Here's the reason manuals in nice cars are going out of production: most young people (like me) prefer the feel of a manual but can't afford a supercar. By the time you can afford a supercar you are old and don't like manuals as changing gears hurts your shoulder. Of course I'm exaggerating a bit but the essence of this is true. Give me another reason if you don't agree but this is just my opinion
I'd pick the old GT2 RS any day of the week. If you look at the trap speeds you can see who is making the REAL power. LF-A: 123-124mph, GT2 RS: 130mph. And then there's the weight...LF-A: 3600lbs, GT2 RS: 3100lbs. Can't imagine what kind of ass whopping the 991 GT2 RS will deliver.
@BoredomKills25 I agree 100%, the LFA and the other gismo tech cars are for rich people that want to brag about having expensive technologically advanced cars. The GT2 RS is for the car enthusiast that likes to drive. The way it goes, in the future the cars will be doing everything, the driver is going to be a passenger...that's going to be a SAD day!
@riorin8829 No but you can say Japanese Cars are better in performance, fuel efficiencies, pricing and resale value, on the other hand German Cars are better in quality, better designed and finishing, luxury and good engineered, looks clean and expensive. German Cars are for rich people, Japanese cars are for price conscious people, Both are best cars. I would prefer Japanese Cars because excellent performance with low maintenance cost, preferably Toyota...
@ohshizzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Your comment is one of the best I've read about German cars vs Japanese cars!!
Unfortunately most people don't get it, they don't understand why would Dodge -for an example- build a car like the Viper, no technology here or elechtronics to help you out, just a raw driving machine, it's what Supercars or a sports cars are all about, now most of today's supercars my old man can drive easily, automated gearboxes, launch controls,.etc.
@bttawfiq I thought Americans don't put computers in cars because they don't know what computers are.
Next time your old man can easily drive a F1 car, with its automated gearbox and its launch control, you let me know. To me, supercars are about driving quickly, using the most expensive (or at least the best) technology available at the time.
@bttawfiq Not at all. I wouldn't be able to drive an F1 car easily, especially at the limit. They can pull 4-5G in high speed corners, and the same under heavy braking. That's some serious shit.
They also have some serious power combined with lightweight, so they lose traction at low speed quite easily, especially if you have a heavy foot.
@200208195 Ahh, I thought we were talking about road cars, and yes, I won't argue on the F1 race car being fast enough to re-arrange your internal organs!!
However you are saying that Supercars are all about going fast, that's it. IMO a supercar or a sports car has to have a traditional manual gearbox and be more challenging to drive, more engaging. Cars like that would be the GT2 RS, Viper ACR, Corvette ZR1, Carrera GT,...etc
@bttawfiq Yes and no. I don't think they need to be challenging to drive. I think that they should be fast and entertaining. I also think they should be packed full of the latest technology. I do love driving with a solid manual, but I definately see the performance advantage of the robotised-manual. I also believe that robotised-manuals can have an almost identical feel, soul if you wish, to a traditional manual, but allow for greater focus on the positioning of the vehicle.
@200208195 Well it is actually a matter of tastes, it is why Ferrari still offers a traditional manual as an option. I've tried both, and while the feeling of those automated manuals is great going through the gears I still love the old fashion manual transmission, I'm afraid a day will come when car companies no longer provides traditional manuals, even some small economic cars such as the Ford Focus now has double-clutch transmissions!!
@bttawfiq That's because they change gears so quickly, there is virtually no loss of power to the wheels, allowing for greater fuel efficiency. Performance cars use them because gear changes can take as little as 20ms. So much quicker than a traditional manual.
@bttawfiq Actually the choice in cars is a matter of choice but as far as transmission goes there is not an option for a manual gearbox in any current Ferrari. Nobody was buying them and the dual clutch is so much more efficient they have completely dropped the option for a manual gearbox from all Ferraris.
