you could prolly use a Y stick instead of indenting the stick tip, i have seen a variation of this trap where the Y stick part is actually stuck into the ground and does not fall when the trap triggers, it's just placed enough out of the way. nice vid !
i was just trying to make this trap with a knife. being an idiot and cutting towards me. stick broke, knife wint into my wrist, was a millimeter away from having to get arterial surgery and have to go see about getting surgery in the next couple of days. So be careful everyone. i hate learning stuff the hard way
What one could do is to substitute the deadfall for an arapuca cage. I know the arapuca has its own trigger mechanism but I prefer this one. Just a thought.
@jimmyk1love you could use either the paiute or the figure 4, but the paiute would be recommendation of the two for simplicity of setting and making. but the arapuca trigger is the best for the trap, it's the most sensitive and simple trigger for this, I might even try the arapuca trigger for a deadfall soon.
Man, that was a fantastic video Mike! 5 stars. I really liked seeing how you made the cordage. Some time I wood like to see how you processed the nettles. Blessings from NY.
Great video, also great cordage instruction, I was having trouble today with the figure 4. The Paiute deadfall looks like a better idea. Thanks, I know what I'll be doing tomorrow.
Please don't take my comment as critical. You should place the supporting upright at a more vertical angle. The top of the dead fall should land precisely at the base of the supporting upright. The supporting upright should be driven into the ground about an inch or two as it acts to trap the prey under the rock if they try to move away from the falling rock. You can also place a couple of other upright sticks to help prevent escape of the prey.
Plus I think it's a bad idea to rely on a skill you've only practiced hypothetically. I know there's laws and everything but... eh it's your choice I guess.
Good way to practice is if you have bothersome rats around your house. I live in the desert, so pack rats are a plenty. If there's no regulation against using a mouse trap, I don't see why this is any different.
i read 14 seperate books on survival and then i read a few louise la'amour book and learned almost twice as much. your video is better then both. yeah most show how to make a trap none teach how to make the materials.
lol these look like they will work, and i am sure they do. but it seems unless you have a HUGE rock it won't have enough force to kill something as big as a rabbit, i am sure it will kill mice and small birds but....
Great video - most traps require tools for their intricate assembly - thanks for showing one that is simple, effective and can be assembled without tools. I've seen this one in books but always liked the figure 4 deadfall more until I saw this one in action here in your vid. Thanks for posting.
He does not provide information as useful as the information given by Les Stroud and far less useful than Ray's.
Nothing really wrong with him, but he does not really survive in the wild, he shows a trick or two and than goes back to his hôtel. His thing is more of a show, and eating weird stuff than an actual survival situation.
Although Les does survive on his own, that show focueses more on watching him survive, not learning how. Bear SAYS that Man vs. wild isn't really him surviving, its showing you how.
Hello and thanks for the kind words. To answer your question, a good deal depends on what you have with you, the terrain and habitat, what you're attempting to trap, etc. Of course if you can, set both up and see what works. I'll be doing a snare video shortly which will hopefully provide a more complete answer. Take care, ML
Now that was a good dead-fall. But even being I think for simplicity a two-stick dead fall would be better still, since you don't need cutting tools nor need to hastle with making cordage. But, still this was a great video. Thanks for sharing.
Super video, and well explained. I teach survival to kids and adults. I now have all my classes watch your videos. Thank you for your super videos and techniques. You are a true 5/5* We will be ordering things from your website. Thank you!!!!
Sorry, my apologies for not being very clear. I should have said certain methods of trapping are illegal (such as spring snares in my home state of WA). I just want people to check their local and state laws regarding trapping before they go out and set traps...this avoids problems for them and me. Thanks for pointing this out and I hope you enjoyed the rest of my video. Happy trapping, ML
"I just want people to check their local and state laws regarding trapping before they go out and set traps..."
That's a much better way to state it. Trapping already has a bad enough rep withough suggesting that it's mostly illegal!
Great info on the Piute deadfall; thanks for sharing it. I've never tried either, but it sure looks a lot easier to make and set than a "figure four" type deadfall, which I hear about a LOT more.

i have a quick question...does it matter where exactly on the deadfall that you put the bait stick, or does it just have to be low enough to where the animal would reach it and it can stay sturdy all at the same time? That is, until the animal takes the bait.
you want to be sure that the animal will be in a good spot to have the rock crush him! and bait it b-4 you set it up. also use very little bait, and rub it in a crack or knothole. that way he has to work at it and moves the stick for sure!
Thanks for the kind words and for watching. To answer your question, the most important thing is to keep the bait stick horizontal and adjust the contact point with the toggle for the desired sensitivity (tip to tip for the most sensitive trigger). The height will depend on the target animal, but isn't as important as trap location and keeping the area free of your scent. Hope this helps. ML
Very nice, but you forgot to mention about actually baiting the bait stick. Smear some grease on it, or put some other bait (guts from a previous kill, some peanut butter, etc) on it BEFORE you set it up. otherwise, no bait = no animal.
Awesome video. I was searching other vids to expand my collection of useful knowledge and they didn't explain it nearly as well as you did. Materials list, how to construct and everything. Thanks.
Thanks for another great video. Im going to have to practice this one to get it right. Looks very effective. I could not believe how sensitive the trigger stick was. Jet over and out
Hello and thanks for the kind words. as far as bait goes, the Paiutes used pinenuts for the most part to catch squirrels. You can use other tasty items like acorns, maple seeds, etc. or look to what they have been browsing on but is now out of reach. A tiny bit of peanut butter out of your pack (if you're so lucky) works great on most anything. Learn the habits and tastes of your quarry beforehand so should you find yourself in an emergency situation, you'll be ready. Thanks for watching. ML
The Paiute deadfall has been around for about a thousand years before Les Stroud was born. I suggest you read Survival Arts of the Primitive Paiutes for more information.

wouldn't a forked stick work better for the vertical stick instead of needing to make a notch in top stick? would seem simpler and stronger.
