change anybody's mind. But he does! And I am not shallow, rather very sensitive person who love truth and justice. Hitchens has a problem, in his mind only he is right and there is no room for others. Ever watched debate Galloway-Hitchens? He lost it BIG time.
If Hitchens truly is the way you're describing him, then how could he have ever changed his mind about supporting Palestine? He may be outspoken, cocky, and at times caustic, but I think it would be hard to argue that he's insular or close-minded.
Hitchens nutted all over Galloway's face, pardon my French.
Galloway didn't even ATTEMPT to debate Hitchens on any specific issue of the war, he just screamed the same sentence over and over "HITCHENS HAS BETRAYED THE LEFT AND JOINED BUSH AND THE NEOCONS!"
I apologize for not paying much attention on what was it about. Hitchens is so scary for me that i cannot concentrate when he is talking. My mind wander and only what is left is uneasy feeling. I cannot listen to him. I should point that in the first place. I don't like him and that is that. I see his expresion and movements and it is enough for me. Only reason i said that he lost is, he was sweating like crazy. I am not ignorant, i am not interested in what he has to say. I don't care.
It is probably to much to hope for, but wouldn't it be *beyond* *wonderful* if Galloway was prosecuted for multiple counts of perjury? I would love to see him do a long prison term.
Uh-huh, translation: anybody who slams Bush (and incidently Hitchens) gets a pass from you. Galloway made big money from Saddam Hussein- getting rich off meant for sick and starving children- he is a very special type of evil man. And too many moral relativists are all too willing to excuse his actions.
Why are you reading something i didn't say is beyond me. I told you before that i don't care about Galloway. Hitchens get's on my nerves. Not because what he say, because i don't like HIM. He can't say anything to please me. Didn't you have similar experience in your life? I admit, he is maybe inteligent and it is not his fault i don't like him. I just don't. I wanted to watch debate betwen him and his brother but couldn't. As soon as he started talking, i had to stop. He is too distracting.
On what grounds do you suppose he lost it? I suppose you're impressed by deranged demagogues who bluster and intimidate rather than debate.
If you love truth and justice so much (your arrogance is overwhelming by the way) then look into firstly, Galloways repeated history of taking bribes and secondly, his praise for Hamas and Hezbollah as well as suicide bombers.
You are no friend of 'truth and justice' if you hold Galloway in high regard.
I don't care about Galloway either. I am maybe inorant because i don't like Hitchens. Or maybe you are because you like him. But this is not the point. There is so many other intelectuals that is worth listening to. Hitchens is not one of them. He is paranoid. Anyway, i just expressed what i feel, I didn't express what i think. Scroll down and you'll see. Since when is feeling as same as thinking? Not since last time I checked world of politics.
He still supports Palestine, he doesn't support Hamas. He's said over and over again that he's opposed to Israeli expansionism in Gaza and the West Bank, and he's said over and over again that he doesn't believe that a Brooklyn Jew has right to a land if a Palestinian who has been living there has to give it up for him. He's switched on socialism, political correctness etc., but he's always given good reasons for whatever he believes.
Obama's minister rants and raves. So what! "Blame Whitey!" is nothing new, and it sure not against the law. Are Americans made out of fluff now? Preacher Wright was in his early 20s in the 1960s. He rants and raves to remind people. He watched what happened to Emmett Till, and Medger Evers, in person. His crazy ideas and strong words don't make Obama a secret racist, and only a brainwashed Hillary fool would keep repeating it like a Fox News "reporter". See our video>
Oh . . . mmm I know a place Ain't nobody cryin' Ain't nobody worried Ain't no smilin' faces Mmm, no no Lyin' to the races Help me, come on, come on Somebody, help me now (I'll take you there) Help me, ya'all (I'll take you there) -- "I'll Take You There" by The Staple Singers
I like Bill Kristol for the sole reason that his commentary is so opposite the sentiments I hear in the mainstream. Even if it's for an ulterior motive, I like the idea that many people are writing many different ideas from many different preceptives.
Yet Obama won. That's just how much Hillary and McCain sucked :)

Cheers.

what's up with the conspirator TREADYBREADY thinking our government is capable of creating the aids virus? our government is incompetent-quit developing conspiracies and believe the more common sense obvious-incompetency-just today we saw the remarks of the 911 masterminds..and then there's an article about the pentagon trying to keep iranian intelligence from the cia post 911, because the cia was viewed as incompetent for its mistakes of 911-conspirators ignore the obvious & assign wickedness

