My family (all not baptized yet) drove from Ont. to N.Y. I was 9 & it was a long drive in those days.. We had just bought an old Ford & on the way, it kept overheating, but we were determined to get there. I'll never forget the great crowd of people, the overflow into the Polo Grounds & tent kitchens where meals were prepared for everyone, shown at 3:38. I have never seen anything like it,but soon something far greater will surpass that wonderful assembly - God's New Sysem - I can't wait!!!"
WOW!!! My mom was baptized in 1968 and we were at Yankee Stadium in 1969 for the international. I was nine years old and even though I left the truth for many many years, I never forgot that experience. The seeds of truth my mom planted when I was young must have fallen on good soil because here at fifty years old I am once again serving Jehovah. What a fine video! thank yoy!
wow, all the progress we've made in the past 50 years is truley amazing. I always thought the kingdom melodies was the most beautiful music on earth. Everyday I wake up I have to remind myself that yeaterday makes today closer to the end of this system and how glad and happy the world will be. And finally Jehovah will be able to view the earth without sighing in sadness.
I was at that convention although I was very young(age 11)I remember everyone in their native dress, How happy everyone was.I remember the release of the "Paradise Lost to Paradise Regained ".The dirt ramps. I also found myself lost, how would I ever find them in a 165,000 people.A policeman on horseback saw me.and asked me my name,he said wait there. I feel to this day Jehovah helped us reunite.Age 11 I did not fear any harm from anyone there.
Jehovah never ceases to provide us with all the spiritual food we need and more... "Thank you" and our best in His service is the best we can do... "I laud you, O Jehovah my God, with all my heart, And I will glorify your name to time indefinite." -Psalms 86:12
This is FANTASTIC!! My dad was 12 at that '58convention. He was saying that on that last day since there were so many people, the brothers let the friends sit on the grass right on the field. He said it was as clear and sunny as could be that afternoon but as soon as the convention program was over, it started raining. By the time he got to the subway it was POURING. My uncle was a baby then and actually made front page news sleeping at my grandmothers feet! :)
"Jehovah's Witnesses pour in by the stadium full" reported New York's "Daily News"of July 26th, 1958. "Eight special trains, 500 chartered buses and 18,000 auto pools are bringing the members, besides two chartered ships and 65 chartered planes". Grew so fast after that we could never meet in one place again
The Polo Grounds were demolished on April 10, 1964 to make way for housing projects and Yankee Stadium lost it's classic look when it was renovated in 1975.
let alone being able to see the Convention this was truly awesome. Jehovah is truly good to us using todays technology to give us so much joy and blessings while we get spiritual food at the same time. Thank you brother for giving me this this wonder opportunity.
Being 4 years old at this convention allowed me to enjoy a number of vivid memories of our trip from Southern CA to N.J. to enjoy the whole program as a family of 4. I have the generous parents program and so many lovely recalled events of this trip and pictures. What a day it will be when we all will enjoy the promises spelled out by Brother Knorr in this heartwarming video. Thank you for posting it to allow more of the younger ones to also benefit from and to call back to mind our experiences.
Nice recomendation Natalie. It is chilling to hear the recording of that special event. As someone already comment, what a great sensation to be sorrounded for so many Jehova's servants. We will experience it at paradise also, won't we?
We just got back from our District Convention at the Cow Palace and there were about 7-8,000 people. I can't even imagine being around 253,922 people! That would be awesome. But my feet hurt SO bad after just three days. I dont know how they did it for eight days : )
I'm attending the last Cow Palace convention in San Francisco this coming weekend. It was a different world back in the '50s. We were first notified of this huge event in 1956 so there was plenty of time to prepare for it. The letdown was having to leave after spending 8 days in such a spiritual climate! Brother Knorr was an electric speaker but so was Brother Fred Franz and a number of others. The final songs sung under stadium lights at night along with a live orchestra were awesome indeed!
If only we could have a live orchestra! Wouldn't that be neat! It's always wonderful to spend days with all you're spiritual Brothers and Sisters. It's always so warming. There is nowhere else you can go and feel so comfortable and at home!
This is one of my earliest memories. I was 3+ years old. I don't remember anything about the program, but I have always remembered that guy holding up a Knickerbocher Beer in center field at the Polo grounds. The unique arrangment of the platform has always been a strong memory too. My mother had my brother and I in a harness and leash so that we would not get lost in the crowd. I have just attended my 53rd Convention. I am happy to say that I now get more out of the program.
