@TheAnimeCW Very close...I think Ric (obviously) was better in the ring, but on the mike I don't know if I can say one was better than the other. Ric was great, but Rock was great as a heel and a face, and a little more versatile on the mike.
@NJPlayer79 i have to disagree with you on that homie...ric talked CASH shit especially when he was a heel...now i will say i enjoyed rock as a heel...but when he went face, (which he couldn't help but all the catch phrases it couldn't be helped anymore) that's what he kept relying on to get him over...but i'll also say he was a great in ring performer...he learned from the old school about the business...make yourself good as well as your opponents and he did that well
I heard they tried to make him a very sweet offer originally, but showed him the true meaning of "hardball" when he balked and got greedy. Bulls and Bears profit, pigs get slaughtered!
@Quntumking I agree. Flair, the Horsemen, The Russians, the American Dream Dusty Rhodes, Magnum T.A., Legion of Doom a.k.a. the Road Warriors etc.. God those were the really good days of regional wrestling. The NWA knew they had talent and they let the talent run with the show. Unlike the WWF/WWE which has had some very good years (mid to late 80s, the attitude era, perhaps a few more) but restricts all but a very superbly talented individuals until they suck the life's blood out of them.
Can someone please explain to me why in some vids he has the old NWA title and in some he has what is now the World Heavyweight Title? Did they just switch it out? or what?
@jackrobhp28 They switched it out sometime in early 1986 with the big gold belt that's still around today. The old belt had been around for about 20 years when they changed it. Gotta admit the new belt is much better than the old one.
I rather watch a promo by any wrestler in the 80's than now.Even the rock or stone cold and they are students of the game and stone cold cut his teeth in world class wrestling
Honestly, when people talk about the best wrestlers on the mic, they ought to start at 11 because NOBODY is even close to the Nature Boy. His average run-of-the-mill promo is better than almost every other wrestlers best promo. So Flair holds the 1-10 spots for me of all-time mic workers. Total brilliance. Will never be anyone like him again.
@bull864 I like that....it is so true. Flair is the best on the mic. Everyone else should start at no. 11....that made me laugh because it is so true. His worst promo is a lot better than others best promo.
I like that Flair acknowledged Brad Armstrong among his great opponents. Armstrong was one of the best ring talents ever - not to mention the best Armstrong ever - yet he gets very little recognition.
@TheLeroyMoon Brad Armstrong couldn't cut a promo/talk on the microphone. His brother, the Road Dog Jesse James, learned how to work the mic....oh You don't know. Then your ass better callll somebody!!!!. check out the entrance music for the New Age Outlaws...you damn right.
@lawmancpa Road Dog was better than Brad on the mic. I just wish he hadn't let his ring work waste away. Brad's personality & mic skills were more akin to a perennial babyface like Steamboat. I don't understand why he wasn't lead more in that direction, especially by WCW which outright humiliated him with some of the personas they gave him. I also wonder if there weren't some bookers who kept Brad down in favor of promoting their own less-sculpted, less athletic sons and relatives.
Of course JJ stated on tv over 20 years ago that Tully Blanchard Enterprises WAS actually bigger than GM. This was back in the mid-late 80's when GM was worth $500 billion or so. I never personally saw any official SEC filings on the size of Tully's company, but JJ Dillion's word is good enough for me.
@vindaisatossermini2 Of course this was back before Enron, Sarbanes Oxley, etc. I suppose it's possible JJ and Co could have been cooking the books. But I think they had too much integrity to do such a thing IMO. No doubt Flair and the Andersons were major shareholders as well. I also think I heard Gordon Gekko mention TBE on "Wallstreet" as an example of a company he would NOT dare try to shake up. @vindaisatossermini2 Yes - JJ Dillon still President and COO, Tully still Chairman and CEO, etc. Flair and the Andersons are also board members, and I heard that Dark Journey quickly moved up the ranks over the years from Tully's Admin Assistant to an executive role herself. Many funds, institutions, and individual major shareholders like Buffett and others have rode this baby to the top!
Do you remember in the extras of the Wall Street DVD, when Buddy and Gordon stormed the NWA tapings and demanded a tag team match against JJ and Tully for complete control of TBE? They backed down when JJ demanded that Ole be special referee, and Arn as the match "enforcer".
@vindaisatossermini2 Yeah, what were GG and BF thinking? I guess they had too much coke and Dom P at Club 21 that day when they flew down in GG's jet and issued the challenge. No doubt GG was pulling Bud's strings, just like with the Bluestar takeover and liquidation attempt. Those skinnyfat Wallstreet geeks should stick to their chart reading, hostile takeovers, and LBOs. I bet GG's waist = 40 inches and his arms not even 12". And Fox wasn't much better. No chance against The Horsemen!
I love the way he always talks about "The Bottom Line" as though he's the CEO of General Motors or something. I also got a good laugh on this one about how he compliments the intelligence of the dedicated wrestling fan who "lives wrestling day in and day out".
@jerzeefranky3475 No offense, but if you think Triple H is the GOAT, then you are a moron. Triple H is the most overrated wrestler in the history of the business. He used his position of friendship and marriage to advance his career. Average in ring and average on the mic. That doesn't equate to G.O.A.T. buddy.
