  • Don't bite my head off for not knowing, but has she ever played Fantine? I'd love to see her live in anything, but especially in Les Mis!

  • God, she is so freakin fabulous

  • Susan Boyle was a made for tv creation , nothing more

  • Much better than Susan Boyle!

  • Her voice is so youthful and nice to listen to.

  • She is as nice a person as you can meet....very down to earth and warm

    Her voice is ammmmmaaaazing still

  • she was amazing when she was younger, but she's definitely feeling her age in terms of the beauty of her voice. but her musicality is like vintage wine.

  • Yes, and you're speaking of Broadway "veterans" of which Susan isn't. Let's not compare apples to oranges, and give appropriate credit to each. Peace...

  • love it

  • For all the Susan Boyle comments. First off Susan Boyle is NOT a broadway singer Andrea is. Susan Boyle is a good singer but Andrea is a broadway star!

  • Andrea has a wonderful voice! Beautiful! I wonder why she did not do more things after Annie and the TV shows as a kid. Why she never made it really big? was it her choice/

  • eww

  • I have been a fan of Andrea sence she was a you star on the old Mike Douglus show.

  • She makes a perfect Fantine, there is a warmth and yet sadness to it, true to the character. Susan Boyle can sing the song, but Andrea is also an actress and that makes a difference in a song like this. Andrea becomes Fantine when she sings this.

  • Ruthie Henshall is better but I do love her.

  • She has THEEEE BEST voice EVER!!!!! Loved her since 1977!!!!!

  • She is wonderful, yes better than Susan Boyle. Her part in Annie's "NYC" in the movie version slays me, absolute perfection. Never heard anyone better.

  • just wow

  • i saw her in les miz. as Fantine. she's wonderful!

  • That voice...amazing.

  • PIPES. Serious pipes!

  • Love her voice and how it's matured. She kind of reminds me of Bernadette Peters a little. Beautiful!!

  • Find her singing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" on youtube. Andrea is the only person I've heard who can compare to JG's performance. It's really incredible.

  • Ok, let's keep it real. Susan Boyle and Andrea are in two different leagues. I LOVE Susan more than words can say, but come on, Andrea is such a better singer its not even funny!!!

  • I find it weird that no one seems to be mentioning that Andrea McArdle was the original Annie on Broadway (You know: "Tomorrow, Tomorrow, I Love 'Ya, Tomorrow..." Curly Red wig and all!) is everyone just assuming that knowledge or am I the only one to remember? Oy... Her voice had held well - she still can belt it out!

  • Susan's version is beautiful, but in the context of the show, the song is sung by a very young woman, and Andrea did play the role for a while on Broadway. Tremendous voice, Andrea.

  • Hear Susan Boyle do this song on Youtube and hear the difference.

  • Great voise, but it seems more suited for On My Own?

  • This may sound weird: Was Andrea on the Gong Show in the 1970's? A young girl named Andrea sang "Ain't no Sunshine When She's Gone" and I was so blown away I still remember it. Her father accompanied her on guitar. She won too! Does anyone know?

  • She was on the Gong Show in 1976.

  • And I thought my memory was shot!! I'll never forget that performance. Thanks for letting me know. Wish I could hear her sing it again.

  • I know it isn't "politically correct" to say so, but I honestly enjoy Andrea's performance FAR more than Susan Boyle's. Susan's story is wonderful and she is talented, but her voice is too shrill for me. Andrea has a warmth and an earthiness to her voice that makes the song more powerful for me. I also think she's kinda hot. Just my opinion.

  • @nyre455 No way. I have not heard Andrea before and I don't think she can compare to Susan Boyle.

  • Absolutely beautiful and with much soul.

  • If you liked this, check out Neil Diamond's version and notice change of lyrics. Video link posted above.

  • gee, she sounds the same as she was when she was 11 years old;)

    shes very talented!

  • Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here!!

  • My love, I closed my eyes while listening and I saw a little girl with bushy red hair. I fear that your voice will never shift out of "Annie." You have a beautiful voice, you sang the song with technical prowess, but you have always been hard pressed to shift your voice out of the voice you had when you were 11. If you tried out for a travelling troupe of Les Misérables, you would not get the part. But I love you irrespective.

  • Funny you should say that, because she has actually played Fantine.

