In my opinion, it was just the basic pillar of comedy known as misdirection, where something is set up to be one thing (the macarena) but then the viewer is hit out of nowhere with something that doesn't make any sense in context (9/11), which can be funny in many cases and keeps viewers from becoming bored with catching every joke the comedian tells due to reading the setup.