I am convinced that if my father knew what wrestling was going to turn into today, he would have never told me it was time to go to bed when we were watching stuff like this. I also imagine he would have spent a fortune on VHS tapes to record it all.
Flair was the greatest. He lived his gimmick in real life, and did everything he talked about on tv like jet flying, limousine riding, and being dressed in the best clothes.
The most underrated part of Flair's schtick IMO was when he would drop all the names of the guys he'd wrestled over the years. Dusty RHODES!...Harley RACE!... lol
It always cracks me up when Flair goes through all big name superstar's and he throws in Brad Armstrong. I was big into this back in this period and I can tell you Brad Armstrong never amounted to jack :)
Rick is the best ever. No other way to put it! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ric Flair is the best ever and it's sad that we'll never see wrestling like it used to be.Flair and most other wrestlers back then made their on promos without someone writing every single word for them to read. That's why wrestling is a joke now and sucks!
Austin and Rock could carry promos by themselves. To say they needed each other to pull them off is goddamn stupid.
Shawn and Hunter are alright at promos. However, to get their good stuff, you'd have to look at the early stuff. E.g. HBK's promos from 1993-1995 and Hunter's stuff from 1998-2001. Especially the "I am the f***king Game!" promo.
I cant believe I arguing this but all I am saying is that there is Ric Flair and then there is a drop off...a huge one. Did you see Raw no one can cut a promo worth shiiiiit.
Don't classify Rock/Austin to today's crap. It doesn't measure. Flair is on TNA right now and making himself look like a fool. HBK & HHH aren't at the peak, but are pretty good nonetheless. I'd take Taker/HBK over Flair/Styles any time.
@freddy333ful You are on drugs. The Rock never ever needed Austin for anything: to cut a promo, get over with the crowd.....anything. Only one man is better than The Rock at cutting promos and that's Ric Flair.
@TheLuscious The Rock was a little overrated cutting promos. He was good, but nowhere near Flair, Arn, Jake Roberts, or Dusty Rhodes. Austin isn't in their league either.
@dmuse1981 Are you serious? Flair's promos were always impromptu, while the Rock's were scripted. Plus, the Rock just talked about "Jabroni Drive" and "Roody poo candy ass" type stuff. ALL of his promos were the same dickhead.
Ric Flair is *THE* best ever. Even *THE* best gets old. He may not be able to stay with the younger wrestlers, but he's *BETTER* at the promos and wrestling moves than they'll EVER be.
"Abaskcasckbackj" are you serious?!?! From 1997-2004 the only reason you watched wrestling at that time was to see one of the "Rock" promos or to see what he would do next. He and Steve Austin pretty much saved WWF. Don't get me wrong, Ric Flair was the greatest at selling himself. But like all the great ones, time starts taking it toll
@nscurge. Completely agree. Stone Cold and the Rock saved the WWE and for better or worse altered the course of wrestling. Flair is the greatest of all time, but an older Flair could not keep up with the attitude era even though imho Flair's the greatest
In the ring I agree about HBK measuring up to Flair, but Jericho's got a ways to go to get into that tier. On the stick only Dusty and maybe the Rock are in the Nature Boy's league. Thanks for posting.--777
Piper was just as good if not better "on the stick." The Rock doesnt even compare with the ones you mentioned. Take away foul language, and the Rock is mediocre.
The Rock Says this, The Rock Says that. Take away the same lines every fucking week like that, or....."Finally, the Rock has come back..... He was ok, but certainly will not stand the test of time. Sounds to me you are quite young to be saying what youre saying.....
Never took you seriously after your first comment. Just shows you really dont know wrestling when you put the Rock on the same platform as Piper and Flair. 10 years from now, few are going to remember the Rock.
@abaskcasckbackj ...Piper is indeed high on the list of great promo shooters, but Ric Flair was the best. And the fact that Ric was Champion so many times in his career, gave his promos that much more juice.
Funny thing was, until just a few months ago, I didn't even know JJ was only a few years older than Flair. He's 67 now (even though just those few months ago he told Mark Madden he was 64...), so he was a "young" guy back then.
Not really rare. Ric always liked Brad and they had some great TV matches in which Ric gave Brad a lot of offense including possibly the best TV match of 1995 on WCW Saturday Night. It shows you how un-selfish Ric Flair was and how willing he was to put anybody over and make them look good.
@ed2kou1 Wrestler??? Do you even watch Flair matches??? Its the same shit!!! Flair chop, Flair chop some more, get threw off the top rope, go ova the turnbuckle get clothsline out the ring, thts top ten to u huh? Who's your top 5 Cena??? And Bret Hart said the samething! Now wen u talking Kurt Angle, Bret Hart, Dean Malenko, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, Perry Saturn, RVD, Lance Storm, Booker T, Chris Jericho, then u can get a me!!!
@SydneyRico69 Wrestler yes! All those you mentioned are good, but they have the same moves as well. None of them guys mentioned can touch Flair on the mic, and they're not better wrestlers either. Flair has a lot more moves then you mentioned, you need to watch some Flair matches on youtube. You're not a Flair fan that's fine I am. I'm sure there's more Flair fans then not! Here's how you judge someone, listen to the way his co workers talk about him. They wanted to be Flair, not Hogan! WOOOO

