  • Prokofiev, cool. Zappa must have been proud.

  • Bill before Hulk. Great.

  • Someone's been smokin too much weed!!

  • Sluggo and danny at 2:46 look quick they go by fast

  • As I'm listening to this my brain is going "badgerbadgerbadgerbadger mushroom mushroom"

  • wow! they didnt get gonged!

  • how fuckin' high were they...?

  • Man, this band sure came a long way.

  • In my opinion it's Miriam Cutler who really makes the performance. Her facial expressions 1:46 are straight out of the Forbidden Zone! And I love when she grabs the host's hand at 2:53 So spunky!

  • No one mentions The Incredible Hulk?

  • Great to see this wonderful old treasure. I saw the Mystic Knights a couple of times back in the day with the rocket and all. Great stuff.

  • Excellent quality! Thank you so much! XD

  • ok... for everyone that thinks this is Danny Elfman you would be wrong. that is his brother who started the band. Danny joined ofter his brother left

  • I loved Oingo Boingo! I think it was 1981 or 1982 when I saw Boingo on a T.V. program. It was a Marv Griffin Halloween T.V. special. There were a few music bands that appeared on that show. The only ones I can remember were The Stray Cats, Toni Basil, Jose Cotton and of course Oingo Boingo! Boingo played Private Life and Grey Matter. Boingo was my favorite band in the 1980s. I sure miss those days!!

  • Sun Ra + Aram Khachaturian + Spike Jones X Complete Derangement Of The Senses = Oingo Boingo

  • this has got to be one of the greatest things I've ever seen in my life.

  • Wow this is exactly why YouTube rules....able to see a rarity like this, damn! Thanks very much uploader!! Oingo Boingo forever!

  • oh my god!!! i rember this show where did u find this?

  • Scary but I remember seeing this when it was broadcast in 1976...I was 11 years old and home sick from school. Wow. Pretty f**ked up sh*t. I Love It!! :)

  • looooool ... look at danny 5:21 how he walks hahahhaha

  • Humble beginings...

  • wtfork

  • What in the blue fuck?

  • Chuck was on some awesome coke!

I bet Danny is laughing now with all his MILLIONS!!!!!

  • Chuck was on some awesome coke!

  • HA! Wonderful prize of $516.92.

  • I remember seeing Oingo on a comdey show back in the early 80's or late 70's doing "California Girls" by the Beach Boys. Real strange version too...

  • I die for the pants.

  • Can you imagine this on Americas Got Talent?..people would think they was on the crystal meth.....

  • @BlogBitch they wouldnt make it cause pierce is to full of himself he thinks hes to sophisticated

  • love this!!

  • For some reason this makes me very very happy

  • @maubus That was what was so great about the Gong Show - it was like a party and

    the viewers were all invited.

  • Wonder what Elfman & Co. spent the $500 plus change on?

P.S. How cool was Shari Lewis?

  • the only thing remotely interesting about this is the chick!!!

  • Where the H-E-double hockey sticks did you FIND this?! This is cheesy TV gold!

  • Oingo Boingo were gonged multiple times during the act but nobody could hear it thanks to Godzilla's strategically timed cymbal crashes. By the time the Boingo were almost done, though, Chuck's joint had gotten passed round to the judges table and everyone was too busy watching to gong. TRUE STORY

  • Awesome!

  • Danny is in the upper right hand corner of the screen right at Chuck is introducing Shari Lewis. His brother is the guy in the "rocket", as mentioned earlier, he founded the Mystic Knights...then handed it off to Danny when he decided to go on with his film career.

  • I can't believe this, Long time Boingo fan. Also loved the Gong Show. Never realized the two came together.

My daughters now have skating routines to Danny Elfman songs (Batman, Spiderman, and Big Fish.)

Such talent! Even won the show when they were just screwing araound and having fun.

I wonder if they even had a clue how big they would become.

  • Wow, I have been a fan of Oingo Boingo fsince 1982, and I had never seen this before! Awesome! And of course, Oingo Boingo went on to be hugely successful, and Danny Elfman one of the most prolific music writers in Hollywood. And Simpsons! Must be nice to be that talented.

