It's pretty simple. The game actually moves the entire level, and what's happening is that you're clipping a wall. It makes the game think that you're being crushed, and you always die when crushed.

You can get glitch crushed in some of the 16-bit games. It has to do with the placement of your character between things, but it doesn't always make sense.

Knuckles slid on the curve while landing on the flat wall at the same time causing the game to think Knuckles was being crushed between the ceiling and the wall causing Knuckles to die instantly upon collision.

It's a simple glitch of having the wall not long enough from the ceiling and the curve.
