@mohiece - My friend it was not the burning of the train that caused it. Actually, a fight between a local vendor at the Godhra station with some civilian caused this.. You should read "Scarred" by Dionne Bunsha

There has never been any untoward incident post godhra, a justification enough of Modi's Administrative qualities further the case against Modi's involvement is subjudice, so the fact that so many lives ended in a brutal manner, people needed to demonize someone to vent there ire and Modi was the easiest choice.
