  • Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson is an arrogant douche... gets what he deserves. I wish he could debate Friedman again.

  • @nicazzo That really makes you sound like a man that can judge others. You got no idea what you are talking about and before you speak your ignorant mind and call this man a arrogant douche you should come with point of where he is wrong in his speech. Everything he says is 100% accurate and you speaking like this make you sound retarded.

  • fuck you if i saw that reporter here in iceland i would fucking castrate him what the fuck are u idiots talking about. i should fucking murder every brititsh i see if u are all this stupid as these guys talking in this video

  • 6:18 "I know in Britain you don´t really have any experience of trusting the people with a referendum" Sadly how true Mr. President! Paxman, þú varst frábær með Michael Howard, en nú forstu aðeins of langt.

  • Jeeze what an intolerable and obnoxious man this guy Paxman is!!! Learn to communicate properly mister Paxman!! He doesn't even know what the hell he's talking about that arrogant prick!

  • I do not claim to know every thing about icesave but what i do know is that the people of Iceland had nothing to do with the british and the dutch money. It were 10-15 rich icelandic people. If Iceland does not pay the british and the dutch they wont have a little pocket money but if Iceland pay's the nation will be no more. We won't be able to build hospitals, schools, defence sistem and so on, the british and the dutch can well survive without this money, WE CAN'T.

  • @AlexDisel92 ??? hqhahahha

  • This video makes me depressed.

  • wow ! ....... notice that the news report conveniently neglects to say that ICELAND was the target of premeditated BANKING FRAUD ! ..... WALL ST. (i.e., GOLDMAN SACHS) is to blame for ICELAND'S problems, not the people of ICELAND ! JAIL THE CORRUPT POLITICIANS THAT SIGNED OVER ICELANDS TAXPAYERS !

  • To paraphrase what this idiot is saying: "We have huge debts because of mismanagement, stupidity and greed and we cant pay them back, this is why we have the people vote all the debt away and to hell with the creditors" What a hyporcrite the Icelander and what hypocrits the people of Iceland are. I have not seen them demonstrating as long as they have massively profited from the bad business of their financial institutions and when their gdp/capita was 20% higher than Germanys. Shameless,

  • @Yous111111 I think you should look at both sides objectively before you post statements like this on a public forum. I would have respected what you just said if you had not begun to call me and my family and friends hypocrits. We are talking about massive amounts of money that noone of us (icelandic people) saw a penny of. It was all owned by billionaires living it up in the big world. And when things get sour, we pay the bill? Tell me how that makes me a hypocrite for thinking that is wrong

  • @Yous111111 Tell me... what is wrong about people saying NO to a debt they did not earn nor had ANYTHING to say about being created and now tell me what is right about normal people paying for the debts of a privet company. I don´t think you understand what is at stake here, not just for the very poor people of Iceland but for how the monetary system works on this planet.

  • That Paxman...cunt. Must admit, him consistently interrupting the president while talking irritated me a bunch.

  • Olafur Ragnar Grimsson making things clear

  • Paxman's strident tone is a tad irritating! Glad he got shafted for once,

  • Right now there is british private company called BP causing pollution in Amercia. Say for example BP goes bust, all the owners take out their money, move to Miami and live like kings. UK taxpayers are left with a bill of approx 20-25000 pounds becouse of the actions of a private company. There are two things all the Icelandic bankers have in common, they have Icelandic passports and they live in London. So the money is london FACT

  • shut up you idiot!!!

  • Iceland has no legal responsibility to pay any of this money according to EU law. That is why the British were so adament that this not go to a court of law.

Here are some informative videos that explain the situation.

    watch?v=eRQSEg5K1qk

    watch?v=QGlPpuKGMr8&feature=related

  • Why is the president even speaking to this idiot I wonder....

  • Feel more sorry for people of Iceland.

  • Thanks to all the British commenters who said that Paxman is wrong. I am really worried it is bad enough we bailed out the banksters god bless iceland for telling them where to go/ God damn the banksters - funny but the icesave bank crook is currently in the UK with a billion of his ill gotten gains - take it off him, he owes it the icelandic people do not!!!!!!!!!

  • Trains2007 shoudnt been taken serious what so ever. Probably a dane or a brit with knowledge of the Faroese language.

