  • How did you ever afford these drums?!?! I managed to get myself a Mapex Saturn, and so far am more than satisfied with the kit!

  • your all retarded, no set of drums can be considered to sound better than others since everyone plays them in different ways... the best drums for you are the ones that suit your style and make the sounds you want to make...

  • wats the side snare

  • My drums are better than your's!!! no there not mine are better than yours, your an asshole obviously mine are the best , DW are rated no 1 in the world (say's who???) if this went on for 6 pages you would have the gist of this "debate"

  • And I always have those who say, "what about all the great drummers that endorse dw?" Well, just because they endorse them doesn't mean they record with them. Chad Smith endorses Pearl and records a lot with Gretsch and Ludwig drums. Lars Ulrich with Tama recorded some of their albums with Gretsch...the black album for example. Just use your ears and experience with different companies and base your decision on that...not what your favorite drummer supposedly plays.

  • I've said it before and I'm sayin' it again...DW drums are shit, especially as expensive as they are. They cost a ton of money and they mostly have a dead or flat sound compared to other high end drums made of maple. All of the hardware I've owned from dw is overly heavy and the chrome plating comes off very easily. I had the 9000 pedal and after a couple days the chrome chipped off the beater shaft, also, it's impossible to tension up really tight the way I prefer it. Overpriced/overrated.

  • Hmm no reference about being 38? Then i guess you truly do have no life, no?

They don't produce the same ply configuration, my point exactly, thats why i like the DW's more, if you weren't raging you would have an idea of what your talking about.

Also i would accuse you of trolling because all of your last comments on your channel are negative.

Yeah i did write a 3 part reply, sorry i couldn't fit everything into one with this character limit. But again your a 38 year old with no life. . .

  • thats just awesome

  • Pearl/Gretch/DW/Tama/Yamaha/Ludwig. What does it matter? If you prefer one over another,....fine. Drums are like cymbals. Everyone has their favorite.

  • i go to school with this dude and hes so sickkk on kit

  • OMG, they are all good. Its a matter of personal preference people.

  • everyone on youtube with a drum set 5000 +

    sucks at drums.

    like this tool

  • if his comments are true either he has a good job or mommy and daddy bought it for him

  • Hey since you've owned a lot of different kits, what are your top 5 in order??? Thanks

  • Why weren't you using the mics!?

  • awesome soloing

  • you can't messin' around with a pearl ref.

    it's pure sound :P

  • Yamaha is a great company, they are way too underrated. everyone thinks there drums suck just because they make motorcycles and alot of other stuff besides drums.

  • @drummer4life54 yamaha is a great drum company, but in some cases overpriced :)

  • Comment removed

  • guh, pearl reference - purple craze. i would give my left nut to have that kit. o.O

  • sick jam dude. those drums sound so sexy, especially those toms. good call on getting a reference set

  • Decent Kit if you can't get a DW Kit. I really don't see what the fuss is with these drums?

  • @5drum5 Then you've never played one! I would say there on par if not BETTER than DW drums. Do a little research on the Reference series and you'll see why.

Oh, and I have a DW kit aswell, so Im not biased at all...

  • @drumzbystevo yeah i agree. even if i can afford to buy dw id still buy a reference!

  • @drumzbystevo I wouldn't say they are on par with DWs, the Masterworks are, but not these in my opinion.

And yes i have played all three, just my opinion though.

  • @NUProductions4Music You have no idea what the fuck you're saying. First of all, the Masterworks series of drums have shells constructed to the buyers specs. You can choose the type of wood, and the ply configuration, whatever finish, etc. So Masterworks kits can sound very different from one another, depending on what the customer orders. A lot of people order Masterworks kits in Reference specs. Trying to compare Masterworks to DW is just plain stupid.

  • @nbryc Yeah i realize that, if you take the exact same specs of a Reference, and exact same specs of a DW (which match) i prefer DW, that's all i am saying, i said the Masterworks are on par as they are custom, as are DW's.

I have no idea what the fuck i am saying, i know exactly what i am saying, i also stated that it is my opinion. According to your profile you are 38? So you go around swearing at other people for stating their opinion. . . this is a 2 part reply btw.

  • @nbryc Also from what i see, you're a troll. You have people commenting on your channel calling you an asshole, the whole nine yards, after looking at your recent comment, i have came to the same conclusion, being an Internet tough guy at the supposed age of 38, or what ever it is, well, youtube knows you have accomplished wonders with yourself, i have going to assume you have no wife, family etc if you truly are 38, and if you aren't your probably a little bitch.

  • @nbryc I'm sorry i lied, this is a 3 part reply. You said people by the masterworks in the same specs as a reference, why is that?

You do realize that makes no sense, why not buy the reference? Unless the masterworks are better, which are on par with DW?

But, i guess you being a troll think your pretty tough, I am just going to assume you are a fat moron that should get on a treadmill.