@ohshizzzzzzzzzzzzzzz I'm pretty sure most modern German cars have around the same amount of computing power as the LF-A, if not more. Look at the most Porsches, any BMW, any Audi, any Mercedes...
Why not get yourself a Model T Ford and control the mixture or go back to no syncros and double clutch. Drag yourself up to modern times would you.
Porsche sell more cars with the double clutch gearbox now. And they have launch control and AWD with torque vectoring. The fact that they offer a couple of track ready models doesn't change the fact that all their bread an butter cars do just as much for the driver as the Japanese cars.
@ohshizzzzzzzzzzzzzzz The only car that fits what you describe is the GTR which is a marvelous car in its own right. I hate to say this but things will be automated for future cars because that is how you go fast which is the objective of a supercar. But the lexus LFA, not so much. It's your typical exotic.
@ohshizzzzzzzzzzzzzzz This is the most true statement (and best put) that I have read about this matter. This is just what the GTR and other fanboys don't get. they think that the faster a car is, the better it is to drive. WRONG. look at a Cayman or Focus RS
@charlesholzy i agree but think of this toyota and nissan make the most reliable cars. so why can't they make a really fast car that is really good quality? It took 10 years in the making. For asians guys to think on a car for ten years i don't what you think its has to be a good quality car
I'll give you a truthful hint as to why the Lexus LFA took 10 years to develop. They were innovating different onto how to construct it with lightweight materials. They've pioneered it all now. Everyone else including Lamborghini, Ferrari are now turning to Lexus and Nissan for ideas. Yet the LFA is one of the most reliable and agile hypercar on the planet. Its Beauty with technology and is a proper drivers car. 997 GT2 RS is a good 'old school' drivers car, It's that simple
@ohshizzzzzzzzzzzzzzz estas eqiuivocado , el lexus no tiene AWD para no perder el control , el porsche si lo tiene , en el resto de las cosas son similares
@ohshizzzzzzzzzzzzzzz but this is one of the more pure Japanese cars.. the only one that isn't pure is the GTR.. this doesn't have all those computers, this only has paddle shifters, and nothing else like splitting torque between each of the wheels.. though the GT2RS is my favorite supercar along with the LFA..
its like whatever if the porche is faster, cause luxury wise the Lexus slaps porsche on the fingers.. It has probably the highest technology built in ever existed. and its electronicly blocked in the speed.
whoa! you're looking at shift lights and grabbing gears?!? is the radio on too? that would be the killer. having to shift AND listen to the radio is hard work.
On the Nordschleife the LF-A was a few seconds faster than the GT2 RS. I think the are very different made, different to drive, feel different but the result of speed on a track is very equal.
@7Nub2Nub83 pleas don`t compare cars @ the Nordschleife!!! it`s not about cars it`s about how CRAZY you are believe you me it`s like riding on the streets..i did a 8:13sec around the ring with a 600cc in my youth @ my first attempt.. and now on my 1000cc 9:01sec, i don`t have the urge to be crazy anymore... and on Valencia a REAL CIRCIUT the 1000cc was over 3 sec faster per lap.. Meaning in my youth i was crazy as fuck on dangerous places street/ the ring.. so crazy on the ring = good lap time..
Well, as you can see ... it wasn't me who compared these cars. It was the one who made this video. I just wanted to say ... all this better or worse-thing is crap. Everything depends on what you want. And there are so many more factors for a car than just how fast it goes on a dragstrip.
@7Nub2Nub83 the fastest lap of the LF-A took 7.38 min (the Garlado had same time) the GT2 RS was around 14s faster... I think you can't compare the cars.. If porsche would put a PDK in the GT2 RS it would be even faster but the GT2 RS is designed to be pure racing car and is not ment to be driven on public roads... The LF-A is a little bit more comfortable.
@TheSteinerJ Yes, but Lexus made a Nurburgring package for the LFA (new suspesions and aero, 100kg lighter and 10 hp more, perhaps new tires) and it did 7min 14 on the ring
