@anibalserenelli those are Tama Octobons, based on the old Canon Toms, and yes, he could really beat the shit out of 'em!!! Saw him twice with Ozzy and once with Pat Travers in Vegas, RIP Randy!
randy Castillo and jimmy (The Rev) Sullivan were my fave drummers ever, and now they are both dead. surly other people can see the similarity between the two
He was such a fabulous drummer and a great guy. I remember when he decided to move to California and audition. The last time I saw him in person was in the early 80's. He was with his old band mate Rick and they were both doing well. Thanks for posting the video - it's nice to be able to watch him play.
I met Mr. Castillo in Sacramento at an Ozzy/Vixen/White Lion show. He was backstage sitting all by himself on some road cases. He's a very nice, mellow, down to earth fellow. RIP, drummer. If there's a rock and roll heaven, then you know they have a hell of a band.
.... R.I.P. Randy Castillo - Millions of records sold, Thousands of gigs played and for sure a lot of fans. Try to have someone say the same for you when you die.
... This is a very good drum solo. I too can play a more technical solo (i'm sure Randy could too), but will it be better? You also have to play solos according to the crowds. It's something you find out when you have experience doing it. I'm sure the crowd in this gig was all technique geeks... Try to criticize something when it's badly done. Not just because it's easy! That's the difference beetween youtube kids wannabe musicians and Musicians, technical or not! ...
...That's what it's all about. Not speed, not technique! The difference between them and someone like the person who made the last comment wich i assume came from a drummer (but for sure not a MUSICIAN) is that they know when to put their enourmous technique to use and their fans don't. ...
You still don't get it, do you? It doesn't matter if you have all the technique in the universe, it doesn't matter if you can do double, triple strokes with the hairs in your ass! If you can do it fine! Good for you, it shows practice. But it doesn't necessarily show talent or musicality.
I really liked this version of Ozzy's band. Randy was the perfect drummer for Ozzy - even when Zack and Mike Inez were playing. Not a fan of Mike Bordin.
I have his starlicks drumming video on VHS, he was what got me started into drumming...was a total badass, if anyone finds his Drumming video pick it up and watch his skill, far more then what he showed with ozzy most of the time.
sorry...didn't mean to sound so harsh on Mike Bordin. I do like him but he doesn't fit Ozzy in my opinion. Ozzy was spoiled with Randy Castillo I believe....lol.
Bordin is definitely solid ..... but I feel he doesn't add that same finesse to Ozzy's music. Ozzy's past music is more important obviously than his newer stuff because of it's age. The past drummers were solid but also put some flash into the songs instead of keeping it straight.
I first saw Randy at GodFather's n Denver with the Wumblies lat 70's (maybey 78?)
I watched him twirl his sticks, hit kicks with the band as he caught them, hang up side down and play, but I always loved when he hit his head with both hands - his trademark.
I walked away from that show like a a frog that had just had his brains stirred (ok hopped away)
Actually Randy was Ozzy's drummer for over 10 years. Closer to 12 or 13 I believe. In 1995, about 10 years after starting w/Ozzy Deen Castronovo was brought in to play on Ozzmosis. But Randy did the tour in 1996.
A great drummer w/lots of power. And a great drum sound. One of my favorites for sure.
Randy was a fantastic drummer. I had the honor of seeing him perform live a few times. He died of cancer in 2002, and yes he did play on the No More Tears cd.
I followed randy for a long time , what a tragic loss,he was fucking amazing, he is sorley missed, one of metals most influentual drummers. rest in peace randy. stay metal!!!
I knew Randy in the early early years in Albuquerque, New Mexico, He was always the best, always won the battles. We all LOVED him here in his home town. What a terrible loss.
fuck is dis drum solo GREAT !!!....growing up randy was 1 of my idols..i play drums and when i solo der is a hint of randy in der....he did alot of 2h*4f--4h*4f....h=hands+++++f=feet...i love it when he stood in front of da drums and did his shimmy.....fuck dat is kewl....i gotta do dat in my solos 2...RIP RANDY....MISS U....U MAY HAVE LEFT,BUT U LEFT A LEGACY....later dude....
this is great. his drumming is different, i especially like those long small tom-like things to the rite of his drum set he plays on. i like the sounds of his snare too. RIP randy
Now...that was creative! Interesting use of his foot on the drum set when he drops Mary Had a Little Lamb (Merrily we roll along) in the mix of the solo. (1:56...)
not just that he was able to put the crowd behind him which i've have yet to see a drummer do but im more aof a bass player guitar player so normally don't look up drum solo's but this is defanitly one of my favorites most guys are just fast but who the fuck cares if ur fast my computer can go fast too
We'll see Randy C. and all the great music makers, that left this place before us, again one day - I'm convinced of that; like that song "Soul Heaven"; I for one will be right up there in front! Yes R.I.P Randy - You are loved by many!!!
I remember seeing Randy with Ozzy when Ozzy headlined at the Monsters Of Rock festival at Castle Donington here in the UK, in 1986! It just blew me away!! What a magical night! God bless you Randy, my friend! You were, and always will be, simply incredible!! We miss you! R.I.P (:o(
still remember meeting him in his club playing days in the early 80s at prosound music store, i believe he was with the wumblies then.i was too young to get in the clubs or we would have gone to see him play, bruce said the man was something else on the drums, well he was right as usual
