The video on Youtube of Richter playing this is faster, I'm sure Lisitsa could play it just as fast if she wished to. That video is simply Richter showing off, it's unlikely he always played it that fast as the piece inevitably loses some of its dynamics. This is an ideal speed, still furiously fast but with just enough breathing space for the piece to sing.
I'm trying to keep tens of classical pieces in my head for a uni christmas exam I have in half an hour and I get bombarded with stupid ads which make me forget everything!
@JT112358 yeah i agree actually. the audio sounded completely fine to me but on the screen she looked really jerky - probably because it's 240p. anyway richter has gone much faster
I studied this piece last year and it took me more than six months to learn it. This interpretation is one of the finest. The phrases are arched, the clarity is flawless, the impressions are perfect, and I have never seen anyone play it this fast with this much clarity. I was able to hear every note. Thank you Valentina for posting this. This is incredible!
@BiggestPossible You know, comments like that which are one of the top comments along with the person's screen name being "Biggest Possible" doesn't do your argument justice.
@kayboardkid94 I completely disagree; everyone has their own interpretation of music. Even though one may be able to play this piece, beauty != ability to play. Frankly, I find like Brendel's performance of this Etude much better than Lisitsa's performance.
I love the reactions. Keep in mind, Etudes are meant to play quickly. Further, when 'professionals' play in recital, typically, they do the entire "book" OP 10 - 1/12 so you have to learn quickly.
i'm from mississippi. We are still stupid rednecks down hear. My son got computer for me. I turned it on and hear this girl playing. I jumped back from the desk got down on my knees and and told elvis to go to hell cause I would be burnin his records (and Mel Tillis too) cause now I have heard a heavenly angel play the impossible.
I fucking hate this etude, I have been practicing this for 4 months or something, but i still can´t play this at right speed. I´d say that it´s more harder than Op 10 no 2 and Op 25 no 6.
@EmilRaja i guess i believe you,but i can tell you even tougher etudes of chopin like 25-10,11,12...and this etude isnt harder than 25-6,all are difficult in its own way
she can play this in 2 days....i remember she said that to play totentanz she locked up herself with the piano for three days and there you go...really, compared to that, this is nothing lol
I love watch her play this piece, her fingers just seem to caress the keys, and she makes it look so easy. I'd love to be able to play with her finesse at even a 1/3 of the speed :-)
To my recollection, Chopin was heavily influenced by Bach. It makes sense. This piece sounds like an inspired version of the Bach English suite no. 6 'gigue'. I wonder how many hours a day Ms. Lisitsa practices her scales.
Horowitz played this brilliantly, and yet his rendition seems strained and stilted compared to Valentina Lisitsa's. His rhythm isn't as perfect either.

I think this is how this piece should be played, whether Chopin wanted it played like this or not!
How can there be a dislike button in this? After seeing 113 dislikes in this video I guess we shouldn't give much attention to all those "piano expert critics" we meet at youtube...
Privet! You are one of the best piano playes i've ever seen in my entire life! Congrats from Argentina and I hope some day you'll come to my contry and give a concert! Congrats Congrats Congrats!
I have yet to find a recording of you playing chopin's first ballade. Considering it will take you about an hour and a half to learn, I think me and everyone else who loves that piece would greatly appreciate it if you recorded it. For the time being only the bravest of the concert pianists have attempted it, which is unfortunate.
@keyboardkid94 If you start playing the piano with no basics it would take 8 years to learn it, but if you have played the piano for 8 years it might take 2 days to learn it...
@keyboardkid94 after 7 years of playing the piano, i can say that a person of my level can learn this etude within 4 months time (4 weeks=>4 lessons for just the notes)...Lisitsa plays, though, can pretty much play it prima vista!
@keyboardkid94 well technically, she probably started piano when she was 6 or so and im gonna get shes 24 now, so really it took her 18 years to play this. If i started to practice exactly wat she did those 18 years right now, it would probably took me 36 years rofl
