@SolidGold1980 Because took her feelings and used them to create this beautiful dance. Through dance, the thing he loved most, he acknowledged the emptiness of his endless sexual conquests, but lacked the desire to change. Even if the audience wouldn't know the whole story, she would. Every time she saw this number, it would remind her he chose cheap ass over her and their daughter.
@SolidGold1980 She's always thought that he had love affairs that meant nothing to him in the end. But with this she finds out that it wasn't even a pretended love for him, but only (mostly) lots a empty sex. And that it was just this sex that he hurt her for and was ultimately the cause of the end of their marriage.
@TheUntranslatable I think that SolidGold1980 was talking about the part at the very end after she tells him that its some of his best work, when she calls him "you son of a bitch".
@Jayjen35 I don't agree with the interpretation of @SolidGold1980. She's a dancer, he's a choreographer - they both share the same passion for dance. This dance is exceptional, it's brilliant - she says 'that's the best work you've ever done'. That's the reason for her reaction, not some symbolical patterns...
@TheUntranslatable He creates this piece after she confronts him about being a cheat - see the previous scene when he comes in to her rehearsal - and he uses her accusations against him as his inspiration - which is why he is a son of a bitch - he has broken her heart yet again.
@TamaraGorin55 :D The thing is that I still can't find where precisely does this dance spell 'cheat' :D It has nothing to do with her confronting him.
@TheUntranslatable it is the scene where she is practising and he comes in to look for consolation from her because he was struggling with this scene; she calls him out and he gets an aha! moment...which leads to this amazing scene, and particularly the second part of it, which has a direct relation to their conversation. Her reaction is stunningly understated and loving of him, his art, while her heart is clearly broken.
@TamaraGorin55 I think that you're generally regarding it as much more complex than it actually is. Anyway, I gave my view on the matter already (and I see that we've formed quite a discussion... :D). To conclude, it's a great song and an amazing dance :D Enjoy!
Even after all these years it is STILL the most beautiful modern dance pieces ever. It's like Erotic artwork in motion. Beautiful lines, and amazing what the human body can do.
@angstrid His name was Leland Schwantes---and HE decided he wanted to be called "Autumn" in the movie---we got to play ourselves but could use nicknames--GOT him noticed, though knowing him I THOUGHT IT WAS REALLY STRANGE! Gary
@dancinman17 - oh... it was Leland Schwantes - he looked so different in the dim lighting! no wonder i didn't hear his name being called. thks Gary :) - and a couple final questions if you don't mind: who's the female dancer in brown in the front @ 0:22 and the other female dancer in orange beside her @ 0:37? i haven't been able to figure out which of them is Eileen Casey or Candace Tovar. i've managed to figure out the remaining 11 in the ensemble fortunately. many thanks!
@dancinman17 -thks, Gary! wow... i finally had time to go through ALL of the comments posted on this video - just fascinating. thks @dancinman17 (Gary) and all the other contributors for their wonderful backstories and insight! i enjoyed them almost as much as this truly amazing dance sequence itself!
I was 20 when this movie was released and I absolutely adored it, even the startling surgery scenes, but especially this sizzling (and funny) dance sequence--made me wish I was a dancer! And I will never forget the Chicago audience's reactions to the male duet--a potent mix of discomfort, amusement, fascination and titillation (fairly typical for Midwestern audiences in 1979, I think).
Oh, I loved that movie, one of my favorites of all time! Roy Scheider was robbed of the Best Actor Oscar. It should have gone to either him or Peter Sellers in BEING THERE, not Dustin Hoffman for CRAMER. This dance sequence, beautifully choreographed and very sexy and daring for its time (1979) , is terrific!
I love the dancing in this movie, and the erotic scenes are so tastefully done... the way the lighting and the visual imagery is so beautifully coordinated. Gotta love it..one of my all-time favourite films.
