I do not claim to know every thing about icesave but what i do know is that the people of Iceland had nothing to do with the british and the dutch money. It were 10-15 rich icelandic people. If Iceland does not pay the british and the dutch they wont have a little pocket money but if Iceland pay's the nation will be no more. We won't be able to build hospitals, schools, defence sistem and so on, the british and the dutch can well survive without this money, WE CAN'T.

To paraphrase what this idiot is saying: "We have huge debts because of mismanagement, stupidity and greed and we cant pay them back, this is why we have the people vote all the debt away and to hell with the creditors" What a hyporcrite the Icelander and what hypocrits the people of Iceland are. I have not seen them demonstrating as long as they have massively profited from the bad business of their financial institutions and when their gdp/capita was 20% higher than Germanys. Shameless,
@Yous111111 I think you should look at both sides objectively before you post statements like this on a public forum. I would have respected what you just said if you had not begun to call me and my family and friends hypocrits. We are talking about massive amounts of money that noone of us (icelandic people) saw a penny of. It was all owned by billionaires living it up in the big world. And when things get sour, we pay the bill? Tell me how that makes me a hypocrite for thinking that is wrong
@Yous111111 Tell me... what is wrong about people saying NO to a debt they did not earn nor had ANYTHING to say about being created and now tell me what is right about normal people paying for the debts of a privet company. I don´t think you understand what is at stake here, not just for the very poor people of Iceland but for how the monetary system works on this planet.
"There is no sovereign guarantee on the depositor's scheme according to the EU directive says Alain Lipietz who chaired the Finance Committee of the Parliament of Europe which wrote the directive. Right now there is british private company called BP causing pollution in Amercia. Say for example BP goes bust, all the owners take out their money, move to Miami and live like kings. UK taxpayers are left with a bill of approx 20-25000 pounds becouse of the actions of a private company. There are two things all the Icelandic bankers have in common, they have Icelandic passports and they live in London. So the money is london FACT
Iceland has no legal responsibility to pay any of this money according to EU law. That is why the British were so adament that this not go to a court of law.

I did not vote for the parties in minority to do it,not individual members of the parliament and for sure not the president(never have and never will). This contract must go through and we will pay our debts!!!!