Greenland is under danish rule their living standard is under the british and under the icelandic living standard today.

While Faroese have a living standard that is 3.rd best in the north, only Norway and Denmark has better living standard.

So That is a no brainer!!

  • I'm English and I know the Icelandic President is right :) The interviewer isn't representative of the average Englishman! :O I find his actions disgusting and unprofessional. The real situation is that a person (maybe from the UK) bled the money from Iceland's banks by redirecting their shares to the UK. This caused the collapse, devaluing Iceland's currency. We then demanded 4x the GDP for your unavoidable non-payment of the signed declaration. I think they want your renewable energy sources..

  • @Trains2007 Under Danish rule Iceland was the poorest country in Europe for centuries. After it kicked Denmark out it took just a few decades for Iceland to become one of the richest. In 1990 it was second on the UN human development index. No no the Danish did a terrible job of governing Iceland! Please refrain from being so stupid.

  • Comment removed

  • "One of the richest? Based on what? Hot spirngs? Lava? You live on a desolate rock. Iceland is the poorest country in Europe."

Greenland is poorer. Denmark should have taken care of Greenland..

Why is faroe islands much richer than Greenland?

Greenland receives much much more of aid than Faroe Islands does!

Iceland is not poor, it's very rich on clean energy. Somethign that industry badly needs. Something that will strengthen the icelandic ecconomy.

  • We are also better off without dansih involvment.

  • "Don't trust an Icelander." Ha. That's right assholes, don't trust me.

  • People think this about England, Iceland and the Netherlands. It has nothing to do with these countries. It has everything to do with Super Giant Size banking playing games that are designed to hamstring everybody and reap in a treasure trove of deeds, assets gold and modern slavery.

  • The Prime minester is not allowed to talk like this. She is stating things that we will do this and that and she can't promise it. SHE IS GOING AGAINS THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE.

  • you and your countrymen enjoyed the benefits, big cars and large mortgages you can no longer afford i gather. definition of debt. money borrowed, to be paid back ! or , are you the only people in the world to be exempt from this simple, basic rule of finance.. i thought not..

  • We dansed around Mammon, thats true. Who wouldn´t, given the chance?

But you keep talking about some "borrowed money"

Explain that, whom dit we borrow money from ?

  • @strawberrysubmarine. good answer mate. problem is, these icelanders seem a bit thick. they think they can spend other peoples money with impunity and not pay it back.. how childish is that ?

  • Typical comment from somone who knows nothing about the whole matter.

Talking about thick, even plain dumb.

Dont you get it yet ?

I´ll write this slowly so you just might get it . .

The money is in UK, not in Iceland.

We cant give back something we never had.

So send us the money so we can send it back.

  • Jeremy is a fuckin jerk though.

Ask Jeremy, how should we get our lifes back?

  • Why should we have to pay this. What did I do to deserve to pay these debts?

Before the crisis I hardly knew this Icesave existed!

And that man is simply really rude to our president. Can´t believe why he got that job.

  • its not bad journalism that has caused this financial mess for iceland. it is bad management, bad government and delaying the inevitable pay back for all the consumerism built on debt. the party is over.. its hangover time...

  • And the problem will get worser when most of the european laws will be written in brussel. Then it is the end.

  • A lot of people from europe is at the side of island. Note that england is not more than the europe hand of wall street where all the bullshit was originated. The problem is that in most of europe there is not a real democracy.

  • (The first part of my comment is below). The UK can't simple act like a spoiled child simply because another countries law's are different from its own. The Icelandic president has the legal right according to our constitution to divert a law to a referendum if he/she so chooses. The European population, and all who take interrest in the Icesave dispute, should know if they don't already that the UK used a terrorist act against Iceland and we are one of the original NATO Nations!!

  • What the people of Europe must understand is that the quality of journalism surrounding this issue is the same as the credit rating Iceland has at the moment. A law regarding Icesave was passed in August where it is clearly stated that Iceland will honor its commitment, even if we should or not, and that the only thing needed for our financial minister to get the power to pay the dept is for the parlement to agree on a few conditions. Those conditions where diverted to a referendum

  • There's a price to pay for freedom. Capitalism is the best we've got. But capitalism is nothing without prudence.

