I don't think many people really appreciate Apollo 8 enough, especially when compared to the success of Apollo 11. But it was this mission that first sent human beings beyond the gravitational field of earth. So thus they were the first of many hopefully, to become star-travelers.

I agree, but wait untill Mars when everyone will only focus on that instead of the moon landing.
At the end of the day it was these guys which set the standard for going into space.