Hey Gary i worked w Sandahl, Vicki, Cheryl in ACL and other things, and the story behind this (which i got from someone else there) is something that needs to be shared. Cheryl was a very good dancer, but basically Bob wanted to get his rocks off by seeing her topless. She told him to f off and Sandahl was more than willing to take her place. Sandahl & Cheryl had started out in the biz together back at KC starlight and were good friends. Cheryl was a pretty ballsy young broad to tell off Bob...
Bob, Great dirt! I always knew Bob wanted to see every female topless---bottomless as well//He ended up having a fling with the girl dancer Victoria (NOT a good dancer)--and she got her own scene in ATJ//Please get in touch--want to hear more of the story!
Ah, so! Life imitating art, eh? (Or in this case, perhaps, the other way around) Somehow, watching that movie, I kind of knew that... don't know why... *grins*
Glad they still have the WHOLE number up here//get the new orange copy of ATJ with over 2 hours of additional stuff (like more pics and clips of ME). Bob was a true genius and workaholic--and I LOVED every SECOND I got to spend with this artist! GARY (male adagio)// Bob's BULL
This is a great way to desribe the word "Art of human performance". A beautiful combination of the real soul of old Broadway and the new techniques of cirque du soleil. Beautiful, beautiful.
You know, the guy "Otto" dancing the second half of the dance, looks totally like the "gum-chewer" guy from "This is Spinal Tap!" Could this be him I wonder???
And how about Sandahl Bergman? AMAZING! I almost wish they'd let her keep her top on because I'm guessing some folks look more at her bosoms than on her amazing dance talent.
Also, who is the other guy, the one that is wearing that burnt orange shirt? He's really cute, and his dancing is quite interesting and impactful too!
I think he's John Sowinski ... a damn good dancer as he danced for ABT (American Ballet Theater) danced in many films like King of the Gypsies and still dances today. I think that's who you mean...don't quote me on it though...
Hi--I'M the other cute guy//Name is Gary Flannery, and John Sowinski was hired from ABT strictly to do the male adagio in this number// It's a shame that Bob ran all 3 adagios together, so you never got to see all the beautiful stuff we did//I still dance as well//Thanks for the IMPACTFUL--first time I've ever been called that! Bob's BULL
Gary...if it's really you in the male duet, congratulations, you look terrific in 1979, the dance is great, and I don't need to tell you that this sequence fuelled many a pre-teen fantasy of mine!
Who's the really cute guy, on the left? The one in the light red/purple shirt, who lifts his hat up? I really enjoy his attitude and how he dances in the piece!
No. And if you are refering to what I think you are refering to...it actually goes back to 1968 from the groundbreaking Zombie Film - Night of the Living Dead - of which Thriller director John Landis and Michael Jackson have always said inspired the music video. I am sure Fosse had that inspiration in mind here too.
Wow, this is one of the most amazing dance scenes ever committed to celluloid. It's incredibly erotic, but also heartbreakingly beautiful at the same time. It is highly erotic without ever being lewd and lascivious and pornographic.
Before seeing this film, I had respect for Roy Scheider as an actor, but this film made me see him as a truly sexy guy as well.
One question, I heard this was a take on Fosse's work on "Pippin'" and that he had issues with S. Schwartz. Can anyone confirm this?
There's a Fosse biography called "All His Jazz" by Martin Gottfried (that is still in print) and it confirms that there was a riff btw seasoned Fosse and newbie Schwartz. All That Jazz is a take on both Pippin and Chicago. (Gwen Verdon believed she could play the starring role of young Roxie Hart, and she got the part.)
@shaggycub this is actually a parallel to fosse's true life where he was editing "Lenny" while trying to stage "Chicago" at the same time...it's totally ironic how joe's life ended the same way Fosse left the earth
I think the film is genius; I love Roy Scheider more than almost any actor I can name; Fosse and his life were more than fascinating; and my wife was a professional dancer, teacher, and choreographer for years. However, I'm trying hard to figure out how this number isn't "lewd and lascivious" (and awfully close to pornographic, if not one foot completely over the line). I'm not a huge fan of that aspect of dance and theater, but I do understand its use in this film.