  • Wake up Iceland.... The Zeitgeist Movement

  • Watching this only makes me feel sorry for the people of UK. How terrible to live under incompetent journalism like that....

  • Allar alhæfingar eru slæmar. :)

  • To Icelanders thinking that Paxman was rude, didn't show enough respect, was ignorant, etc... Note that's the way Paxman conducts his interviews with ALL politicians! His style is famous...

  • It's not his style, his style is ok. It's his lack of getting the facts right, which is quite horrendous for a reputable news station like the BBC.

  • @strawberrysubmarine So basicly he's just a rude, disrespectful, ignorant asshole to everybody. That just helps prove our point even more.

  • And even Mc Donalds have shut up shop´s there.. LOL. How important...

But basically It doesn´t matter what we vote. We are going to pay anyway ???

  • People from iceland rescue yourself. Don´t pay and also stay away from the european community and the planned surveillance society! It was a manipulation. They want get frour freedom! And do not worry about the money. It did never exists! God bless u all!

  • danke schön !! : ) god bless

  • if this bill is passed I am sure to move away from here. The bank with the icesave plan is a privite and a subsidiary to another bank which was supposedly back up by the country/parlament and agreed by only one man. The fact is if we would take this case to international court they would favor us 60 to 40 in this case. We do not have to take it to extreme lengths and decline any payments to the brittish government as we are honorable people, we do not want to pay that high percentage on the loan

  • .That the country /imf is providing us with to pay of the brittish/dutch. We gave a good deal to both sides that we could have payed off every penny. But their government declined and wanted more. I guess there is only one word for it, greed?

  • The people who own these private banks should pay its their private biz. I never heard of a bank called icesave until october 2007.

  • "the man who might cost us all bilions of pounds...', it's the retarded anglo saxan-american financial system that caused all this mess in the first place!

  • very bad and disrespectful interviewer! SHAME! He was speaking with a head of State and constantly interrupting! President Grimsson won this battle in my opinion.

  • right on

  • They did it so they could put the debt onto us :P

  • satt

  • He makes it seem soo vital for Britain if Iceland pays...

Well.. it's 20.000 pounds each Icelander or 50 pounds each British person....

  • Max Keiser would slam (vocally of course) this interviewer.

  • Why should the Icelandic public pay the debts of some private venture capilaists???

  • I see that most of the facts have already been mentioned here so I would just like to comment on the very very bad journalism. I mean in this 9 min clip everything was torn out of content by both journalists. I am all for though journalism towards people who refuse to admit they are wrong but the fact is Ólafur did not do anything wrong. Over 60.000 people in Iceland did challenge him to use his right to send this to a public vote. Thats about 26 % of the nations people old enough to vote.

  • Isn`t it wonderful how patriotism takes over from sense!

  • Well, this "stupid Icelandic pride" has kicked british ass several times - and is still kicking . .

  • President Grímsson did a good job holding his ground. People must remember how large this price tag is for our country. Putting it to referendum is hardly without precedent, and we have the right. That said, it is important for us to show that we keep our word. I believe we will repay our debt, but it is important that the terms are fair.

  • "some president somewhere" það er í lögum að forsetinn hefur neitunarvald og hann var að beita því!!!...ekki líta niður á forsetan með neitunarvaldið..það er eins og enginn fatti þetta

  • Actually a very good interview for the Icelandic president.

He is the light in the dark.

    He is my president.

  • there you can see.. in most of these comments to the video there are british that stand up whith iceland !!! but the British Coverment just wants the money back!!! and where will that money go? Britain has enogh money to pay all the problems but still... i think if iceland woult give them the money back, the british coverment woult use it in the modern war in middle-east and use there old money for the people... sorry 4 the spelling

  • You're right, and I'm thankful for that. We don't have much hatred towards the British people... We know it's not them forcing this on us.

It's more the British government we really hate with passion...

  • I'm a bit surprised by Paxman's apparent bigotry towards an entire nation - if he put some effort into his research he'd likely find that most of the people that made any money from this debacle actually live in England and will probably never be seen in Iceland again. The Icelandic nation as such will have to pick up the tab for a handful of modern day robber barons who couldn't care less about what nationality is on their passport.