  • 2:39 freddie mercury?

  • Comment removed

  • Who was that guy with the moustache that introduced themselves?

  • @JDMAGGOTS Who is the gal with the squeeze box?

  • WOW!!!!

  • Danny joined later

  • just to let all you know that is not Danny Elfman... it's his brother, his brother is the one that started the band

  • @big69Evil From wikipedia.

As Richard Elfman's interest shifted to filmmaking, he passed leadership of the band to younger brother Danny Elfman, who had recently returned from spending time in Africa playing violin and studying percussion instruments. They gained a following in Los Angeles, and appeared as contestants on The Gong Show in 1976, winning the episode they appeared on with 24 points out of a possible 30 (and without getting gonged).

  • @big69Evil

Hey brother, Richard is in the rocket. Danny is on trombone and Richards wife is on the accordian

  • I wouldve given them the win for the hot chick alone, man oh man was she sex on a plate

  • AMERICA'S GOT TALENT 70'S STYLE

  • How do you split $516.32 among all those people??

  • Would anyone have Michael Winslow's appearance on The Gong Show?

  • And they said drugs were less potent back then

  • Danny Elfman was in Oingo Boingo.

  • He was always stoned.

  • @seasa42

he had you fooled, and the rest of the country too. that was an act.

  • Was weird Al Yankovic in Oingo Boingo too?

  • gold bit of footage - thanks for uploading

  • Danny Elfman...... genius in our time.

  • great stuff!, thanks

  • This is the other Chuck!

  • Didn't Oingo Boingo do the theme for the movie Weird Science?

  • @bluebear1985 look up Danny Elfman on Wikipedia.

  • @bluebear1985 Yep.

  • @jahl421 Forbidden Zone was actually made in '82.

  • Props to Bill Bixby for being waaaay ahead of everyone on these folks. You are missed Bill, very, very, very much. Happy New Year everyone!

  • So I literally know nothing about Oingo Boingo. Is this their first ever public appearance? It was indeed very entertaining.

  • ironically enough, Danny Elfman and Buddy Hackett would work together again, this time as Elfman becomes the big movie composer for the movie Scrooged, which Hackett appeared in

  • @ShootStyleZombie That's not really irony. Just sayin'.

  • WOW! What a gem to see! Thank you for sharing this! I attended Narbonne as well back in 1989.

  • The panel are all dead today

  • wat kind of band name is ongio boingo

  • @DomoRules1 A cool one.

  • haha,I was honestly expecting something like this from danny, and his brother looks so much like him! thank you very much for putting this up! Wish i was around when boingo was still together, i would have loved thier concerts!

  • Let's see.... a TV show with an emcee that features diverse talent, 3 judges who give their opinions and rate the acts, and a winner is declared at the end of the show. Wow, American Idol totally ripped off Chuck Barris !

  • What is this, I dont even...

  • Accordion Chick is HOT.

  • @orchidtender Indaed! Rawr!

  • Which one was Danny Elfman?

  • @bigpopparamma

He's the guy in the Rocket Playing the Kazoo

  • @CynicalSavior

I'm pretty sure that's actually Danny's older brother. I think Danny is the one behind him during the scores.

  • @CynicalSavior Not. that's Danny's bro Richard. see Forbidden Zone.

  • Danny is actually the trombone player. His brother Richard is the guy in the rocket.

  • @bigpopparamma Danny is the little guy playing the trombone. His brother is wearing the rocket.

  • Nice legs

  • Buddy Hackett's toupee is FABULOUS!

  • I get green like Bill Bixby.

  • This was great to watch! Thanks for uploading!

I too love to blast Oingo Boingo. It is funny that all the kids today love Elfman's work in the movie scores.

  • Can't gong that. If you're from Philly...is it mummers-esque?

  • This is possibly the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.

  • I don't know what the hell I just saw...but I liked it.

  • Should of Been THREE 10's !!!!!!! didn't know buddy could be such a hater :p

  • 5:58 - Danny Elfman front row second from the right.

  • @MmeLEnfer Whoa! You're right. That is soooo weird.

  • @bww78 I guess so... but it is his band lol

  • @MmeLEnfer It wasn't at the time, it was his brothers. It's just weird to see him looking so young!