@shaggycub I don't know if it's true or not, but I have heard that the composer is meant to be a stand-in for Schwartz, and there is an orgy scene in Pippin, so...
Love the comments from cast members, 3 cheers for the internet age, and a standing O for Bob Fosse, love his work! My, he'd come a long way from his choreography in his "Kiss Me Kate" (From This Moment On) number by this time, LOL. I love ALL his epochs! For the person taking issue w/the quota of AA dancers-should they only hire whites for ballet then? Don't be silly!
Thanks Melanie--NOT WELL KNOWN is the fact that Ann Miller on a break from filming "Kate" happened by Bob and Carol Haney playing around in another room--and she secretly brought Hermes Pan (choreographer) by and then Hermes demanded that they put Bob's work in the film! Thanks ANN! Black-White----Let's all DANCE!
Thanks, love the story-dancers can be some of the most generous people on earth :) I love Hermes Pan, he worked with my all-time male dancer hero, the Great Fred Astaire--all-around great performer, and he made it look easy (which as anyone who is aware of his perfectionism knows, it wasn't) I agree, let's all just DANCE!
My college put on a production of Sweet Charity last year and vowed not to incorporate any of Bob's moves to make it original...they soon found it an impossible task. I can't think of any adaptation of Bob's work that succeeds in being original by avoiding Bob's choreography. It's unavoidable in my opinion.
Now that I have seen this scene on a larger screen, in dvd and again in the filmed version of "Fosse" I am so humbled that people have the talent and capacity to move like that, and when on stage, do it 8x week! I always think of the singers being overworked in a part like Mama Rose, but I think I had it backwards or at least was not giving full credit to all. Also, the anove conversations are almost as entertaining as the clip. Gary, Shamus....etc.....keep talking. I enjoy you!!
THANKS for the nicest comments on Bob's work that I have seen recently// People seem confused that what idiots COPY in Hollywood is the real thing! BOB FOSSE was the REAL thing!! I can be hired for master classes if you want to learn FOSSE from the source! Gary Flannery The DANCIN' MAN
Gotta love it! Everything in it is so way before it was meant to happen. Indeed, if it debuted today, it would be damned by the Focus on Family "people." I find it amazing. Homoeroticsm at its best.
Really Brilliant! I waited on line to see ATJ on its first day premiere back in '79 while still an impressionable teenager. Fosse really was a brilliant, talented bastard.
Thanks Dancin' Man (love your work...) for your commentary here. This dance sequence has gone on to inspire many a dance video w/o getting any credit except from the true Musical Theater fans of the world. Thanks so much for posting this classic bit of dance.
Me too! I think I was 4 or 5 years old. I loved the music and watched it many times. I think was 20 when I watched it and be able to fully appreciate the story. Fosse was an absolute artist and genius in directing and choreography.
Bruce Anthony Davis was hired by BOB for ATJ upon my recommendation--having seen him at my alma--Juilliard//He was a great dancer with a good voice and was packed with ENERGY!! He almost kept up with me--HaHa. We both rehearsed with Gwen and Kathryn Doby and went into the B'Way Co of DANCIN together. CHECK HIM OUT IN THE CLIP FROM '''BIG DEAL''' with another great dancer-Wayne Cilento//Happy New Year! Bob's BULL, Gary
Lead dancer is the IMMORTAL Sandhal Bergman, who wasn't who we started rehearsals with--LONG story, but Cheryl Clark who was Cassie (Chorus Line) on B'Way at the time was fired after she refused to disrobe for BOB one morning--Miss Bergman of the plastic (sorry) boobs was there that afternoon//GREAT performer, just got Hollywood weird! Bob's BULL, Gary
Wow and WOW--Even with the plastic she was quite an eyeful!! Naturally, I fell for her--but didn't have the right kind of money. She partied a little too heavy in Hollywood though and I heard she doesn't look quite so good of late--I did PIPPIN and DANCIN on B'way with her in the 1970's--she was VERY GOOD!!!!!! Bob's BUll, Gary
She has an amazing set of legs though, doesn't she? When I think of all the women Fosse had worked with, Reinking had wonderful legs as well and was a top notch dancer, but kudos for Sandahl for stepping up to the plate and running with it. If I'm not mistaken, she got the part in Conan because Milius saw her dance this number and was smitten. Not everyone can age very well though, but she seems like a class act.
