There were only three great shows ABC did show on Saturday nights that were big in the ratings for them and our family watched them all. This was one of them. The other two were Fantasy Island and Lawrence Welk.

We still watch LW on PBS. All three programs were great shows that couldn't be done today. You would think that The Love Boat could be done since cruise ships are big business these days (in fact the show helped the business) but its a different industry than it was back then.

CBS owns The Love Boat when the Paramount merger happened since Aaron Spelling produced it with them. In fact when they did the reunion show of The Love Boat in the 1980s, it was shown on CBS instead of ABC.

Actually, it was slightly different in this version, even though the background shot is the same. He only does the one finger point here, whereas in later sessions it's a two finger point. Issac rocks.

The Wedge was extremely popular among all age groups. Girls and moms alike wore that style all throughout the mid to late 1970s. It became a hot style after Dorothy Hamill made her big splash in the 1976 Olympics.

It could be that CBS now owns the production company that did the show originally. You are right that it was originally on ABC. But the network is simply the distributor. The production company owns the rights.

I remember watching the Love Boat (and Fantasy Island) on a regular basis every Sat. night back in the early-mid 1980s when it still was originally on the air. There was and is something so SOOTHING about the opening theme as well as each and every episode. Entertaining too. Saturday nights are just not the same these days without The Love Boat (and Fantasy Island) airing on its usual channel (ABC) in its usual time slot (Love Boat: 9pm est, Fantasy Island: 10pm est). Its a crying shame, really.

that's right, people today are too snobbish or immature to accept shows like this. that's why something of this calibre, as campy (and I like campy stuff)as it is would never fly (or sail)

on TV today. (it did'nt work with the late Robert Urich in the 90s!)Sadly I think too many consumers todaywant the entertainment industry to do something other than entertain , they want shock value!

@narutomustgonow I think the late 90s syndicated version of Love Boat didn't work because 1st of all it was syndicated and had no network backing (a major network like NBC, ABC, CBS or Fox), and 2nd the novelty of this series was long gone. It was gone by the late 80s, to say nothing of the late 90s. There was a great novelty to this show and it's concept in the late 70s and early-mid 80s, it ran parallel to Happy Days with it's feel good wholesome routine.

People in the '70s were far more sincere and accepting.
