even with upgraded heads, the small bore of the 305 will never breathe like a larger bore motor. It is never cost effective to sink money into a 305.... a comparably built 350 will spank the smaller motor every time.
305s are great motors and i can't wait to build up the one in my wagon i want to keep it the original block. but i hear you can get as much power from a built 305 as a 350 and still get good gas mileage and hook up a 5 speed tranny there bullet proof
nice car. i just recently remove my quadrajet and i put in a 650 holley double pumper k&n intake moroso ignition wires and e3 spark plugs, let me tell u my 305 is runnin good but i would still have a 350 just to say that i have one. ill post a video on it soon watch it
i have a 1979 chevey camaro with a 305 small block and edelbrock intake and manafold and carberator and about a 1500 dollor hood scoop put about 700 horses
I dont care what anyone says 305's are great motors. some of the best most fun cars ive been in were 305's my daily driver is a 316k 305 with original valve cover gaskets!! and it is behind a 5sp 3.73 rear and it runs VERY STRONG. its in my 1991 c1500. I pull 10,000 lbs with that engine quite frequently. pulls over 22mpg and bump starts. just pulled a trailor with a buick on it through chicago 80-94 reaming it very hard and it ran wonderful. love my 305!!
Yes, this isn't numbers matching on parts but its the same block and i have all the original parts wrapped and saved. And Yes, it cost me something. More than a 350 would have but, its the same motor that came in my car in 1984 and its got over 400 hp.
This is a great 305! sounds and looks good! nice vid
Second, you can rebuild a 350 and get more for your buck. I honestly have nothing against people that go with 350. Its a great motor! But what about numbers matching? (the block mainly) That means something to me. I stroked my 305 to a 335. cam. jetted heads. High rise intake. 750 double pump. headers. k&n. switched to a true dual. Ripped off all smog control crap.
First, my 305 had over 200,000 miles on it and fired up the first crank. I went and built it because my freeze plugs rusted out. Almost every video i see on 305 is getting burned. They don't last? All these motors are from old cars! AND THEY ARE RUNNING! Yes, every type of motor has a lemon. Im not saying someone didnt have a bad experience with a 305 but making broad statements irritate me. I have proof that atleast one 305 is a durable motor sitting in my garage.
yea, prolly more power outa building a 350, but i know for a fact, ur gona run the shit outa a 350, and spin a crank bearing, sooner or later, but a 305, well u can run them bitches for ever, i had a friend with a 4.8L, i think thats a 486 or sumthin, and you cannot break those engines lol
you can get as much power as u want out of a 305 if u really want lol. ive seen little 305's lift the front wheels right off the ground in a TA. my buddy gotta good 560 horsepower out of his lol
My dad put in a 307 in a 79' camaro berlinetta. Do you have any suggestions on how to supe it UP??? I wanna take it to the max as far as horsepower goes...
Depending on whether it's a Z28 version or not its either 150 or 165 horsepower. This guy looks to have only an aggressive cam so I would imagine about 185. 200 would shock the crap out of me without a fair amount of work. In theory, maxed out you could see 270 to 366 depending on budget and tune.
i have a el camino with a 305..its not really worth all the work you just said! all of that cost LOTS of money. for that kinda money you can buy a 350. I dont mean a crate, i mean a standard 1/2 ton pick up truck replacement. They make around 260 hp for under 2000! Thats wat im planning on doing besides spending money on a boat anchor. 305s are not horrible, but they just dont have a lot of compression and thats the most important thing.
the older engines are making less the 90s series....i have a 305 from 93 thats rated 230 stock and ive put new intake, exhaust, throttle body spacer and headers with a jet ecu and its making just under 400
Yup. I have an 81 elcamino with a 305. The compression is a bit higher, there is a mild cam in it, with a jet perf. Q-jet, other than that it is stock. All stock manafolds, and y-pipe w single 2.5 in catted exhuast n straight through muffler. It get's good mpg, and hauls ass, revs like a son of a bitch. Of course my goodwrench 350 260/350tq th350 with a shift kit in my old elcamino was nasty as well. Chirpin the tires though all gears and on the freeway in drive. I love both motors.
The cam had been in the motor since I bought the vehicle a few years back. The motor ran so nice I decided to keep the 305, the cam is a mystery grind. All the parts on the motor internal and external are stock GM. I estimate power at around 300 with headers, less with the stock manafolds. I like Comp and Lunati camshafts, I would go with one of those companies. Good luck on your build.

I'd take a 350 over a 305 any day... 305's don't last if you beat on 'em.
lilAngus14 2 years ago
Because of weak mains and bottom end.
kpj200 2 years ago
r u a moron? weak mains, the mains in a 350 and a 305 are the same dumb ass. only thing is the bore retard
MarlinRyan 2 years ago
wrong
LetsWangChung 2 years ago
actually the bore is the same in a 350 and a 305 its the stroke that different.
beastbcrich 2 years ago
A 305 chevy has a bore of 3.736 inches and a stroke of 3.48 inches.
The 350 has a bore of 4.000 inches and a stroke of 3.48 inches.
Essentially they share the same crankshaft casting, except the 305 crank is balanced for the lighter pistons and rods.
You might be thinking of the Ford 351 and 302 which share the same 4.00 inch bore, different stroke and different deck height.

305 and 350s are the same blocks just different bores, same strokes. but me i would stick with a 305 high output.

Loose the 305 for a 350 or more...trust me it will put a smile on your face when you dump money into your 350 and find out the results.