Sandahl was always a class act! GREAT legs--and when she came into PIPPIN on B'Way she was flat as a board (maybe 1973?)--I went away on tour and came back to NYC and she was size 38/// Notice their LACK of movement in ATJ--VERY hard-and I got to hug her often!!//Happy New Year!, the Dancin' Man
I just noticed, Gary, if you are indeed the "Gary" from this production, you had an up close and personal view of those tits up on that platform. Real tits are affected by gravity, you know. Fake tits aside, it would be an awesome thing if most of you dancers could have a reunion of some kind. Are most of you still around these days? Not that it reflects on your age, but people disappear and people die.
Hey Shamus--YES-I indeed had a closeup of those plastic knockers--they STILL looked great--and notice while I'm up there I am also cranking open her legs--NOT A BAD JOB!! I partnered Sandahl in Dancin' on B'Way, so I got to feel that body! As I said-I was interested (straight)-but she turned me down--HER loss-haha//Reunion would only happen if QUEEN ANN would talk to Fosse vets--plus I have been trying for a FOSSE INSTITUTE for years/ no support! WHAT DO THEY DO WITH ALL BOB'S MONEY? BULL
I don't think Sandahl liked dancers in that way, Gary. She had an affair with her stuntman when she made Conan. I think she likes butch guys, not that I'm calling your masculinity into question, I've never met you. Shame that Ann has the authority, although Bob created her. Bob was a genius and had a lot of authority. He must've been surrounded by a lot of sycophants who despised him. BTW...that maneuver in the first part of the dance of where the dancer jumps while on his knees..OUCH. Kneepads!
GOOD kneepads on--I did that spin as well as a double tour landing on both knees that Bob wanted me to put in the Dancin' show, but I told him I coudn't do it 8 times a week--you actually land on your forward arches--then hit knees (with GOOD kneepads-Yes it still hurt//Gary at 60 ---still with GOOD knees! check out my George White's Scandals UTube video and website!!
dancinman17 , I saw Sandhal not that long ago and she still looked just fine. By mere coincidence we were both in the waiting room at the same time at an orthapedic doctor's office..both of us waiting to get our knees worked on. You know how dancing kills the knees.
HEY LASTGUY// Thanks for the update. I have adored Sandahl since day 1 in NYC Broadway production of PIPPIN//Glad to hear she looks good--but not good with the knees (Gotta keep up those soft-knee BALLET classes). Please tell her HELLO and you and she can look me up on facebook or something/ Regards, Gary
This film was on television the other day, dancinman, on the "Ovation" network. And wouldn't you know it, they VICIOUSLY cut the entire scene. The beginning of the number is sexually suggestive as hell, even before they disrobe, but when the moment finally came they cut it up pretty bad and zoomed in so as not to show Sandahl's tits. Sexual innuendo is ok, but showing titties isn't. Thank goodness Bob never lived to see this.
HOLLYWOOD!!?? THEY ARE STILL CLUELESS--ABOUT THE ONLY THING THAT IS HOT IS REALITY SHOWS! Too bad nobody sees any ART in film or television anymore!! Regards, Gary
Leland was a great talent--saw her originally in YOUR OWN THING--got to talk with her every day on the set of ATJ. Nice lady, and a true artist//I'd like to know where she is as well//Gary
BTW, my 2 year old triplet boys were mesmorized with this dance; you've never seen them so still and wide eyed (like I care they see naked breasts--they're 2 and see mine all the time!). ;) We jumped around the room dancing the rest of the day!!!