  • @bww78 Yeah I know but by "his band" I meant he was in it.

  • How stoned is Chuck Barris?

  • @StuMcKoo As stoned as he needs to be to host the Gong Show.

  • @StuMcKoo In the 70s "stoned" was a relative term : )

  • @StuMcKoo Off the charts stoned!!!!!!!!

  • @StuMcKoo - That's exactly what I thought during his opening monologue. I turned to my wife and said "wow, he was stoned as hell here." :-P

  • @StuMcKoo don't think he was ever sober!!

  • I used to have a crush on Bill Bixby!

  • I could not stop laughing hysterically.

  • that host is terrible

  • @theduder27 That was Chuckie Baby's trademark - being really unrehearsed and bad as a host!

  • the single GREATEST entrance ever

    ...on american tv

  • Saw Oingo Boingo in concert but they were never this weird.

  • This was so entertaining on so many levels to me! Oingo Boingo was hilarious! I loved Buddy Hacket in the Music Man! I watched Sherri Lewis' lamb chop show as a kid! And loved Bill Bixby in the Incredible Hulk! So it was fun going back in time!!! Thank you YouTube! :)

  • I love Oingo Boingo, but I f#cking HATED this. It has a lot to do with the 70s quiz show vibe and Buddy Hackett being 15 years past his prime.

Still an interesting document, without a doubt.

  • Awesome performance by the Oingo Boingo! So you know, the song they played here is called "Here Comes The Rocketman".

  • @dorkydorkone

Great! Now if only I could find a copy of the track that wasn't recorded live. It seems like only Dr. Demento has it, and he doesn't have it up for sale on his website.

  • The forbidden zone is a must-see if you like Danny Elfman and Oingo Boingo. Truly bizarre but brilliant.

  • OMG I haven't seen this in years! Thanks for the upload. LOL Bill Bixsby. Incredible Hulk!! LMAO!

  • is that weird al in the mix?

  • @Lazlands I thought it looked like him, but this guy is too short! Plus he would have been playing the accordian!

  • Danny Elfman is the trombone player.

  • @mjhonsun Are you sure? The guy in the rocket looks like Danny when he would have been in his early 20's

  • @TheStruedel Yeah, the guy in the rocket is Richard Elfman, Danny's older brother, who led Oingo Boingo from 1972-1976 when Danny took over. He and Danny look a lot alike. They're about 4 years apart in age.

  • They picked up where Frank Zappa and The Mothers Of Invention left off.

  • Looks like they wore parachute pants before MC Hammer made them cool... for five minutes.

  • Danny Elfman has come a long way from bizarre to film score artist. BTW, Does anyone have Cheryl Lynn's (Got to be Real) debut?

  • Danny was definitely one of the trumpet players, he was right behind the host when they won.

  • @murfdasurfer I think he was one of the trombone players.

  • Wow, Lieutenant Kije on American TV. Who woulda thought?

  • OMG!!! How kewl!!! Love it Love it Love it!!!

  • Haha danny elfman and the rocket

  • @sethkeller

From what I've been told, the guy in the rocket is not Danny, that's his brother Richard. Danny is in the background playing the trombone.

  • $516.32. Such a strange sum but from an even stranger show.

  • Is the trombone player Danny Elfman?

  • Massive forehead @5:06

  • Which one's Danny Elfman?

  • Danny Elfman's playing the trombone. The redhead in front is actually his brother Richard who founded the band.

  • Thanks for posting this, OP.

  • Does anybody remember the punk band that performed a song called "calves liver" in 76 or 77? Jaye P gonged them.

  • @kittywhiskerz It was 1979. The band was Henry Herd and the Stingers. Believe it or not, pianist DJ Lebowitz was also on that show, and he got gonged by what's-her-name from Good Times T.V. show!

  • @Qrayon Love it. Tysm! I actually recorded that performance years ago on my dad's vcr, but a part of it got cut off. =( I've got it on an old vhs cassette. Need to transfer it to digital format so I can post it. :)

  • @kittywhiskerz I'd love to see that. I hope you do get a chance to post it.

