  • when is this played? during the morning before reville or what? can someone tell me the order of which these calls are played and during what time?

  • @rewindablender First call, reveille, to the colors. Morning

  • @rewindablender at the end of the work day if u live in a millitary base usually round 1700

  • i love this song for i am a true patriot and hope that our government will stop what they are doing and give us all our rights back as AMERICAN citizens why cant i speak up or own a gun arent these my rights maybe im wrong :(

  • This gives me flashbacks to junior high. I'm not kidding. I don't recall if it was an actual bugler or a tape recorder, but we'd hear this tune, the flag would be raised in the quad, and we'd all stand at attention and face the quad, no matter where on school grounds we were, regardless of line of sight. It was a little bit of discipline in a place that needed it the most.

  • PLATOON......HALT

  • @rtm1137 Damn you, I'm getting flashbacks.

  • Work on a US Installation this is the one they play at 1700 hours daily before the National Anthem

  • @antman08015 they play this and not retreat? I'm based at Malmstrom AFB and this plays after reveille at 0700, retreat and the national anthem at 1630 and taps at 2200

  • @dandoosh90 Supposed to be retreat then to the colors @ 1700. Taps @ 2200 and Reveille @ 0700. I have never been anywhere that plays the star spangled banner during duty hours unless it is a ceremony. I have heard all the other bugle calls during ceremonies like change of command.

  • @ThegrumpySGT For most troops on base the day ends at 1630. For cops? Not so much. I'm at Malmstrom AFB

  • It used to be that, when I heard this, it was my husband snapping to attention while I scrambled around controlling our 2 dogs who didn't understand why their run had been disrupted. Now, I have them trained to "down" automatically when they hear it and they often hear it before we do and will "down" before we even know what's going on. I love hearing this.

  • @MrSock59 But its not the correct spelling and that has been proven through the oxford dictionary, the highest dictionary in the world. Color is the old english spelling, colours in the modern english. Its Australia by the way.

  • know where to find the noteS?

  • @chillyman95 lol its all open. such as all bugle calls.

  • @XYZslayer yeah i knoo all military songs are open but the the highest confuse me sometimes and im pretty new :p

  • Colours* Damn yanks.

  • @owen82100 maybe for you in what ever country your in but for the U.S.A. its colors

  • @owen82100 I don't speak English i speak American.

  • @owen82100 Nope.

  • Ah, memories of Boy's State.

  • "LIKE CRAP THROUGH A GOOSE"

    -George C. Scott

  • I love my cell phone!! I have recorded all of the Military calls and play 'em when needed. Every am for "COLORS", every pm 4 "RETREAT", When a Veterans come to the hide out I played their branch athem, alot of the partons stand and then we have fun and beer or 2!!! I get 'em real SNCO and I get choked!! :-0

  • they used to play this at the beginning of every boy scout meeting, as they caried the colors across the room, I never knew what the song was called.

  • When I was in the army we called this "Death Valley Days" because this song was used as the theme song for the TV show Death Valley Days. We did it mainly because it irritated the hell out of one Sargent who wanted us to call it by its proper name "Colors". But he could not do anything to make us do it.

What Sidthing says in the note above is correct. It was the precursor to the bugle call "

  • in a "battle" (say 17 to 1800's) "retreat" was sounded, then "to the colors" right after. Was just a pre radio way of saying, "fall back, regroup around your unit flags, and lets go at these bastards again"!

  • @Tankerc interesting. I didn't know thats why they were played in that order. They still follow one another today when played at the end of a work day on most military posts. You come to attention when you hear the beginning of "Retreat" and you present arms at the beginning of "to the colors".

  • i love hearing this call at flag lowering in camp its the best call

  • People talk about this playing at the end of the duty day, but this plays right after Reveille over here at Keesler AFB!

  • reminds me of growing up on base as a military brat and time seemed to stop everyday at 1700

  • @Rookie2033 You're right , time DID seem to stop when that was played over loudspeakers all over the post as they lowered the colors for the day . EVERBODY that was outdoors when that went off had to stop, come to attention facing the source of the music & salute till it was done . Even people in vehicles had to stop & un-ass their vehicles & do the same . Even if you were far off enough to where you could barely hear it , you could take your cue as to where to face , from people way off ......

  • @1959hogryder , I remember sometimes thinking what a pain in the ass it was to do exactly what you described. That was a different time - NOW, I would be happy to dismount and render respect.

  • Play "Retreat" by Moderatepopulist and then play this and you will have the military's retreat calls for the end of the work day and lowering of the colors; 17:00 (5PM).

  • Many people will remember this from the opening scene in the 1970 film "Patton"

  • Totally love this; I remember whistling it so much while downrange that the captain I was working with ordered me to stop.

I am not the sentimental kind of guy, but I'll never understand the jackasses who duck inside at 14:59 everyday to avoid it.

