Im a sophmore in band this year in percussion, pit to be exact. before I came here I had no idea how to play any form of percussion, and now Im playing in the district band for IMEA. band has been a life changing experience for me. I recognized a true passion and also met people that I'll never forget
they are amazing! im in the 8th grade and ive always wanted to do color gaurd (the flags, rifles and sabres) and marian catholic looks so awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm not too fond of this video actually.. It makes it seem like Marian is the only one who puts their blood sweat and tears into marching band. It makes them seem like the only ones who work, yet all the other top competitive bands do the same things. And as other people have said, they aren't necessarily poor just because they're a private school. The fact that they aren't a public school actually benefits them in a few ways. Dont mean to make it seem like what they do isn't great, cuz it is.
Also, My Marching Band Director graduated from Marian Catholic and considers Mr.Blimm to be his Mentor and hero. And the song that they're playing is called Almighty Father =D
I saw them Preform on 9/18/10 at Wheaton North Falcon Marching Band Competition. They were awesome. always in step even though it was short it was still great.
I'd say a 3rd place and 3rd place that was really a tie for 2nd proves that you've still got it on top of just the wonderful performance level you achieve! ;-)
I would not be where I today if I had not been in this amazing band. Three great men shaped me into the man I am today, my father, my grandfather, & Mr. Bimm. Discipline, Pride, Hard-work, & the Never-ending Pursuit Toward Excellence are the foundations of what it takes to be successful ANYWHERE. I have never encountered another group or system that is able to mold you so positively the way this family did. Structure and self motivation for the better of the whole. PRIDE
@TheBananaFactory4 They had a fund raising campaign around 2000. The community, alumni, & family of Marian raised the money for it. It took 30 YEARS of outstanding reputation to EARN those instruments. It was a reward for decades of "roughing" it. It is also about priorities. They sleep on floors in gyms and they travel in school buses that breakdown not coach buses. They won all 7 or 6 of their National Titles BEFORE the fundraiser. They earned the new instruments, and they are Yamaha not Bach
I first saw Marian Catholic at GN in 85 as a fellow competitor. I was in awe then and over 2 decades later am still in awe of what they accomplish year in and year out. Congrats on your 09 3rd place at GN by the way - actually numbers wise a tie for 2nd.
@kejsport I marched with a little band (83 members - which was 40% of our school) from WV called Paden City High. We competed on a regular basis with Norwin, Rocky Mount, Kiski Area, Marlington, New Philadelphia ( all finalists from that era). It was a great experience to see what hard work and dedication could produce. Our guard was our big deal - they won best guard at the eastern regional in 84 and 85 - first band to win it back to back. (our rifle line did double rifles)
I think that this video was well done. I am very proud of Marian Band and all accomplishments. I have an enormous amount of respect for Mr. Bimm. I am proud to have been at the 1st grand nationals in '84 and the 1st win in '85. I strongly disagree with Tracy's comments and I think she should state which years she was in the program.
Tracy, you really need to rethink what you really learned from the band experience. As an alum, nothing else in my life has made we work harder or learn more discipline. Of course we were different than the other kids, we would get called out by section leaders for not knowing parts, we had to endure hundreds of speeches from Mr. Bimm...but what job do you have today where that behavior doesn't exist? You have some serious sour grapes that probably doesn't serve you well in life either.
I don't know why this megalomaniac is suddenly being treated as though he is the answer to music's prayers, but there is an extremely nasty side to this guy, the program, and its after-effects. If I never saw the guy again, it's too soon. Perhaps the Trib will take the time to create a more balanced piece than this crap fluff. Shame on them! P.S. Yes, I was there during the winning years- still have the medals to prove it.
@tracyshapiro2 How cruel. I go to Marian currently, and I love the school so very much. I may not be in band, but I know tons of kids in band. Band is the most respected and godly thing in the whole damn school. You can't mess with the band kids. Though my friends have said the football team is mean, they would never do anything to the school's proudest and biggest operation.
@hamboj i dislike marion catholic only for the reason that they take everything in competition. but that is awesome that they are respected like that, i wish my school respected the band like that
And regardless of what anyone else may say about him being a positive influence on our music tastes, do understand that I'd been playing instruments for years before I got to high school and many of these years were on scholarship at a prestigious music school. All band did was make me never want to pick up an instrument.
Marching band was one big cult trip, and this guy was the Jim Jones of the marching culture. Thank good ness someone slapped away my grape juice cup.
Band was a degrading experience, to say the least. I stayed in it until luckily, my parents finally saw the light and let me out so I could leave and have a normal senior year. Kids in band were in cliques and behaved in the nastiest manner towards the other outcasts... Mr. Bimm was told by myself and others about the daily taunts and the nasty putdowns (including being called curse and swear words), and he did nothing. I had nightmare for several years after I left.
being totally degraded by squad leaders if you didn't have your music down; being forced to march for hours on end in the heat with no water break for hours; being forced to march for hours in the cold and coming in after being so cold outside my hands literally turned purple and I was sitting inside crying- oh, and with nothing but dispassionate looks from Mr. Bimm. I could go on and on.
@tracyshapiro2 WHY DON'T YOU COMPLAIN A LITTLE BIT MORE? hahahaha
Something tells me this is the same crap everyone in band experiences and probably similar to the same things anyone successful deals with. Whether it's marching in the cold, or making a stressful business decision... I think the kind of negative associations you've dwelled on with this are the same kind most anyone who does well at something and succeeds at the very highest level. So stop bitching or get the fuck out of the way!
As long as I live, I'll never forget how demoralizing being in band was under Mr. Bimm- besides being called a "band fag" by other students and being ostracized by the non-band people at Marian; being called "animals" by Mr. Bimm if we got something wrong;
@tracyshapiro2 obviously you dont konw what all the work and discipline can get you. getting alittle cold, or hot, or exhausted is worth it in the end, when you make the best friends you could ever have, do what you love, have people care for you soo much. The directors, of all people. care soo much for each and every student. Never once has mr. Bimm called someone an animal or anything! he wants us to play and act to our full potential.
What a wonderful feature! Marian Catholic is such an inspiring presence in the high school music world with a world class staff and kids that accomplish world class achievements!
