@morninwoodyo is completely right, I'm from Scotland and currently go to College in Alabama and even though Bryant-Denny Stadium has over 100,000 people in it, the atmosphere and noise isn't the same as my national stadium in Glasgow any time we have a soccer match and it holds about 45,000.
Just look up any video of Hampden Park atmosphere and you'll get what I mean

@LachlanRFC this was 25min before kickoff, plus the video was shot all the way up in the upper neck (directly in front of the speakers). our student section alone can produce more noise than your entire stadium, and next year it is only going to get louder cause they are moving it to maximize noise levels on the field. we have a very open stadium so it is the worst design to hold noise, yet we still push the decibel level easily over 100

Look up "Corsi" Their the core support of a Turkish "soccer" club called Besiktas. What they lack in numbers compared to this, they make up for in sheer passion. Other clubs that have mental support are Red Star Belgrade and Boca Juniors.
you need to look into the support that we put in AND sheer numbers. considering that we have a couple hundred people who camp out in front of the stadium the week before each game just to get good seats, and it fills up because there isn't enough room for everyone to camp. plus our fans wait in line all day just to move up a couple rows...and all of us (110,000) coordinate colors and yell for the entirety of the game....
U have great support no doubt, the commitment is unreal. How often is this paticular game played? Only one thing that makes me wonder, and this isnt a dig, but why the music? i know it creats a carnival atmosphere which is spectacular but i like every other englishmen prefer to here the fan's voices. well this video was taken in the upper decks, sound just propagates out of the stadium because of the way the stadium is built, so it doesn't retain much noise. If you could find a couple videos of ground level noise then you would understand that they are playing some songs on the speakers but people only use that as a que to start singing. the stadium is so big that it is near impossible to start some songs.----->>>>>(more)
When the fans try to start the songs on one side of the student section, then by the time the sound gets to them on the other side, people are already off beat cause the time diff....so you have to have something neutral to start the command to go. thats why ppl on the field start it, cause everyone can see them, or the speakers
I think you've answered that fantastically. I suppose having a 110k seater stadium and having a roof to recycle the atmosphere is to much to ask. The best example i have is the Camp Nou in spain, the home of Barcelona FC, it hols 98k and has one poultry roof, to keep the men in suits dry i think. Despite this support they get nothing near Liverpool fans or fenerbache fans for noise who sit under four roofs yet have half the capacity, it makes a hell of a difference.
I bet you are right because I have been to playoff flyers (NHL...hockey) games and they seat like 20,000 and that has to be the loudest environment my ears have ever had to endure. the noise in an enclosed setting is out of control. But that said there have been psu players who have been quoted saying that the noise was so loud they had to hold their helmet down to keep from rattling so they could think straight. 05 OSU players were quoted as saying that that game was the worst of their life...
But I am sure that European football games are just as bad, I just think that most Europeans don't understand the scale of what is going on in the states and that there are groups of fans who are just as passionate as they are. There is no beer allowed in Penn State games at all, and half the students can't legally drink (not to say it stops kids from trying considering we are the #1 party school in the country) but still there are cops when we walk in. The old stadium in Philly had a court inside the stadium process crimes that happened in there. Who is to say that because your stadiums are allowed to get so violent that ours would be just as bad if they were allowed to get THAT bad.

well I would just blame that on terrible security, lets be honest here: security over there is no-where near over hear. I mean we have to pass through medal detecors going into Eagles games, and they have High-Tech security cameras that watch the crowd with anonymous tip line where fans can text to receive aerial support from the cameras in the stadium. We also have cops at every set of stairs... Plus it doesnt help that a beer cost easily around 8 US dollars for a beer and no hard alcohol.

@LachlanRFC this was 25min before kickoff, plus the video was shot all the way up in the upper neck (directly in front of the speakers). our student section alone can produce more noise than your entire stadium, and next year it is only going to get louder cause they are moving it to maximize noise levels on the field. we have a very open stadium so it is the worst design to hold noise, yet we still push the decibel level easily over 100

Look up "Corsi" Their the core support of a Turkish "soccer" club called Besiktas. What they lack in numbers compared to this, they make up for in sheer passion. Other clubs that have mental support are Red Star Belgrade and Boca Juniors.

you need to look into the support that we put in AND sheer numbers. considering that we have a couple hundred people who camp out in front of the stadium the week before each game just to get good seats, and it fills up because there isn't enough room for everyone to camp. plus our fans wait in line all day just to move up a couple rows...and all of us (110,000) coordinate colors and yell for the entirety of the game....

U have great support no doubt, the commitment is unreal. How often is this paticular game played? Only one thing that makes me wonder, and this isnt a dig, but why the music? i know it creats a carnival atmosphere which is spectacular but i like every other englishmen prefer to here the fan's voices. The hairs on the back of your neck will stand to attention. But again, you seem to be unique in American sport, thumbs up to ya!

well this video was taken in the upper decks, sound just propagates out of the stadium because of the way the stadium is built, so it doesn't retain much noise. If you could find a couple videos of ground level noise then you would understand that they are playing some songs on the speakers but people only use that as a que to start singing. the stadium is so big that it is near impossible to start some songs.----->>>>>(more)

When the fans try to start the songs on one side of the student section, then by the time the sound gets to them on the other side, people are already off beat cause the time diff....so you have to have something neutral to start the command to go. thats why ppl on the field start it, cause everyone can see them, or the speakers

I think you've answered that fantastically. I suppose having a 110k seater stadium and having a roof to recycle the atmosphere is to much to ask. The best example i have is the Camp Nou in spain, the home of Barcelona FC, it hols 98k and has one poultry roof, to keep the men in suits dry i think. Despite this support they get nothing near Liverpool fans or fenerbache fans for noise who sit under four roofs yet have half the capacity, it makes a hell of a difference.

I bet you are right because I have been to playoff flyers (NHL...hockey) games and they seat like 20,000 and that has to be the loudest environment my ears have ever had to endure. the noise in an enclosed setting is out of control. But that said there have been psu players who have been quoted saying that the noise was so loud they had to hold their helmet down to keep from rattling so they could think straight. 05 OSU players were quoted as saying that that game was the worst of their life...

But I am sure that European football games are just as bad, I just think that most Europeans don't understand the scale of what is going on in the states and that there are groups of fans who are just as passionate as they are. Shit, go to Philles MLB games or Eagles NFL games over here and you will hear horror stories of what has happened to opposing fans. there was a guy shot outside a phillies bar last year and countless hospitalized at Eagles tailgates

There is no beer allowed in Penn State games at all, and half the students can't legally drink (not to say it stops kids from trying considering we are the #1 party school in the country) but still there are cops when we walk in. The old stadium in Philly had a court inside the stadium process crimes that happened in there. Who is to say that because your stadiums are allowed to get so violent that ours would be just as bad if they were allowed to get THAT bad.

well I would just blame that on terrible security, lets be honest here: security over there is no-where near over hear. I mean we have to pass through medal detecors going into Eagles games, and they have High-Tech security cameras that watch the crowd with anonymous tip line where fans can text to receive aerial support from the cameras in the stadium. We also have cops at every set of stairs... Plus it doesnt help that a beer cost easily around 8 US dollars for a beer and no hard alcohol.

UofM student here. I went to the game up in Happy Valley last year. I obviously wont talk about the game itself (ugh) but the atmosphere there was just amazing. Looking forward to seeing you all at the Big House come October =)
