In my opinion it's Miriam Cutler who really makes the performance. Her facial expressions 1:46 are straight out of the Forbidden Zone! And I love when she grabs the host's hand at 2:53 So spunky!
I loved Oingo Boingo! I think it was 1981 or 1982 when I saw Boingo on a T.V. program. It was a Marv Griffin Halloween T.V. special. There were a few music bands that appeared on that show. The only ones I can remember were The Stray Cats, Toni Basil, Jose Cotton and of course Oingo Boingo! Boingo played Private Life and Grey Matter. Boingo was my favorite band in the 1980s. I sure miss those days!!
Scary but I remember seeing this when it was broadcast in 1976...I was 11 years old and home sick from school. Wow. Pretty f**ked up sh*t. I Love It!! :)
Good eye. Danny is on trombone. For close-ups, see @4:05 standing above his brother on the right, and @5:56 him creepy-glaring over the host's shoulder.
Oingo Boingo were gonged multiple times during the act but nobody could hear it thanks to Godzilla's strategically timed cymbal crashes. By the time the Boingo were almost done, though, Chuck's joint had gotten passed round to the judges table and everyone was too busy watching to gong. TRUE STORY
Danny is in the upper right hand corner of the screen right at Chuck is introducing Shari Lewis. His brother is the guy in the "rocket", as mentioned earlier, he founded the Mystic Knights...then handed it off to Danny when he decided to go on with his film career.
Wow, I have been a fan of Oingo Boingo fsince 1982, and I had never seen this before! Awesome! And of course, Oingo Boingo went on to be hugely successful, and Danny Elfman one of the most prolific music writers in Hollywood. And Simpsons! Must be nice to be that talented.
As Richard Elfman's interest shifted to filmmaking, he passed leadership of the band to younger brother Danny Elfman, who had recently returned from spending time in Africa playing violin and studying percussion instruments. They gained a following in Los Angeles, and appeared as contestants on The Gong Show in 1976, winning the episode they appeared on with 24 points out of a possible 30 (and without getting gonged).
ironically enough, Danny Elfman and Buddy Hackett would work together again, this time as Elfman becomes the big movie composer for the movie Scrooged, which Hackett appeared in
haha,I was honestly expecting something like this from danny, and his brother looks so much like him! thank you very much for putting this up! Wish i was around when boingo was still together, i would have loved thier concerts!
Let's see.... a TV show with an emcee that features diverse talent, 3 judges who give their opinions and rate the acts, and a winner is declared at the end of the show. Wow, American Idol totally ripped off Chuck Barris !
even though oingo boingo isnt making music anymore, danny elfman still is! check out the anniversary music box he is releasing with tim burton, theres going to be a ton of exclusive oingo boingo content on there
This was so entertaining on so many levels to me! Oingo Boingo was hilarious! I loved Buddy Hacket in the Music Man! I watched Sherri Lewis' lamb chop show as a kid! And loved Bill Bixby in the Incredible Hulk! So it was fun going back in time!!! Thank you YouTube! :)
Great! Now if only I could find a copy of the track that wasn't recorded live. It seems like only Dr. Demento has it, and he doesn't have it up for sale on his website.
@TheStruedel Yeah, the guy in the rocket is Richard Elfman, Danny's older brother, who led Oingo Boingo from 1972-1976 when Danny took over. He and Danny look a lot alike. They're about 4 years apart in age.
@kittywhiskerz It was 1979. The band was Henry Herd and the Stingers. Believe it or not, pianist DJ Lebowitz was also on that show, and he got gonged by what's-her-name from Good Times T.V. show!

@Qrayon Definitely. The bassist in the cheetah pants rocked it. Wish they hadn't been gonged. Wow, Janet DuBois. That's a name I haven't heard in awhile. :)
@kittywhiskerz I may have misspelled Henree. Yeah, I agree with you. Henree Herd and the Stingers were great. The show also had a lovely female dancer who fell down a lot as part of her act, and some trio dancing to "Ring my Bell" by (I think) Anita Ward. Do you still have those acts on your video? Do you have DJ Lebowitz on your video? He sang a song called "We are Crazy." He lasted about a minute before he got gonged.
@Qrayon They were great! I was watching that episode as a kid, and Henree's band caught me by surprise. I knew by the way they were dressed that I had to record it. The song had a great tempo, which inevitably turned me onto punk, and of course the lyrics-"oooh, calves livah, well it was once alive." Lool. Unfortunately, I ran out of tape when the camera cuts to the gal w/ the shaved black hair singing "for a buck ninety five." That was all I got. Missed DJ =(
How come I never new about this?! Oh, by the way, does anyone know what happened to the Oingo Boingo members? I know what happened to Danny, but what of the others?
one of my big regrets in life is not seeing the mystic knights of the oingo boingo when i was a kid. they used to play at the la paloma theater in san diego, an art house/cult movie theater.danny elfman's brother richard directed the wonderfully twisted forbidden zone(featuring herve villechaize(tatoo from fantasy island as the king),as well as the dogboy segments from mtv's liquid television(2 examples of live action "animation").
