The main difference between a Civil Union and a Marriage is that a Marriage is a covenant made to the Lord; while a Civil Union is a contract with the government.
Since in the Bible it states that when making this covenant to the Lord, marriage is to be only between one man and one woman. Many people want to keep the "word" marriage for those who are making this covenant to the Lord.
This isn't prejudice. Now, if Civil Unions were not available it would be an injustice and unacceptable.

The first is your definition of the word "marriage". In the Oxford English Dictionary, marriage is defined as such: "The relationship between two married people." YOU might view this as a promise to your God, but that doesn't mean everyone else has to.

That was a very good breakdown. My only stipulation is that marriage IS a religious act and is only de jure through the 1st amendment. Otherwise it is de facto. Since the state can't dictate religion, they cannot debate what is de jure and de facto; that power goes to the religious official who observes the ceremony. therefore "traditional marriage" is still protected if they'd just recognize de facto partnerships and le tthe churches debate about what's de jure.

The main difference between a Civil Union and a Marriage is that a Marriage is a covenant made to the Lord; while a Civil Union is a contract with the government.
Since in the Bible it states that when making this covenant to the Lord, marriage is to be only between one man and one woman. Many people want to keep the "word" marriage for those who are making this covenant to the Lord.
This isn't prejudice. Now, if Civil Unions were not available it would be an injustice and unacceptable.

The first is your definition of the word "marriage". In the Oxford English Dictionary, marriage is defined as such: "The relationship between two married people." YOU might view this as a promise to your God, but that doesn't mean everyone else has to.
The second issue is that a civil union is NOT the same thing as a marriage. Civil unions do not provide the same benefits and security that marriage does.

The world has not come to an end, we're still alive and my uncle and aunt could still get married happily without their marriage being of less value, just because two men or women can get married too.

I remember one commercial in which two men meant to be Mormon missionaries broke into a gay couples home and took their wedding ring. This commercial was supposed to help gay marriage, but I believe it actually hurt the movement.

Speaks volumes about their moral sensibility, though.

Of note, you mentioned that straight couples who personally know gay couples tend to support same-sex marriage. I've seen this true. My parents were against same-sex marriage because "it's only about the money." Although I knocked down this argument repeatedly, they stuck to it.

Christianity and homosexuality can co-exist peacefully. It's sad to see all the name calling. What it boils down to is we need to respect each others beliefs and the rights to live by them so long as they do not physically harm others.
There are many churches who believe God blesses same sex marriage, and there are those who believe the opposite. A vote allowing gays to marry is not a vote against religion. It's a vote allowing various religious beliefs.

99% are not atheists, it.s quite the reverse. Actually, there are a variety of faiths that gays practice. Many go to church, synagogues, etc. Many hold positions within their faith. There are gay Bishops, Chaplains, prayer leaders, ministers, and the list goes on. All God's children are loved by God, which includes God's gay children. No where in the Bible do God or Jesus say that gay people in loving, committed relationships are sinners. God is love.

It's not odd. Gays are humans, God's children, of course gays will participate in welcoming religious communities, and there are plenty.
How do you know same sex couples are not part of God's design.? We were not made to be clones, we are made to be unique and diverse. That is the beauty of God's work. God does not condemn same sex relationships any more than heterosexuality is condemned.

Hetero's are condemned throughout the Bible for sexual activities outside of committed relationships. Any youngster should feel shamed over any sexual activity. God didn't make man and woman and say "that's it, everyone be like this man and woman because they are too perfect to be any different." Perfection is in the diversity that God created in this world. Perhaps part of god's plan was to provide gays as parents to the 131k children seeking adoptive homes EVERY YEAR in the US alone.

The Greek word in Leviticus 18:22 is "arsenokoites." It refers to temple male to male prostitution. It was typical in the times of Jesus for men to go to temples and engage with prostitutes, including males. That is what this is talking about. Never mind the whole "picking & choosing" vs. argument, that verse in itself is completely misunderstood.
The Bible is a beautiful book. I recommend books by Karen Armstrong. She writes about the Bible, nothing about gays. You'll appreciate the Bible more