I'll grant you, there's only about two or three blacks in this. But why enforce quotas or politics on this? There are so many great examples of African-American dance - no serious student of the form would ever disregard them (or attack one over homoerotic overtones.) Why take away from Fosse's achievement with petty nitpicking and playing the race card?
This is the zenith of Bob Fosse's style, without doubt, and remains the red hot button topic of his autobiographical movie, "All That Jazz". Only ballet dancers can achieve this most iconiclastic of Jazz dance styles, much to the chagrin of those who still think it's not an art.
You're right, John, about this being the zenith of Fosse's style. But guess what? My brother, Leland Schwantes, "Autumn", who at first appears on the right in an open black shirt and cap, and later in the sequence is the dancer featured in the center with the sexy blonde, is a modern dancer! But then I believe that talent is talent!!! He still dances and teaches, AND has been a hand model for 30 years. Isn't he great? (grin)Look for him in Chita Rivera"s number "America and All That Jazz" too.
You brother's hot! No disrespect to modern dancers, been there and done lots of that. I was referring to Fosse's longtime love-hate relationship with ballet technique, which he struggled with for years before his dancers told him to shut up and make it work on his terms. Thank goodness, without his tight hips, we would not have the iconic parallel positions, pop gestures, and gyrations, that made his musicals so distinct from old broadway. Fosse gave us modern jazz.
Please tell your brother I was an usher in a theatre when this came out and envied him show after show then and still these 30 years later ...Sandahl Bergman too sweet. I usually find blondes invisible- but she is just gorgeous. I liked your brother _ I thought his one line was great and his smile was genuine- glad to hear he kept in the spotlight- my mistake was always looking for him and his great physique in a Hollywood production- I'm so one sided
Judy--HI// Gary Flannery here from ATJ. Tell our boy Leland I said a BIG hello. He and I were usually chasing after the same ladies in showbiz. GREAT guy, and I would love to chat. look me up on line or leave a message here for dancinman17// BOB was the best ever! from Bob's BULL
Well hi Gary! I will certainly tell Leland you said hi! So...you TOO were chasing ladies in showbiz?! LOL! And I thought it was just Leland. tsk tsk. You wouldn't know it now. He's married with two teen-age sons. His wife, Anne Conners is an actress/dancer, and the boys dance, (fantastically) and play football, soccer, and wrestle! Quite diverse! So great to hear from you. And YOU were great!!!
I fell in love with this movie a few years ago-just from this scene and the 'Bye-bye Love' scene alone. Watching this got me to go back into dancing again, and I now I think of Bob Fosse as my inspiration. Thank you so much for uploading this scene!
Hey ALL, Gary checking in from THIS movie//I'm the handsome guy doing the male adagio//Bob was the best ever--I should know as I worked with Jerome Robbins-Gower Champion and George Balanchine as well!! Take off with us was nicknamed AIROTICA--and the whole film was based on what Fosse was doing when he was stagin CHICAGO and the film LENNY/He was always a great joy to work with though a serious taskmaster/Love ya Bob and Roy
Gary, thank you so much for all the pleasure that you, the other dancers and Bob Fosse were able to give us. I agree with others that this dance sequence is the zenith of Fosse's style. Please feel free to share more of your memories of what it was like to work with Bob Fosse. Do you and the other dancers keep in touch?
This is probably the sexiest piece of musical theater ever. Fosse was a treasure. I'm glad that we have his wonderful movies to keep as a record of his genius forever.
Thank you for posting this brilliant number from a great film. It brings back great memories from yesteryear. I don't mean to be picky but the title actually is Take Off With Us.
p.s. Check out some of those dance moves ... they appear in videos of today, but were invented by Bob Fosse many years ago. We miss you Bob.
