If somebody sets off the metal detector, you should be trying to find what set it off. 1st, check for prosthetics. 2nd, check the belt, shoes, etc. and get them to empty their pockets. If dealing with children, profile the parents. Do they look suspicious? The child is innocent, so leave them out of it unless you're certain they're being used to smuggle drugs or explosives, and if necessary take them to a private room and get a medical professional to examine them.

To all the people talking about rights...you do realize that the airline industry is NOT public transit? You are purchasing a ticket from a private company. When you purchase a ticket you agree to their rules. No one is taking away your rights. And the parents could at least do a better job there. I would be more upset that the parent allows their child to scream and holler and not take charge of your own kids. I wouldn't want to be the guy that has to sit next to a child like that.
