What a fascinating historical document. For me the encores are the best part of this 2nd half recital. I've always found his Mussorgsky transcription to be over inflated and crassly exhibitionist (no pun intended). However the encores are a marvel, The Scarlatti a model of restraint and purity, the Schumann magically tender, Moszkowski witty and simply dazzling and finally Stars and Stripes - sleight of hand, or should that be 3 hands?.