10 years from now, few are going to remember the Rock.
abaskcasckbackj 2 years ago
@abaskcasckbackj ...Piper is indeed high on the list of great promo shooters, but Ric Flair was the best. And the fact that Ric was Champion so many times in his career, gave his promos that much more juice.

Flair might have been the man, but Tully was the baddest.

God I love his promos. He's fuckin' absolutely hilarious! This is the 12 Flair interview I've seen in a row.

Reverend Ric Flair, preaching the NWA message and saving wrestling fans, one fat boy at a time. Woooooooooo!!!

Nice work by JJ Dillon. He almost missed his '1word-per-promo' qouta, lol
starqb16 2 years ago
Funny thing was, until just a few months ago, I didn't even know JJ was only a few years older than Flair. He's 67 now (even though just those few months ago he told Mark Madden he was 64...), so he was a "young" guy back then.

Can ANYONE today do a promo like Flair? Vince has every detail scripted
that there is NO difference in promos.
Flair, etc did everything on the spot.
Take note Vince.

ur right no one can do a promo like flair but someone that comes really in my opinion is the heartbreak kid shawn michaels

Brad Armstrong got the rare rub in this one...
Go Ric.
bobber316 2 years ago
Not really rare. Ric always liked Brad and they had some great TV matches in which Ric gave Brad a lot of offense including possibly the best TV match of 1995 on WCW Saturday Night. It shows you how un-selfish Ric Flair was and how willing he was to put anybody over and make them look good.

they're always tryin wrap flair up! booo!

@dp100eboggan Every camera man should have known you don't wrap up flair, you wait until he walks off the set.

I love this shit. Flair the was the best on the mic. The Rock is a distant second.
shonuffshowstopper 2 years ago 4
I agree ! Not saying Rock wasn't great, but Flair wasn't going off of a script like the Rock. This shit was off the top of the head.

@CoryByrd2006 Yea Flair is great, but its things Hogan did tht Ric will and never did. Ever heard of the cover of Sports Illustrated???
SydneyRico69 10 months ago
@SydneyRico69 Hogan was a celeb. Flair was a wrestler! Flair greatest wrestler ever. Hogan's not even in the top 10! WOOOO
ed2kou1 10 months ago
SydneyRico69 10 months ago
@SydneyRico69 Wrestler yes! All those you mentioned are good, but they have the same moves as well. None of them guys mentioned can touch Flair on the mic, and they're not better wrestlers either. Flair has a lot more moves then you mentioned, you need to watch some Flair matches on youtube. You're not a Flair fan that's fine I am. I'm sure there's more Flair fans then not! Here's how you judge someone, listen to the way his co workers talk about him. They wanted to be Flair, not Hogan! WOOOO
