Sakhalin has been settled by Russians and Japanese for centuries but in 1875 Japan and Russia agreed that Japan would give Sakhalin Island to Russia in exchange for 18 (of a total of 56) Kuril Islands.

In the Russia-Japan war in 1905 the Japanese regained control of Sakhalin island and the Kyril islands and took entirely Sakhalin after the Russian Revolution in 1917 until 1924.

After WW II, USSR took control of the entire island, along with the Kurils islands.

Complicated in large part due to 3rd party factors dividing Russia and Japan . For over 150 years, through Perry's invasion to the Triple Intervention to WWI and WWII, Japanese and Russian relations have been complicated by the involvement of 3rd parties.

The Kurils are an excellent example of this, but so too is everything else from cooperation on North Korea to Sakhalin LNG deals.

Many people think "Russia" and they think of Eastern Europe; certainly this is true, but the country is vast, stretching up to the Japanese Sea (is that the name?). Russian Cossacks colonised the islands centuries ago- the Ainu being the first inhabitants (as with much of E.Japan), the Japanese then invaded and took the islands before Russia re-took them post WWII. If the Islands were anybodies firstly, they belong to the Ainu! As it is though, the islands have been saved from over exploitation.