  • Comment removed

  • In defence of Paxman: he is in fact extremely sharp, well educated and (generally) well informed - so the bias apparent in the introduction too me by surprise.

In fact Paxman is exactly the sort of interviewer I would like to see on Icelandic TV, because he doesn't treat his subjects with the sort of reverence as do Icelandic journalists.

That being said, the man is also an arrogant prick.

  • Comment removed

  • Have you been to the Britsh Museum?.

If you have you will know who are the biggest thiefs!!!...

Everything there is stolen from other countries!!.. Dont pay them ! ! !

  • I think that Americans talk about the progress of a Sherman tank as a simile for people being thrashed, as for example in a debate. Mr. Paxman's stardom lost some of its luster in this delightful encounter with a person who refuses to play the role of the underdog. Right on, Mr President!

  • Ólafur is my president <3 he's the best president ever ! he totally stood up for his country and faced that Jeremy guy ! Jeremy would not let Ólafur finish his sentence ! Jeremy is so rude !

  • I am British and Consider the behavior of both the British and Dutch governments to Iceland in the past months to be unfair and ridiculous. I really didn't like the attitude from Paxman to Grímsson and admired the way he brought his case across. Not all of us Brits agree with The goverments policy against Iceland.

  • UK passed terrorist law against us.

    That equals declaration of war.

This caused huge financial damage to us.

Therefore we are intitled to war composition wich will be much higher then the Icesave account in total.

UK will end up paying us !

  • This is my president!!!! He is protectin his nation aginst stupid goverment

  • Well put Ólafur!

  • The piece and the interview was a bit of a hatchet job with some bad representation of the facts, barely acknowledging the standing agreement that Iceland will indeed pay back... admittedly noone really knows how or when.

Paxman is a love/hate figure for sure, I just wish that RÚV (or Stöð 2) had someone to compare to him back in the "Good Old Days" to directly question what the hell was going on in the champagne soaked FL sponsored XD non-stop party. Maybe mistakes could have been prevented?

  • I find it interesting that at 6:40 Mr. Paxman refers to Mr. Grimsson as "some president somewhere". As fate may have it; Mr. Grimsson is actually not just some president somewhere but the president of Iceland, in Iceland.

Mr. Grimsson does well in this interview and i really like his comments about the new Europe and its values in the future.

  • God bless our president!

    Guð blessi Ólaf Ragnar Grímsson!!

  • he dosen't REFUSE to pay, he's just letting the people of the country choose in elections.

  • Olafur did well, in this interview and by his decision.

  • Like so many of my fellow Icelanders I´m glad that the public of the UK gets to hear our voice for a change to set some of the misunderstandings straight.

We don´t have any of your money and like paying for someone else´s speeding ticket I have to say that the circumstances here are much alike.

I have decided to vote in favor of this law to pay Icesave back but If the interest rates are looked at then we are paying much higher rates than would be considered normal.

  • Britain refused to bail out privat banks in the Isl of Man.

Then why should we have to bail out privat banks in Britain ?

    What is the difference ?

  • Comment removed

  • And Paxman! The answer to u'r simple question is simple also! Yes!! we will pay! But we will only pay what we are responsible for!

  • Iceland's obligations are limited to approx. 20 000€ deposit guarantee. Since the British and Dutch governments decided to guarantee all IceSave deposits in full, everything above 20K € is their responsibility - not the responsibility of Icelanders.

  • and there were 320.000 depositers in Icesave...

    Iceland's population is about 318.000.

This is so fucking unfair :(

  • I agree with Bratant. And this reporter should acknowledge that he is talking to a president not a criminal and he is that honorable to let his nation talk, giving the experience with Brown, i wouldnt think he would ever give his nation a say in a matter like this if britain was in the same situation as us. And the media in england should be ashamed of them selfs for taking everything out of it right context and makeing us look like we are not an honorable nation! And the public took no part!

  • To call this bad reporting would be a massive understatement. Paxman has a reputation for being arrogant and condescending, so be it, but the amount of nonsense in this story has completely undermined the BBC as a whole. There is hardly a true statement in the whole story. Iceland has since day one acknowledge it's responsibility to pay back the Icesave debt. The legislation being referred to in this "report" is not weather to pay or not. It is about changes to the contract between the countries

  • Comment removed

  • Even the first word of the story is wrong and full of rudness. He calls the president Olifur. His name is Olafur. Junk journalism. I doupt that he would like to be called Poxman.