By the way, I believe the other gonger was Janet duBois.

  • @Qrayon Definitely. The bassist in the cheetah pants rocked it. Wish they hadn't been gonged. Wow, Janet DuBois. That's a name I haven't heard in awhile. :)

  • @kittywhiskerz I may have misspelled Henree. Yeah, I agree with you. Henree Herd and the Stingers were great. The show also had a lovely female dancer who fell down a lot as part of her act, and some trio dancing to "Ring my Bell" by (I think) Anita Ward. Do you still have those acts on your video? Do you have DJ Lebowitz on your video? He sang a song called "We are Crazy." He lasted about a minute before he got gonged.

  • @Qrayon They were great! I was watching that episode as a kid, and Henree's band caught me by surprise. I knew by the way they were dressed that I had to record it. The song had a great tempo, which inevitably turned me onto punk, and of course the lyrics-"oooh, calves livah, well it was once alive." Lool. Unfortunately, I ran out of tape when the camera cuts to the gal w/ the shaved black hair singing "for a buck ninety five." That was all I got. Missed DJ =(

  • im shitting laughs!!! i love goofy stuff, life is great humans are screwed up

  • How come I never new about this?! Oh, by the way, does anyone know what happened to the Oingo Boingo members? I know what happened to Danny, but what of the others?

  • They were the class of NBC

  • Buddy Hackett stole Moe Howard's hair

  • hammer pants

  • hahahahahahahahaha this is retarded and awsome.

  • And so begins Reality TV.

  • thanks for posting this besides pee-wee i can also hear some simpsons as well...or am I just crazy?

  • is that danny in the rocket - awesome video - what a band!

  • i also don't think the gong show was cancelled. i think chuck pulled it off the air.

  • one of my big regrets in life is not seeing the mystic knights of the oingo boingo when i was a kid. they used to play at the la paloma theater in san diego, an art house/cult movie theater.danny elfman's brother richard directed the wonderfully twisted forbidden zone(featuring herve villechaize(tatoo from fantasy island as the king),as well as the dogboy segments from mtv's liquid television(2 examples of live action "animation").

  • it woulda been really cool if bill bixby turn'd into the hulk & rampaged through the studio creating mayhem

  • oingo boingo! danny elfman was in oingo boingo and he was the musical composer for Pee Wee's big adventure

  • OMG I have always wanted to see this :)

Thank you so much for posting it!

I thought that was Danny in the rocket until I say the face of the trombone player. lol.

  • that chick is hot

  • If you really are a Boingo fan, you should check out a little film called The Forbidden Zone made in the late 70's. This is a great clip tho. If you watch the Fairwell video it has a few clips of the Forbidden Zone on it. The Boingo show at Irvine Meadows, then Universal, was a classic trip for me and my friends for 10yrs. Fairwell tour was unforgettable.

  • @jahl421 Right up there with "The Flying Nun". And the movie "The Nun's Story".

  • lol this sounds just like all of danny elfmans works.

  • Well, nobody gonged em!

Of course, how could you hear if they did?

  • Danny Elfman and Paul Reubens both did the Gong Show, and Phil Hartman did the promo sketch... hmmmmm

  • Ok now I know why this show got canceled when it did. No Danny Elfman singing though. Disappointment. ;(

  • What a trippy treasure...

  • it's nice to see that a fellow gaucho posted this! thanks! who are you? i went to narbonne too. i was at boingo's last show ever halloween '95 at universal.

  • This clip has restored my faith in the internet.

  • wow Prokoffiev!

  • dude, I swear. I hear moments of "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" in this...

  • @tschak909 may have something to do with the fact that Danny Elfman (part of the Mystical Knights of the Oingo Boingo) did the music to Pee-Wee

  • yup, I know.. it was said a little tongue in cheek. ;)

  • @tschak909 haha i thought so, but was just making sure.

  • @tschak909 Funny you should mention that. Who directed "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure?" Tim Burton. Who does most the music for his movies? Danny Elfman:P

  • @tschak909 Well, maybe Danny wrote the song. He wrote "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure".

  • @tschak909 No surprise. Rocketman there is Danny Elfman who did a lot of music for Tim Burton's films.