I'm 25 years old and Icelandic and I want to say something to the British and Dutch nations. I'm terrible sorry and angry for we have such a fool as a president. He has done not much more than being a cheerleader for the so called business vikings. We had election last May where we among other things voted for how we would handle Ice-Save and taxes and such. Now the parties in minority want to rule Ice-Save conclusion and even some members of the parliament want the nation to vote for taxes
People from iceland rescue yourself. Don´t pay and also stay away from the european community and the planned surveillance society! It was a manipulation. They want get frour freedom! And do not worry about the money. It did never exists! God bless u all!
if this bill is passed I am sure to move away from here. The bank with the icesave plan is a privite and a subsidiary to another bank which was supposedly back up by the country/parlament and agreed by only one man. The fact is if we would take this case to international court they would favor us 60 to 40 in this case. We do not have to take it to extreme lengths and decline any payments to the brittish government as we are honorable people, we do not want to pay that high percentage on the loan
.That the country /imf is providing us with to pay of the brittish/dutch. We gave a good deal to both sides that we could have payed off every penny. But their government declined and wanted more. I guess there is only one word for it, greed?
"the man who might cost us all bilions of pounds...', it's the retarded anglo saxan-american financial system that caused all this mess in the first place!
very bad and disrespectful interviewer! SHAME! He was speaking with a head of State and constantly interrupting! President Grimsson won this battle in my opinion.
I see that most of the facts have already been mentioned here so I would just like to comment on the very very bad journalism. I mean in this 9 min clip everything was torn out of content by both journalists. I am all for though journalism towards people who refuse to admit they are wrong but the fact is Ólafur did not do anything wrong. Over 60.000 people in Iceland did challenge him to use his right to send this to a public vote. Thats about 26 % of the nations people old enough to vote.
President Grímsson did a good job holding his ground. People must remember how large this price tag is for our country. Putting it to referendum is hardly without precedent, and we have the right. That said, it is important for us to show that we keep our word. I believe we will repay our debt, but it is important that the terms are fair.
"some president somewhere" það er í lögum að forsetinn hefur neitunarvald og hann var að beita því!!!...ekki líta niður á forsetan með neitunarvaldið..það er eins og enginn fatti þetta
there you can see.. in most of these comments to the video there are british that stand up whith iceland !!! but the British Coverment just wants the money back!!! and where will that money go? Britain has enogh money to pay all the problems but still... i think if iceland woult give them the money back, the british coverment woult use it in the modern war in middle-east and use there old money for the people... sorry 4 the spelling
I'm a bit surprised by Paxman's apparent bigotry towards an entire nation - if he put some effort into his research he'd likely find that most of the people that made any money from this debacle actually live in England and will probably never be seen in Iceland again. The Icelandic nation as such will have to pick up the tab for a handful of modern day robber barons who couldn't care less about what nationality is on their passport.
In defence of Paxman: he is in fact extremely sharp, well educated and (generally) well informed - so the bias apparent in the introduction too me by surprise.
In fact Paxman is exactly the sort of interviewer I would like to see on Icelandic TV, because he doesn't treat his subjects with the sort of reverence as do Icelandic journalists.
That being said, the man is also an arrogant prick.
I think that Americans talk about the progress of a Sherman tank as a simile for people being thrashed, as for example in a debate. Mr. Paxman's stardom lost some of its luster in this delightful encounter with a person who refuses to play the role of the underdog. Right on, Mr President!
Ólafur is my president <3 he's the best president ever ! he totally stood up for his country and faced that Jeremy guy ! Jeremy would not let Ólafur finish his sentence ! Jeremy is so rude !
I am British and Consider the behavior of both the British and Dutch governments to Iceland in the past months to be unfair and ridiculous. I really didn't like the attitude from Paxman to Grímsson and admired the way he brought his case across. Not all of us Brits agree with The goverments policy against Iceland.
The piece and the interview was a bit of a hatchet job with some bad representation of the facts, barely acknowledging the standing agreement that Iceland will indeed pay back... admittedly noone really knows how or when.
Paxman is a love/hate figure for sure, I just wish that RÚV (or Stöð 2) had someone to compare to him back in the "Good Old Days" to directly question what the hell was going on in the champagne soaked FL sponsored XD non-stop party. Maybe mistakes could have been prevented?
I find it interesting that at 6:40 Mr. Paxman refers to Mr. Grimsson as "some president somewhere". As fate may have it; Mr. Grimsson is actually not just some president somewhere but the president of Iceland, in Iceland.
Mr. Grimsson does well in this interview and i really like his comments about the new Europe and its values in the future.
Það er ekki verið að fara að kjósa um það hvort við borgum. Og þar sem mér finnst fólk sem tjáir sig opinberlega um málefni sem það veit lítið eða ekkert um heimskt, þá finnst mér þú heimskur.
Like so many of my fellow Icelanders I´m glad that the public of the UK gets to hear our voice for a change to set some of the misunderstandings straight.
We don´t have any of your money and like paying for someone else´s speeding ticket I have to say that the circumstances here are much alike.
I have decided to vote in favor of this law to pay Icesave back but If the interest rates are looked at then we are paying much higher rates than would be considered normal.
Iceland's obligations are limited to approx. 20 000€ deposit guarantee. Since the British and Dutch governments decided to guarantee all IceSave deposits in full, everything above 20K € is their responsibility - not the responsibility of Icelanders.
I agree with Bratant. And this reporter should acknowledge that he is talking to a president not a criminal and he is that honorable to let his nation talk, giving the experience with Brown, i wouldnt think he would ever give his nation a say in a matter like this if britain was in the same situation as us. And the media in england should be ashamed of them selfs for taking everything out of it right context and makeing us look like we are not an honorable nation! And the public took no part!
To call this bad reporting would be a massive understatement. Paxman has a reputation for being arrogant and condescending, so be it, but the amount of nonsense in this story has completely undermined the BBC as a whole. There is hardly a true statement in the whole story. Iceland has since day one acknowledge it's responsibility to pay back the Icesave debt. The legislation being referred to in this "report" is not weather to pay or not. It is about changes to the contract between the countries
Even the first word of the story is wrong and full of rudness. He calls the president Olifur. His name is Olafur. Junk journalism. I doupt that he would like to be called Poxman.
This is one of the worst news covers I have seen. All wrong and full of prejudice. Looks like the reporter lost some money, like all others, and is unable to report objectively. It is unneccesary to be so rude.
WOW I am shocked by the poor journalism on this piece!!! Everything about it was incorrect...I don´t think that they got one thing right in that whole thing...and that guy was so rude...show some respect when you are talking to a country leader!!!
Iceland has been severely weakened by the world financial crises, even more so because of it´s small population.
Brown and Darling are like the big fat bully in the kindergarten bullying a weak limping child just to turn the focus away from their own weakness and mistakes
Please send your so called journalists back to school and let them at least learn the basics of journalism.
Then let them at least learn the basics of what is going on in Iceland befor sending them over here babbling their ignorance.
The only trouth spoken her was by the president.
Rest was wrong facts combined with badly biased journalism that would get you fired for lousy work ethics in the the smallest of radio station in Iceland.
What a hackjob. This is the most biased news I've ever seen. Icelandic people have no obligation to back up a private institution, and it's even against Iceland's constitution to do so (for the state to guarantee a private debt). And it wasn't private pensioners they owe, it's small british towns who like dumbasses put their town's pension funds in these high risk high interest bank accounts.
A factual error: the Icelandic banks were not Icelandic banks. They had been privatized in 2002, and belonged to investors of many nationalities. They are the people responsible for the bank's payment, not the innocent public, of neither Iceland or any other country.
Icesave was a branch (not subsidiary) of Landsbanki so, under EU law, was regulated by Icelandic authorities. If it were a subsidiary, then it would have been regulated the the UK authorities. Note that, throughout 2008, the UK repeatedly asked for Icesave to be converted into a subsidiary and so fall under UK regulation, but both Landsbanki and the Icelandic Central Bank refused.
If Icelanders didn't want to pay for banks' obligations, then they should have stopped their banks from taking deposits. At least the world now knows never to deposit money in Icelandic financial institutions ever again - because the country won't honour its minimum legal obligations. No wonder Iceland's credit rating is officially junk rating.
Ah, you mean Fitch ratings. Isn´t that the same Fitch who gave Landsbanki A+ just before the collapse ?
Somone should rate Fitch´s ratings down to junk.
But we want the british to have the money. Please feel free to collect it. It,s all in UK anyway and so are the crooked bankers. Most of them are living in London now.
Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson is an arrogant douche... gets what he deserves. I wish he could debate Friedman again.