  • She played Fantine on Broadway

  • @MageSutek Andrea performed Fantine in the Broadway run of Les Mis. and did a great job in the role. She is not that little 11 year old anymore but she is still a very good adult singer.

  • Susan brought me here(from Phils) enough for the comparison ..the song is so beautiful that i guess MOST of us esp the judge and brtons caught flat footed to be reminded by themost unlikely singer SUSAN BOYLE... I agree though she got TALENT period.

  • Susan Boyle brought me here

  • Susan Boyle brought me here and she is much better, as she sings with her true heart.

  • This is a very goo verszion of this song !!

    Greetzz,

    Steven

  • ruthie henshall...far better than susan boyle.

  • Of course pro singers are better Doh , its the CONTEXT of the Doyle thing that makes it good.

  • people -Susan is good but pretty much any Broadway veteran can sing better than her including Andrea

  • @brilliant - you missed the point of her performance, of course.

  • Susan Boyle brought me here as well but none of these singers have measured up to Susan's performance. I love Andrea but I agree Susan made this her own...NH

  • Whatever anyone thinks of any particular performance, it is undeniable that Susan Boyle decided to make a trip to Glasgow and wait around for and audition for a few hours and almost be humiliated on stage and then in about 90 seconds made this song hers.

Andrea's is an amazing rendition, Ruthie Henshall's is incredible, and Susan's is certainly better than Pattie Lapone's, Elaine Paige's and Lea Solonga's, and her voice is completely unique and brilliant and touches the heart.

I also enjoyed Susan Boyle's and Andrea McCardle's interpretation of this song, however I disagree with your assessment of the others.

Which version of Lea Solonga's interpretation of this song have you heard?

I found Lea's to be exceptional.

  • I don't remember which version of Lea's I heard, but I'm glad that you enjoyed it. I have three favorites of this song: Susan Boyle, Ruthie Henshall, and a Norwegian performance sung in the language in an outdoor theater production, which can be found on YouTube. Susan Boyle was awful singing Memory, IMO, but her I Dreamed was absolutely outstanding. I just loved it, even with its faults.

  • I don't like Lea Solonga's singing because she over enunciates everything... sounds false and unemotional so.

I don't think Susan has an oustanding voice... it was just the unlikelyhood and Rocky Balboa underdog story. It's unfair for Susan to be compared to people like Ruthie or Patti since they have decades of pro work and training... Susan is a not bad church singer.

  • The beauty of Susan was that you could tell she felt the song. a lot of these concert performances lack some of the acting that would be present in the show. I am not a giant fan of Lea as Fantine, her Eponine however is one of the best I have ever heard

  • Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here

  • type 'i dreamed a dream 10th anniversary' for one that i think was better than susan.

  • What the hell is up with those cheap MIDI drums?

  • Susan Boyle brought me here

Hurray for Susan . I saw andrea mCcARDLE when she was in Annie. It is a pleasure to hear her voice again , this time in Youtube.

  • Susan Boyle brought me here

  • Susan brought me here from Ohio USA!

  • I'm struggling to find someone who can sing this better than Susan too!!

  • Check out the 10th Anniversary Edition of this performance--Ruthie .--....I think she's the best by far. But Susan's is definitely up there with a lot of these performers, and far better than Patty LuPone's

  • Sorry to break up the chain letter festival here. Andrea's voice is great and this is an excellent version of the song! However, I think it's going to be very hard for anyone other than Susan Boyle to get away with singing it in public - she's really made it her own! Having said that, nice job, Andrea! :-)

  • Susan Boyle brought me here from Branson Missouri, USA

  • Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here

  • Susan Boyle brought me here from Spain. Madrid and her version touched me. :)

  • Susan Boyle brought me here from Los Teques,Venezuela

    (1st to start :)

  • Good point Gayzertube, I didn't know it was on a Family Cruise, thanks for letting me know.

  • Andrea is very good, but Susan's voice is magestic and celestial. There hasn't been one singer on YouTube that matches Susan's. There are a lot of great singers and I really want to like them but sorry, just not as good as Susan.

  • Thanks for the video bdtb.Adrea sung it better than Aretha Franklin and Patti LuPone, just my opinion. Susan Boyle is great!

  • Why is an immense talent like Andrea McArdle working a cruise with wailing babies?

  • Very professional. Excellent version.