  • ólafur Góður.

  • Maybe the icelandic president should work as an reporter at BBC to put the journalism on a higher level ;).

Usually i like the BBC but this intewiew yesterday..... well....

  • This is one of the worst news covers I have seen. All wrong and full of prejudice. Looks like the reporter lost some money, like all others, and is unable to report objectively. It is unneccesary to be so rude.

    Shame on you BBC.

  • How rude and ingorant can you be ???

There is almost nothing true that this so called jurnalist says in those 9 minutes. Did he not bother to check out anything he was stating?

Such incompetence usually gets people fired !

But then again I have heard many ignorant statements from the British regarding Icesave.

They should listen to what the Dutch have to say, most of them got their facts right.

I sure hope that the rest of the British people´s IQs are greater than their shoe size !

  • WOW I am shocked by the poor journalism on this piece!!! Everything about it was incorrect...I don´t think that they got one thing right in that whole thing...and that guy was so rude...show some respect when you are talking to a country leader!!!

  • FUCK..

we, the icelandic people should not have to pay..

those fuckers who started the icesafe bullshit should pay !!

  • Borga ekki peningar. En að vera sanngjarn, gefa þeim val, 1 eða 2 fingur.

    Hope I said that right

  • Iceland has been severely weakened by the world financial crises, even more so because of it´s small population.

Brown and Darling are like the big fat bully in the kindergarten bullying a weak limping child just to turn the focus away from their own weakness and mistakes

  • This is a very bad journalism they got it all wrong.

They realy should have done more research but, Ólafur did a good job to corect the error.

    take care

  • Please send your so called journalists back to school and let them at least learn the basics of journalism.

Then let them at least learn the basics of what is going on in Iceland befor sending them over here babbling their ignorance.

The only trouth spoken her was by the president.

Rest was wrong facts combined with badly biased journalism that would get you fired for lousy work ethics in the the smallest of radio station in Iceland.

  • What a hackjob. This is the most biased news I've ever seen. Icelandic people have no obligation to back up a private institution, and it's even against Iceland's constitution to do so (for the state to guarantee a private debt). And it wasn't private pensioners they owe, it's small british towns who like dumbasses put their town's pension funds in these high risk high interest bank accounts.

  • A factual error: the Icelandic banks were not Icelandic banks. They had been privatized in 2002, and belonged to investors of many nationalities. They are the people responsible for the bank's payment, not the innocent public, of neither Iceland or any other country.

  • The Icelandic banks were regulated by the Icelandic regulator. That's why they're called Icelandic banks. It's not that difficult to understand...

  • Wrong! The British and Dutch brances were supposed to be regulated by these goverments.

They should have made sure that these brances had enaugh founds to secure deposits.

  • Icesave was a branch (not subsidiary) of Landsbanki so, under EU law, was regulated by Icelandic authorities. If it were a subsidiary, then it would have been regulated the the UK authorities. Note that, throughout 2008, the UK repeatedly asked for Icesave to be converted into a subsidiary and so fall under UK regulation, but both Landsbanki and the Icelandic Central Bank refused.

  • Whoever was suppoed to regulate Landsbanki doesn´t concern me.

This is under dispute between Icelandic and British/Dutch authorities.

EU regulations seem not to be clear on that.

However what the public is unhappy with is, we dont want to pay for privat companies, banks or other.

That should be the respnsibility of the shareholders, not the Icelandic public.

  • If Icelanders didn't want to pay for banks' obligations, then they should have stopped their banks from taking deposits. At least the world now knows never to deposit money in Icelandic financial institutions ever again - because the country won't honour its minimum legal obligations. No wonder Iceland's credit rating is officially junk rating.

  • Ah, you mean Fitch ratings. Isn´t that the same Fitch who gave Landsbanki A+ just before the collapse ?

Somone should rate Fitch´s ratings down to junk.

But we want the british to have the money. Please feel free to collect it. It,s all in UK anyway and so are the crooked bankers. Most of them are living in London now.

Just go knock on their doors and collect.