Thank you Bob Fosse!

Cheryl was a pretty ballsy young broad to tell off Bob...
bobfelcher 2 years ago
Bob, Great dirt! I always knew Bob wanted to see every female topless---bottomless as well//He ended up having a fling with the girl dancer Victoria (NOT a good dancer)--and she got her own scene in ATJ//Please get in touch--want to hear more of the story!

Ah, so! Life imitating art, eh? (Or in this case, perhaps, the other way around) Somehow, watching that movie, I kind of knew that... don't know why... *grins*

I love this number, but I am going to comment on Sandahl Bergman: her body is absolutely perfect.

You know, the guy "Otto" dancing the second half of the dance, looks totally like the "gum-chewer" guy from "This is Spinal Tap!" Could this be him I wonder???
Nah, but still he really does look like him.

Sindatra never DID record this, more's the pity!

Mandi7882 2 years ago
Hi--I'M the other cute guy//Name is Gary Flannery, and John Sowinski was hired from ABT strictly to do the male adagio in this number// It's a shame that Bob ran all 3 adagios together, so you never got to see all the beautiful stuff we did//I still dance as well//Thanks for the IMPACTFUL--first time I've ever been called that! take a look at 8:14 ...does it rmind you something (of thriller)?
SuperJackTorrance 2 years ago 2
Mandi7882 2 years ago
Wow, this is one of the most amazing dance scenes ever committed to celluloid. It's incredibly erotic, but also heartbreakingly beautiful at the same time. It is highly erotic without ever being lewd and lascivious and pornographic.
Before seeing this film, I had respect for Roy Scheider as an actor, but this film made me see him as a truly sexy guy as well.
One question, I heard this was a take on Fosse's work on "Pippin'" and that he had issues with S. Schwartz. Can anyone confirm this?
shaggycub 2 years ago 43
There's a Fosse biography called "All His Jazz" by Martin Gottfried (that is still in print) and it confirms that there was a riff btw seasoned Fosse and newbie Schwartz. All That Jazz is a take on both Pippin and Chicago. (Gwen Verdon believed she could play the starring role of young Roxie Hart, and she got the part.)
jellyrollnorton 2 years ago
@shaggycub this is actually a parallel to fosse's true life where he was editing "Lenny" while trying to stage "Chicago" at the same time...it's totally ironic how joe's life ended the same way Fosse left the earth
He was a true legend!!!
sweetlizzi728 9 months ago
@shaggycub
I'm not a huge fan of that aspect of dance and theater, but I do understand its use in this film.
emncaity 6 months ago
@shaggycub I don't know if it's true or not, but I have heard that the composer is meant to be a stand-in for Schwartz, and there is an orgy scene in Pippin, so...

Love the comments from cast members, 3 cheers for the internet age, and a standing O for Bob Fosse, love his work! My, he'd come a long way from his choreography in his "Kiss Me Kate" (From This Moment On) number by this time, LOL. I love ALL his epochs! For the person taking issue w/the quota of AA dancers-should they only hire whites for ballet then? Don't be silly!
MelanieAF 2 years ago 11
Thanks Melanie--NOT WELL KNOWN is the fact that Ann Miller on a break from filming "Kate" happened by Bob and Carol Haney playing around in another room--and she secretly brought Hermes Pan (choreographer) by and then Hermes demanded that they put Bob's work in the film! Thanks ANN! Black-White----Let's all DANCE!
dancinman17 2 years ago 24
Thanks, love the story-dancers can be some of the most generous people on earth :) I love Hermes Pan, he worked with my all-time male dancer hero, the Great Fred Astaire--all-around great performer, and he made it look easy (which as anyone who is aware of his perfectionism knows, it wasn't) I agree, let's all just DANCE!
MelanieAF 2 years ago 4

Who is the lead female dancer in the first part of the pitch?