  • i love the idiotic melody kinda puts you in a good mood :)) no offence

  • Semper Paratus!

  • Thank you for all who serve in the armed forces for the freedom we take for granted. Without you America wouldn't be the land of the free, or the home of the brave.

  • When I here this I snap to attention, salute with pride and think of those who shed blood and sacrifice their lives for our country. What pisses me is when I see some Soldiers and civilians not respecting this that's when I chew their asses.

  • @bocachula73 chew my ass, you faggot cunt bitch nigger.

  • @Lassannn Woah, we got a real badass here.

  • @bocachula73 ~sniff

  • @bocachula73 HA!! Same here! it happens all the time! Except I can't chew anyone out... I'm just a junior enlisted. Not much authority to hold, especially when it's the NCO's that do it...

  • Order Arms!

  • @Orbit915 its present arms first then order arms.

  • I heard this at Fort Holibird, MD, Fort Bragg, N.C., Fort Ord, CA, Fort Carson, CO, Fort Lewis, WA. and still makes me proud to be an AMERICAN!!

  • COLORS COLORS COLORS

    OORAH and SEMPERFI

  • A bugle call to rally troops around the flag to defend it

  • This is the song that told me it's about time for chow on Sand Hill, Ft. Benning, GA. Home of the Infantry.

Reveille would basically start PT, (parade rest during...) To The Colors, (go to attention, salute) Retreat (drop salute, at ease)

  • *retreat*.....pause....*PRESENT ARMS!!!* lol

  • Every morning at Lincoln Northeast H.S. this was played by 4 buglers just before the class would recite the Pledge of Allegiance. It was a very stirring sound to be out in the hallway when they did this. They stood back-to-back in an intersection of hallways on 2nd floor. You could hear it in every classroom on all three floors.

  • As an MP I was in charge a good number of times raising and lowering the flag in front of Division Headquarters in Germany. They would play this over the loud speaker. Brings back memories.

  • very confusing - some places it says this is more often used to raise, others say to lower the flag?? all agree that it gets same respect as National Anthem. Wikipedia says it is often following the "Retreat" call, but an Army guy told me they do the National Anthem to lower a flag, not this?? What's right???? At my BSA camp as a kid, this was the lowering call only. I am soo confused.

  • @frodonic sounds just like the Army and Air Force do the same thing. In the morning, Reville will play and the flag will be raised while To the Colors is played. In the evening, Retreat will play and the flag will be lowered as the National Anthem plays to end the duty day.

  • @cryptor13 They also do it in boy scouts

  • very confusing - some places it says this is more often used to raise, others say to lower the flag?? all agree that it gets same respect as National Anthem. Wikipedia says it is often following the "Retreat" call, but an Army guy told me they do the National Anthem to lower a flag, not this?? What's right???? At my BSA camp as a kid, this was the lowering call only. I am soo confused.

  • @frodonic there is another call for retreat of the colors, traditionally this is for raising the colors only as it is a fast call.

  • very confusing - some places it says this is more often used to raise, others say to lower the flag?? all agree that it gets same respect as National Anthem. Wikipedia says it is often following the "Retreat" call, but an Army guy told me they do the National Anthem to lower a flag, not this?? What's right????

  • This is what's played when the flag's run up first thing in the morning, right? And it's followed right away by the Star-Spangled Banner, right?

  • I know my son serving in the Tenth Mountain Division currently at Fort Drum is proud to stand to this bugle call. His old man is proud also.

  • i get goosebumps every time i hear that call.

  • I played this @ my high school's c/o '96 graduation prior to the band playing the Star Spangled Banner. Afterwards, a Korean War vet came upto me and said that he got chills and goosebumps while I sounded off. I've never felt such honor!

  • hence the phrase ...these colors don't run

  • where can i get the notes for this please send me a message i play a baritone but im sure its all the same thx :D

  • Be loyal to your class MHS..............Don't forget our Mini Reunion July 17th...a few weeks from now!

  • OORAH! standing there every morning listening to morning colors really makes you remember why you signed that contract

  • oh ok i get it

  • Carry on

  • oh the navy memories

  • Comment removed

  • i only wish i could play this call on my trumpet that fast, i can play it slow "open valve" witch is a little higher, but sounds mightier, onthetrumpet but slower, only once without mistake or inprfection.fellow buglers and trumpet players that also play military calls respect and know that this is not an easy call. in fact it takesprobaly lots of extra practice, respect and love to master this call...

  • I remember as a child stopping our vehicle and getting out for this. Memories! Man, us Military Brats had a cool upbringing! Yeah it sucked moving all the time but we got to see the world! God Bless our Servicemen and Women.

  • While I was in the Corps, this was played every morning, when you heard it you stopped whatever you were doing faced in the direction of the music, if in uniform saluted, if in civies you stood at attention for the duration. If you noticed people not at attention you shout "Colors!" If you were driving and noticed that colors was happening you pulled over. We'd always tried to duck into buildings if we knew it was around that time. I'd give anything to go back to those days.