Your right about the american Government, it is a shit, but in no way shape or form is our species anywhere near advanced enough to create the aids virus. Besides, it was first seen in a type of monkey/ape (there is evidence to back this with), the disease got transmitted throughafrican tribesmen hunting them for food.
It's an interesting thought, and I wouldn't be surprised if the bastards tried, the just lack the potential :)

hexag1 3 years ago 2
Nice of you to make a claim and kindly back it with a justification.
lanceawatt 3 years ago
Well lanceawatt, hitchens tries to dismiss the notion that the government created aids as if it were perposterous. The same U.S. that put small pox on blankets to kill native americans, and injected blacks with syphillis for over 40 years even after they had found the cure, and the U.S. campaign to sterilize puerto rican women for over 40 years. I mean it not an absurd argument. Hitchens is not a molecular biologist how the hell does he know.
TREADYBREADY 3 years ago
they didn't inject them for 40yrs that is a exageration of the fact.
it is absurd to say, because one can look at the state of viral biological understanding. Only very recently have we gained the ability to "create" anything, all we could ever do with virus' in the past is to weaponize them into highly trainsmitible aerosole's.
also "aides" was known in humans in africa prior to its reaching america.

Qualities to which Obama can only aspire.

while i admire christopher hitchens-- his independent, iconoclastic, and well constructed mind-- he's so far off base in this moment. obama's "race speech" was incredibly nuanced & genuine & beautiful. barack obama does not need to specify the statements he would denounce; he is not jeremiah wright, & doesn't need to defend himself as though he were. it's admirable that obama didn't throw wright under the bus, & chose to defend himself & the incredible complexity of race, religion, etc.

Sehara 3 years ago

bigjstokes 3 years ago
(1) What does what he looks like have to do with anything? That's strikes me as awfully superficial. (2) Perhaps he does drink too much, but again, that's a shallow and irrelevant point. (3) He doesn't seem at all confused. On the contrary, his arguments are cogent, and he was eloquent as always. (4) When was he being hateful? Can you cite an example from this interview?
ClumsyRoot 3 years ago 6
I find that a lot of folks just misunderstand what Christopher Hitchens' actually says. They see him as an antagonist to their viewpoint (and often rightly so), and so they hear every word coming out of his mouth as hateful.
This interpretation is so far from the truth. Hitchens criticisms are witty, acerbic, accurate, and insightful.
That's why they think he hates, because he rains down so much pain and devastating criticism on his targets.

Watch Galloway-Hitchens debate
Sehara 3 years ago
Many people did, and I've come to the conclusion that Galloways appearance was disgraceful.
Locateson 3 years ago
I am talking about Hitchens, not about just this interview. Look back. He suported Palestine, then changed his mind. I have feeling he is against everybody and himself. If you don't agree, that's fine, i have no intentions to change anybody's mind. But he does! And I am not shallow, rather very sensitive person who love truth and justice. Hitchens has a problem, in his mind only he is right and there is no room for others. Ever watched debate Galloway-Hitchens? He lost it BIG time.
Sehara 3 years ago
If Hitchens truly is the way you're describing him, then how could he have ever changed his mind about supporting Palestine? He may be outspoken, cocky, and at times caustic, but I think it would be hard to argue that he's insular or close-minded.
ClumsyRoot 3 years ago
Hitchens nutted all over Galloway's face, pardon my French.
Galloway didn't even ATTEMPT to debate Hitchens on any specific issue of the war, he just screamed the same sentence over and over "HITCHENS HAS BETRAYED THE LEFT AND JOINED BUSH AND THE NEOCONS!"
hexag1 3 years ago
He didn't challenge Hitch on any points except for 1:
if you'll recall, Galloway called Hitchens a liar for accusing him of praising Sadaam: "your lying, your nose is growing"
just search youtube for Galloway Sadaam and you'll see what a revolting liar he is.

And too many moral relativists are all too willing to excuse his actions.
kentamitchell 3 years ago 3
Why are you reading something i didn't say is beyond me. I told you before that i don't care about Galloway. Hitchens get's on my nerves. Not because what he say, because i don't like HIM. He can't say anything to please me. Didn't you have similar experience in your life? I admit, he is maybe inteligent and it is not his fault i don't like him. I just don't. NickandThaisy 3 years ago
You are no friend of 'truth and justice' if you hold Galloway in high regard.
memblor 3 years ago
I don't care about Galloway either. I am maybe inorant because i don't like Hitchens. Or maybe you are because you like him. But this is not the point. There is so many other intelectuals that is worth listening to. Hitchens is not one of them. He is paranoid. Anyway, i just expressed what i feel, I didn't express what i think. Scroll down and you'll see. Since when is feeling as same as thinking? Not since last time I checked world of politics.
Sehara 3 years ago
He still supports Palestine, he doesn't support Hamas. He's said over and over again that he's opposed to Israeli expansionism in Gaza and the West Bank, and he's said over and over again that he doesn't believe that a Brooklyn Jew has right to a land if a Palestinian who has been living there has to give it up for him. He's switched on socialism, political correctness etc., but he's always given good reasons for whatever he believes.
