No one can tell a story in a song like Tom T. Hall. There is something about him that tells me that he may have lived some of his songs. Like a Grandma Moses painting, this mans performances and his songs are priceless.
best songwriter ever to me and this performance just gave me goose bumps! my dad turned me on to mr tom t. hall when i was a child and i went to nashville and i hope to be able to write a aaba song as good as his story songs and if i dont thats ok i can always listen to the master right here!
Wow! Always loved this song. And tonight a friend posted up how he loved flying into Chicago from the east - and that made me think of "I Flew Over Our House" - and then I found this!!! Thanks!
This song was written for my mother and father (Freddie Jim Hartline and Jeanette L Hartline) Fred and Jan I was born in 1964 and his parents lived next to mine in a trailer park in Grand Prairie, Texas my mother had the original on a 45 rpm record signed by him on the reverse side was Mr Bojangles.
BARBARA WALKER IS MY MOTHER IN LAW NOW AND IT IS THE ONE HE IS TALKING ABOUT IN THIS SONG , IT WAS AT THE SEVEN POINTS WESTERN CLUB
AT CEDAR CREEK LAKE IN TEXAS HE WAS WRITING A SONG AT THAT TIME IN THE LATE 60'S AND TOLD HER HE WOULD WRITE A SONG AND MENTION HER IN THE SONG AND HE DID , SHE HAS PICTURE OF HIM AND HER AT THIS TIME !!!
SHE HAS BEEN LOOKING FOR SOME ONE THAT WAS A CHILD AT THAT TIME THAT SHE BABY SET WITH , IF SOMEONE REMEMBERS HER AND WOULD LIKE TO FIN HER POST HERE I WIL CK B
As a small child, I had a babysitter whose name happened to be Barbara Walker. The first time I heard this song, my chin dropped at that last line. Of course I know it most likely isn't the *same* Barbara Walker, but I found it interesting.
@cruztacean contact me i think i know the barbara walker you remember baby sitting you , she has been looking for a child that she took care of... email me at... janetvince46@yahoo.com

I'm glad to see that Mr. Hall is still among us. When his time comes, I plan to pay personal tribute to him by serving hot bologna, eggs, and gravy for supper that night.
My mom is from Olive Hill, Ky. She dated Tom for a very short time in high school, as she put it, she was a cheerleader and he a football player. It didn't last long but every year we had to go to Olive Hill to hear Tom T. play in his home town. I always loved it!! When I had children I made sure they knew his music, it is so innocent and clean, not like the music now a days. I'm so glad that he is doing well and I pray he keeps writing!!!!!!!!
All of Tom T Halls songs have everyday stories in them, but to tell the whole story in a short song is unbelievable. It is the work of a master and Tom T is one. I have listened to his songs for forty years and they still sound as good as they did all those years ago,
Great song from a Country Music legend. I used "Homecoming" to help get me an "A" for a project in Mrs. Ellis' English class at TCHS in 1974. Thanks, Tom T!
Flat out the best "story song" ever written. It says volumes with just the perfect touch of subtlety. If it were a true story I'd bet money its was the kid's last time to see the old man.
I hear the magic too. I'm 35 and just discovered Tom Hall a few weeks ago and I can't get enough of him. This guy was a musical genius. I've talked to my dad and he knew all about him. Wish he would have played his music when I was a child.
@NAIAD49 Hi. I had forgotten your username and was trying to find it. Glad you sent this reminder comment.
Yes, I did post it. It's called "A Warm Place to Stay" on my bulbheadmyass channel. It was inspired by Tom T. Hall and an unnamed rodeo star. I think when you listen to it, you will agree that if Tom T.. Hall were a woman, he mighta written this song. It's a funny story, I think you'll like it. It is currenly the featured vid on my channel. I'll also send you by PM.
I grew up listening to Tom T Hall everyday and i still hear a new one every now and then, and i can honestly say i've never once heard one of his songs i didn't like.

@bulbheadmyass Also one of my favs along with 'old five and dimers like me'
I love the line at the end about country people not cleaning anybody else's shoes.
You got that song finished yet?........you said you would let me know.
Hello, Bulbheadmyass.....what does that name mean?....how did you come by it?
Sounds very rude.