Why is faroe islands much richer than Greenland?
Greenland receives much much more of aid than Faroe Islands does!

It's not his style, his style is ok. It's his lack of getting the facts right, which is quite horrendous for a reputable news station like the BBC.

And such things that can't be vote for by the public in many of our neighbour countries and are too complicated for the public to vote for.

Now the parties in minority want to rule Ice-Save conclusion and even some members of the parliament want the nation to vote for taxes

if this bill is passed I am sure to move away from here.

President Grímsson did a good job holding his ground. People must remember how large this price tag is for our country. Putting it to referendum is hardly without precedent, and we have the right. That said, it is important for us to show that we keep our word. I believe we will repay our debt, but it is important that the terms are fair.

We don´t have any of your money and like paying for someone else´s speeding ticket I have to say that the circumstances here are much alike.
I have decided to vote in favor of this law to pay Icesave back but If the interest rates are looked at then we are paying much higher rates than would be considered normal.

And the public took no part!
jakobinanna 2 years ago 4
To call this bad reporting would be a massive understatement. Paxman has a reputation for being arrogant and condescending, so be it, but the amount of nonsense in this story has completely undermined the BBC as a whole. There is hardly a true statement in the whole story. Iceland has since day one acknowledge it's responsibility to pay back the Icesave debt. The legislation being referred to in this "report" is not weather to pay or not. It is about changes to the contract between the countries

KristjanLogason 2 years ago 24
What a hackjob. This is the most biased news I've ever seen. Icelandic people have no obligation to back up a private institution, and it's even against Iceland's constitution to do so (for the state to guarantee a private debt). And it wasn't private pensioners they owe, it's small british towns who like dumbasses put their town's pension funds in these high risk high interest bank accounts.
videogamemaker 2 years ago 23
A factual error: the Icelandic banks were not Icelandic banks. They had been privatized in 2002, and belonged to investors of many nationalities. They are the people responsible for the bank's payment, not the innocent public, of neither Iceland or any other country.
HBSleeper 2 years ago 42
The Icelandic banks were regulated by the Icelandic regulator. That's why they're called Icelandic banks. It's not that difficult to understand...
strawberrysubmarine 2 years ago
Wrong! The British and Dutch brances were supposed to be regulated by these goverments.
They should have made sure that these brances had enaugh founds to secure deposits.
adalstef 2 years ago 3
Icesave was a branch (not subsidiary) of Landsbanki so, under EU law, was regulated by Icelandic authorities. If it were a subsidiary, then it would have been regulated the the UK authorities. Note that, throughout 2008, the UK repeatedly asked for Icesave to be converted into a subsidiary and so fall under UK regulation, but both Landsbanki and the Icelandic Central Bank refused.
strawberrysubmarine 2 years ago
Whoever was suppoed to regulate Landsbanki doesn´t concern me.
This is under dispute between Icelandic and British/Dutch authorities.
EU regulations seem not to be clear on that.
However what the public is unhappy with is, we dont want to pay for privat companies, banks or other.
That should be the respnsibility of the shareholders, not the Icelandic public.
adalstef 2 years ago 3
If Icelanders didn't want to pay for banks' obligations, then they should have stopped their banks from taking deposits. At least the world now knows never to deposit money in Icelandic financial institutions ever again - because the country won't honour its minimum legal obligations. No wonder Iceland's credit rating is officially junk rating.
strawberrysubmarine 2 years ago
Ah, you mean Fitch ratings. Isn´t that the same Fitch who gave Landsbanki A+ just before the collapse ?
Somone should rate Fitch´s ratings down to junk.
But we want the british to have the money. Please feel free to collect it. It,s all in UK anyway and so are the crooked bankers. Most of them are living in London now.
Just go knock on their doors and collect.