  • @sidthing fresh off boot you would WAIT for it...after a while you'd hide =P

  • @sidthing I used to run for cover too, even though in reality I loved saluting the Colors (you always tried to act like a Salt)

  • Most bases and posts have a recording of the national anthem. No real need for a band. We only have To the Colors play when they're feeling festive.

  • This played in the morning whenever there was a General Officer on base. We didn't have to salute until the National Anthem played, but we were expected to stand at parade rest.

  • attetion actually

  • Hooah

  • actually this is played @ 5 pm when they bring down the flag....."first call" or "reveille" is played @ 6 am

  • a slower version of this is played at evening colors

  • Always a great day when our flag comes up over this great nation of ours. Hooah

  • you mean Oorah semper fedelis

  • @Teboishes and you mean fidelis = true

or did you say "semper fe" at all your war reenactment meetings? no wonder they all laughed...

  • carry on..

  • this is very inspiring, as if it kind of unleashes something inside that says go for it. my deepest respect to all those brave servicemen defending our precious freedom and peace. my full solidarity from germany. U.S.A & EUROPE ALLIANCE.

  • *Salute*

  • They play this in the morning while they rise the flag before we all go to our thing for the day on my base

  • actually i do believe they sound colors before raising the the Honorable Flag of the United States of America

  • @MCPettyOfficer1 they do but i think only when there is a lack of people to play the National Anthem

  • Comment removed

  • I had the honor of playing this call for a Veterans' Day Retreat ceremony today.

This is generally played in place of our National Anthem when using a solo bugler as opposed to a full band (or recording.)

In most traditions and regulations, "To the Colors" is rendered the same customs/courtesies as our National Anthem, even though it's technically "just a bugle call."

  • sounds hard!

  • no this is when they raise the flag or when the people salute

  • isnt this retreat?

  • yes this is.

  • This is on Patton I believe

  • Where can I get a ringtone of this?

  • Outstanding!

  • also i was mistaken the Color Guard raised her in the morning to Colors and lowered her in the evening when the bugler played Retreat.

  • just to clarify before anyone flips about my comment: I ment no direspect to the Boy Scouts at all. I am simply stating that they really offer no military traning as the young marines and CAP would.

  • No worries I had not joinde the BSA for military training. I joined it so for once in my life I can get out of the house and get dirty and get cut by my knife and burned by the fire. That is how a young man is supposed to learn how to recognise that thats hot or thats sharp.

  • I learned that at home. I am pretty sure you dont need to join some organization to learn fires hot and knives pointy.

  • I second that... sounds like someone here is just trying to sound tough.

  • what do you think about Sea Cadets?

  • I personally don't have any units around me so I haven't been able to form an opinion about them but it probably is a good program.

  • I love it. I only wish there was a 105 going off first. This call takes me home.

  • Thank god for this song, it woke me up when the NavSta Everett began playing it during a nightmare of mine today lol.

  • I am a boy scout and at camp they played this every day when they raised the Flagin the morning and lowered her in the evening. I am going to join the marines when I can my uncle is a marine and I am looking forward to saluting to him in my dress blues.

  • you should join the young marines or the Civil Air Patrol. They teach you so much more about leadership and military ways than Boy Scouts could ever offer. "Be prepared!" Ok, hand me the fuckin' lighter instead of two sticks!

  • I'll look it up but I aint cursing till I get to basic.

  • yeah I is a Technical Sergeant up for my Master currently.

  • in CAP or Young Maries?

  • Civil Air Patrol

  • And this is "Morning Colors"

  • Thanks for posting all these bugle calls! To the Colors is my favorite.

  • This is my work song nowadays. I whistle "To the Colors" more than any other call

  • @jjsalmiya

always reminds me of the begining of the movie Patton

    ...

  • @jjsalmiya to the colors is my favorite too, because it means i get to go home for the day :)

  • @jjsalmiya I love Colors, too! Especially 0:13-0:18.

Let me guess, you were in the Boy Scouts? That's where I heard most of these bugle calls.

  • I keep expecting to hear "Carry On" like three seconds after the last note. lol

  • HOOAH!!!

  • I'm a bugler wooot brass power!!

  • lol i listen to this everyday.. im in the honor guard in korea so i actually do the flag details its pretty cool to watch actually id recommend trying to get to see it in person

  • "ATTENTION ON DECK"

  • I remember the last day i heard the song while being discharge. I told myself i would never forget this sound i hear in the morning. Never. Alpha Company, 2/60th Panthers, Fort Jackson.

  • Fuck yes. Never forget!

  • @icehorse1010 I still miss it and never will forget. Ever.

  • i miss hearin this every mornin on base. i loved an miss my uniform and saluting the flag when colors was goin on. oorah!!
