That Doc Brown near the end...anybody else find that he doesn't remind them of a historian at all? He seems way too confident, handsome and decisive in speech...odd.
I guess that the riddle about the letters of Queen Mary will never be solved: Was she involved in these plots or not? Or what role Queen Elizabeth played in her death; and more strange is that Elizabeth never made any serious efforts to determine her succession: Neither did she except James VI of Scotland nor did she declare any high English noble as her heir; as for King James: It does not help dumb or weak princes to read Machiavelli, also his son should reap his harvest of disaster.
@nacho1560 This is an extremely naive statement on many counts...
1) His mother was out of his life by the time he was 13 months old
2) He grew up to be Protestant, while his mom was a staunch Catholic
3) His mom was basically just a shadow in the background constantly trying to get herself back in power
4) It's not like James made some underhanded deal to become king that threw her mom under the bus. He had built his own future ever since he was a little boy, on his own.
@PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD Makes no difference. He was old enough to understand his mother was a prisoner and beheaded. He was 21 when she died. Her enforced absence in England was no excuse for him to forget her and not even make any attempt to have her set free. I suppose he was no different from most rulers, power meant more than family attachment. No. 4 is strange. Surely he was under the influence of some power mad adult and didn't build his own future on his own.
@nacho1560 The point is, it's very likely that James had closer family (in terms of who actually mentored him as he grew up) than his biological mother.
I thought the letter was a trap concocted by Walsingham so they could send Mary to trial? Not merely intercepted, but orchestrated from start to finish?
That's what I thought.....I thought it was a Walsingham plot....he was the chief Spymaster for Queen Elizabeth.....a very clever man.....Mary was a complete disaster as a ruler.......James was her only "weapon", if you will!!!!!
@SemiSlavable I think the jury is out on that one. There were a number of previous plots - maybe Mary was involved, maybe she was not. We will not know know.
I saw an interesting programme on the TV in 2005 suggesting that the Gunpowder Plot may also have been a set up job but the conclusion was that we will never know.
so Scotlands the UNICORN people will start misconceptions over that

"Elizabeth" was a great movie, Geoffrey Rush a great Walsingham, but be careful getting your history from films...

So much emotion put into this telling. It must have felt great being James, a Scotsman ruling England! :)

To let your own mother die in order to preserve your own power, what a wimp.
