Always felt rather sorry for TJ's character in this sketch. It's quite sweet how you can see that Michael is trying to control himself before the pie-sharing incident lolol
This isn't rare, it's from Live at the Hollywood Bowl which was filmed in 1982
Chapman wasn't clearly drunk since he'd quit drinking before filming Life of Brian which was filmed in 1975. Getting sober almost killed him and he'd never touched the stuff again.
His drinking was actually a contributing factor to John Cleese quitting the Pythons. Him and Graham where writing partners and he became intolerable to be around.
@rrtodd95 Okay I know I'm late in commenting, but yes he is drunk, because this was NOT the version from Live at the Hollywood Bowl, this is much earlier than that. He was still drinking at this time. Although I have to agree, this isn't rare, you can buy this on DVD
@armandin2048 I think he meant "dimension", in lieu of his quote having been only "extended" with no clue as to which direction it was going in the first place. But you must've been onto something to have him come back here after six months!
i LOVE this sketch. At my school, the junior class always does a talent show. When my brother was a junior they decided to make it a british theme, so they did 3 or 4 Monty Python sketches during it [including this one], and even called it "And now for something completely different..."
Pre-Python, at University, Cleese and Gilliam were in the Cambridge Footlights with the future Goodies: Bill Oddie, Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden. The two groups had multiple connections.
I don't think it's possible to be under the influence of anything with those lines. I don't think i could do it sober! (although, Graham was such a good actor, he could probably do anything.)
@rmenardster Because anyone in the world can upload to youtube and therefore any footage, no matter how many copies exist in the world, can be uploaded.
It's as though the entire sketch is just on the fringe of disaster for the whole time: one good improvisation away from making all of the actors crack up -- and that's what makes it so bloody good!
i agree, that Graham Chapman didn't look all that drunk...perhaps a little tipsy, though (I certainly couldn't have read all that out/remembered the lines if I was drunk...damn)
and how, how HOW did Michael palin keep his face THAT deadpan...?!?!

oh my god, chapman looks terrible. its too bad he was an alcoholic, I bet if he hadn't drunk so much he'd still be around. I mean, I know he had cancer, but the drinking probably helped it along. A LOT. Cancer loves sugar in the body
Rare or not, this is some classic, badass, AWESOME as hell, hardcore Monty Python shit. I'll be watching his stuff until the day I die. And STILL be laughing all the way. Kudos to the English. You guys rock!