Ironjohn1976 3 years ago
Lead dancer is the IMMORTAL Sandhal Bergman, who wasn't who we started rehearsals with--LONG story, but Cheryl Clark who was Cassie (Chorus Line) on B'Way at the time was fired after she refused to disrobe for BOB one morning--Miss Bergman of the plastic (sorry) boobs was there that afternoon//GREAT performer, just got Hollywood weird! Ironjohn1976 3 years ago
Bob's BUll, Gary
dancinman17 3 years ago
She has an amazing set of legs though, doesn't she? When I think of all the women Fosse had worked with, Reinking had wonderful legs as well and was a top notch dancer, but kudos for Sandahl for stepping up to the plate and running with it. If I'm not mistaken, she got the part in Conan because Milius saw her dance this number and was smitten. Not everyone can age very well though, but she seems like a class act.
ShamusMacGuffin 3 years ago
Sandahl was always a class act! GREAT legs--and when she came into PIPPIN on B'Way she was flat as a board (maybe 1973?)--I went away on tour and came back to NYC and she was size 38/// Notice their LACK of movement in ATJ--VERY hard-and I got to hug her often!!//Happy New Year!, the Dancin' Man
dancinman17 3 years ago
I just noticed, Gary, if you are indeed the "Gary" from this production, you had an up close and personal view of those tits up on that platform. Real tits are affected by gravity, you know. Fake tits aside, it would be an awesome thing if most of you dancers could have a reunion of some kind. Are most of you still around these days? Not that it reflects on your age, but people disappear and people die.
ShamusMacGuffin 3 years ago
BULL
dancinman17 3 years ago 3
I don't think Sandahl liked dancers in that way, Gary. She had an affair with her stuntman when she made Conan. I think she likes butch guys, not that I'm calling your masculinity into question, I've never met you. Shame that Ann has the authority, although Bob created her. Bob was a genius and had a lot of authority. He must've been surrounded by a lot of sycophants who despised him. BTW...that maneuver in the first part of the dance of where the dancer jumps while on his knees..OUCH. Kneepads!
ShamusMacGuffin 3 years ago
Just to reiterate, the jumping while on the knees maneuver that I mentions happens at 2:21...OUCH. Would've bruised my knee's for sure!
ShamusMacGuffin 3 years ago
GOOD kneepads on--I did that spin as well as a double tour landing on both knees that Bob wanted me to put in the Dancin' show, but I told him I coudn't do it 8 times a week--you actually land on your forward arches--then hit knees (with GOOD kneepads-Yes it still hurt//Gary at 60 ---still with GOOD knees! check out my George White's Scandals UTube video and website!!
dancinman17 3 years ago
dancinman17 , I saw Sandhal not that long ago and she still looked just fine. By mere coincidence we were both in the waiting room at the same time at an orthapedic doctor's office..both of us waiting to get our knees worked on. You know how dancing kills the knees.

Johnzane 3 years ago
You're right, John, about this being the zenith of Fosse's style. But guess what? My brother, Leland Schwantes, "Autumn", who at first appears on the right in an open black shirt and cap, and later in the sequence is the dancer featured in the center with the sexy blonde, is a modern dancer! But then I believe that talent is talent!!! He still dances and teaches, AND has been a hand model for 30 years. Isn't he great? (grin)Look for him in Chita Rivera"s number "America and All That Jazz" too.
judy800 3 years ago
You brother's hot! No disrespect to modern dancers, been there and done lots of that. I was referring to Fosse's longtime love-hate relationship with ballet technique, which he struggled with for years before his dancers told him to shut up and make it work on his terms. Thank goodness, without his tight hips, we would not have the iconic parallel positions, pop gestures, and gyrations, that made his musicals so distinct from old broadway. Fosse gave us modern jazz.
Johnzane 3 years ago
I worked with your brother and Chita many times in the 70's. I always had a great time when they came to town; you should be proud.
