Jeff Carson deserves so much more recognition from the music industry for bringing us songs that touch the heart and soul so much. This song and The Car are so beautiful and full of meaning in a world that can be so hard and cruel. Jeff sings them so well. His voice is like velvet. I could listen to him all day and never tire of the way his songs make me feel. I hope we are privileged to hear something new from you soon Jeff. The best to you always.
This reminds me of my old Black lab Jak, we had to give him away because we had no room for him to run or play.
I think about him every single day, but now he lives on a farm with two other labs. I wish that I could see him again, but I know that I never will and when I think of that it makes me want to cry.
Had this song in my head all week and so glad to find it. My husband and I finally had our first baby after years of trying and then had to get rid of our dog who couldn't get along with the baby, and we love our dog so much. It was hardest decision to make and this song covers both feelings so well. Thanks Jeff for recording such a special song.
Great to read the nice posts. This was my last song released that worked on the charts. Two great writers...I was honored to be the one to record it...thanks all.
@jeffhcarson1982 jeff this song started playing on GAC the very moment my father passed away, july 26 2003, he died with his hand in mine, it was the saddest day of my life, this song means more to me than anything, and I'm a new grandpa this month, I know he's looking down on my grandson with pride, I just wish he could be here for him to see his great grandson, thanks jeff Keith mann
I just heard this the other day for the first time. I can't listen to it with out crying but love this song. Maverick ... Best Friends, I love you and I will never be the same with out you. Until we meet again, you are in my heart Mavi. Thanks for being my very best friend, super therapy and service dog!
Oh my gosh, I have had my dog for as long as I can remeber and he would always protect me no matter what. Whenever my dad would wrestle with me my dog would growl and have my back. Well he is thirteen and probably won't be with us much longer. And I don't know what I'm going to do!
@adreamer101 It's him and his wife, and she doesn't die. They were in car accident and he had a near death experience, and he relived all the big important moments in his life.
can't stop clicking the replay.. Try to understand that people who do not have pets can sometimes be very insensitive with comments like
"It was only a dog". Ignore them and consider yourself blessed. Your life, unlike theirs,
has been enriched by the unconditional love and companionship of a dog.
:'( can't hide the pain i really miss my puppy wacky she died last may 29, 2011 its just like yesterday.. i know she's in heaven now just waiting i love u wacky we always love u
I love how humans are so quick to take a life of a dog
With no guilt
Yet, to me I think everything should have an equal chance at life
Including a dog
When a person bites someone else, they are told no and thats the end
When a dog bites someone, nobody tries to tell it no, nobody tries to train it, we instantly put it to death, like when a human brutally murders someone.
Im glad you love your dog... I loved mine too, but I put him down when he bit a little kid, because any human is way more important to me than the dog
Humans are more important than dogs? dogs are animals and technically we are too. it's like saying cheeta's are more important than tigers. Without other animals we wouldent be here! So think before you talk again because We are no better than any other animal.
From time to time people tell me, "Lighten up, it's just a dog," or, "That's a lot of money for just a dog." They don't understand the distance traveled, the time spent or the costs involved for "just a dog."
Some of my proudest moments have come about with "just a dog."
Many hours have passed and my only company was "just a dog," but I did not once feel slighted.
Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a dog," and, in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a dog" gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.
If you, too, think it's "just a dog," then you will probably understand phases like "just a friend," "just a sunrise," or "just a promise."
"Just a dog" brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy.
"Just a dog" brings out the compassion and patience that makes me a better person.
Because of "just a dog" I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future.
So for me, and folks like me, it's not "just a dog" but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past and the pure joy of the moment.
I think it is sad and all about the dog, I have lost good dogs in my life, but really people, its just a dog, and no dog or any other animal anywheres life is as important as a human life... The good of the baby being born in this song far out wieghs the sadness of a dog dying.
I have to say I am not a big fan of Country music, but this song really hits home for me. I have a 7 month old dog that is dying of a liver disease and it is tearing my heart out. Today may be the day I may have to put her to sleep.
The message here is deep. What Jeff is saying is that there are always stages in our lives when "Real Life" begins. This has been a favorite of mine for the last eight years. I do not mix up a country cd without including this song, Clay Davidson's - Unconditional or anything by Keith Whitley. Ben in Biloxi, Mississippi. :-)
If anyone listens to the message of this song, and says they're not touched has no emotions. The average lifespan is 70 years, and still the biggest impacts on your life are single people or single events. They shape who you are. After one single event, you may be a totally different person from one day to the next.
the first verse is. The song itself is about life changing events. His lost his dog who was his best friend. and "For the first time I knew what real pain was". Then, he goes to high school then meets his wife, has a baby, and loses his wife. He's saying all of those moments are what life really is.
he didnt lose his wife. the "one last breath" was just before the baby was born. "when it was over you looked up, i layed our baby across your breast." Great song.
i dare you to listen to this song and focus on a sad memory. :o) nice feeling to shed warm tears sometimes. don't tell anyone i cried, i'm a big boy now
My dog is dying of cancer, this is just reminded me that he doesnt have much time left, i couldnt stop myself from crying

"Just a dog" brings out what's good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day.
I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a dog" but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being "just a human."
So the next time you hear the phrase "just a dog." just smile....because they "just don't understand."