  • Too Much Orchestra, she has to compete with it. No good. Her voice is Beautiful, but that damn ensemble needed to cool it, and let her voice be heard.

  • That's the sound recording from a camcorder, not the orchestra.

  • Susan Boyle brought me here from Rio Tinto - Portugal!

  • Ms. Susan Boyle's performance was awesome. Sure, McArdle's voice was perfect...but it Susan gave the song a soul that nobody else can ever give. its just a personal opinion. there may be technical imperfections there...but it was made more than perfect by the personality that Susan was able to put in that song. Way to go, Ms. Boyle!!!

  • The song actually brought me here b/c i've loved it for years.....Andrea is an amazing performer also (Original Annie). There are HUGE differences from Ruthie, Andrea, Patti, Lea, etc and Susan. Susan gave me goose bumps and I've watched her 5 times now but all these broadway singers TECHNICALLY sing the song better is all.....The is an art to it.....

  • she can't compete with susan Boyle, no voice, no emotion !

  • oh yes she CAN compete with Susan Boyle. This performance is a different setting than Susan's. McArdle was performing for families at rosie o'donnel's show so she's not trying to "play" the character of Fantine. you should hear her recorded version from when she played this role on broadway. it is ALL emotion. she is a wonderful.

  • Ms. Boyle brought me here. Her rendition and performance was better than this. Where has she been all those years! A great talent! Way to go Ms. Boyle.

  • Susan brought me here. I've been searching for performances of this song to equal Susan's stunning rendition.

  • Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here.

  • Susan brought me here

Intrigued with 'there was a time it all went wrong....'

  • Strong voice and look ("Broadway"?), but for me not quite in character for Fantine. I'm missing a vulnerability that is part of Fantine's charm.... also, a pained deliberateness.

  • because she's not singing it in the context of the actual show. This performance was for an audience full of kids and parents on Rosie ODonnell's cruise, so she wasn't really "in character," just giving them an enjoyable, melodic 3 minutes. When McArdle played the role on Broadway she was breathtaking and heartbreaking.

  • Thanks for the context... but folks like me who tune into that video are prepared for a "Fantine performance", not just a McArdle display. But I do see that she is a powerful well-rounded performer...

  • Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here.

  • I agree.. I've listened to several versions and I like Susan's the best.

  • Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here.

  • Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here.

  • This one is lovely ~.....yes, but...Susan Boyle's was a surreal delight. Now, that was....amazing. And, yes sought a comparison...just so i wouldn't be biased. Well, sorry I am...Susan's is the benchmark for me! What an extraordinary voice she has.

  • I totally agree. I've listed to about 8 versions and Susan's is by far the best.

  • Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here.

So many people are finding other singers on you tube to compare with Susan! It's phenomenal. None I've heard so far has the real emotion or the compelling tone of voice.

    Susan Boyle rules.

  • Susan Boyle is the one to match

  • Susan Boyle sings it much better

  • She's great, but doesn't compare to Ruthie Henshall.

  • yeah like I have posted on so many Andrea videos, why are some people born with so much talent? I love listening to her, her voice is so cool. She is also really pretty.

  • She' s sooooo amazing I saw her play Fantine and Alexis played Eponine and they were so amazing!!! There voices are so similiar its crazy!!!!

  • She was amazing when I saw her as Fantine! and her daughter (Alexis Kalehoff) played Eponine! Alexis's talent definitally matches her mothers and Andrea Mcardle continues to amaze me!

  • Some serious lung-power there. She's STILL a star.

  • Comment removed

  • she is SO talented

  • Amazing girl ^^

  • such a beautiful voice. What a classy gal.

  • she still sounds like ANNIE! YEAH!

  • the ways she moves her head when she sings is exactly what she did when she was younger. i love it

  • Loved it!

(is it me, or for a half second did you think she looked like Julia Murney?)

  • omg i thought the same thing!

  • WOW! The kid has still got it. When she sings a song, you HAVE to feel it. Go get em, Andrea.

  • She's beautiful. and I love her! GO ANDREA!

  • I absolutely have adored Andrea McArdle ever since her star turn and she just keeps getting better and better. Her voice is one of a kind, really special. She really deserves a recording contract, I think and to work with the finest accompanists. If you agree with me on that, feel free to say so in the comments and maybe she'll get one!

  • i agree!

  • one of the best "IDAD"s I've heard!

  • Awesome voice!

  • love her!