But other then that go take more time out of your day to bash other people, wonder why that is. . .

  • @NUProductions4Music It makes perfect sense dipshit. The Reference series comes in a limited amount of finishes. If you want a Reference series in a finish they don't offer in the Reference, you can simply order a Masterworks in whatever finish you want with the Reference specs. It's funny that you would accuse me of trolling and talking shit when you go and write a three part reply full of shit talking. DW doesn't produce shells with the same ply configuration as the Reference. Get a clue.

  • @5drum5 lol this kit is better than DW.. just saying

  • @5drum5 DW kits are overratede and over priced. I have played multiple DW customs and pearl references and the pearls are louder more responsive and much more musical. These drums sing!!!!!

  • @xXxIFORSAKENxXx I've been gigging with DW kit since 1998 and it sounds great. Get the right heads for your style of drumming and learn how to tune and DW's great. I'm thinking of buying a reference kit for recording at my house and just using the DW's for live. I may even just get another DW. Good drums cost money. Buy cheap, and you'll get cheap shells and cheap hardware.

  • @5drum5 I've owned more Pearl kits than I could ever possibly recall, from the basic, entry-level EXR and ELX kits right up through a top-of-the-line 8 piece Reference Series kit (in #193 Purple Craze Lacquer, like seen in this vid) and I can say, without a doubt, that once you play a Ref Series kit, your opinion will change! Solid as a rock. (Research the Ref Series drums). I can't see what DW could POSSIBLY do to be any better than a Pearl Ref Series kit.

  • FINALLY! for someone your age i can honestly say you for the most part deserve this kit, your young, and great... ive seen alot better, but with you skill, if you keep practicing youll end up great, best of luck!

  • i like how u can see the mics, but he doesnt use them

  • I wasn't planning on using the video as anything. I just so happened to film me jamming around to check out my technique. It wasn't intended to be a solo or anything

  • i know i just would have like to hear a better quality sound.. i could pretty much oly hear snare and really crapy toms and reference toms are really good. plus i have $300 harmon kardon speakers so i know when something sounds bad.. ur playing is good but sound was horrible

  • oh my gosh! thats my dream kit right there, where the heck do you get the money? lol ;p

  • be my drummer...:D

  • why did you use the camera mic if you have the drum mic?

  • i honestly think yamaha makes some damn good drums. my bands drummer has a fucking huge yamaha stage custom with zildjan and sabian symbols, gibraltar(or however you spell it rack) with pacific drums snare and pearl pedals (two bass drums)...the bass drums are custom made too, theyre pretty long and tall so they sound pretty beast. i honsetly think that our kit kicks and tama kits ass that ive ever seen or heard

  • pearl is the best then comes yamaha and tama alonge with mapex and ludwig but the reference series is the best out of pearl so the reference series is the best in the world

  • i dont understand how u easily leave out Sonor, Gretsch, and DW...not to mention all the custom companies! You need to listen to a Sonor SQ2 kit

  • I agree completely. I would say Sonor and DW are easily some of the best drums out there. I have a Sonor Delite set as well and they are just so full and rich sounding. I've had DW's (and am currently shopping for another...) and they too are top notch.

  • @jp60476 gretsch sucks

  • @jp60476 I completely agree with this! I use Gretsch New Classic Ltd Edition Maple & Bubinga drums..

Personally, Gretsch compliments my sound perfectly.. I don't think I'd ever mess around with Pearl.

Although I'd love to give some custom drums & dw a go!

  • i agree with you on the references but everything dominates yamaha. and gretsch's are 2nd in the world. haha

  • Personally, I don't think you can compare companies. They all have their niches and they all do "their-thing" well. Pearl is like the Toyota or Honda...Versatile, practical, and pretty much value-baised, with the occasional NSX or S2000 thrown in there (Reference). Yamaha makes some of the best sounding drums in the world, and often the most recorded or requested for Live performance. Gretsch makes fantastic drums for jazz...etc. Its not Apples to Apples with drum companies...

  • since when? personally i don't think they should be ranked but DW is ranked no.1 in the world and you're completely forgetting all the custom drum manufacturers out there.. listen pearl is my personal favorite but don't make your opinions sounds like facts.

  • Well, everything in music is relative. What maybe the best sounding/looking/playing kit to you maybe be utter trash to someone else. It just so happens that Pearl put ALOT of time, science and money into the Reference kits, and I, like many others think its paid off. These drums look and feel great, are heavy duty and best of all, sound out of this world. These are in my schools studio right now and they record perfectly, with 3 year old heads!! (I'm working on that...)

  • Amen, brother. My dream kit, right there. You're a very lucky man.

  • @FrydPraduct very rich statement to make, i myself have a premier cabria kit and i am pretty satisfied with it...

  • this is really at the begining it reminds me of a solo neal peart would do

  • I can't lie-Neil was a huge influence on me when I started...style and solo wise!

  • thats good man its really goood hell of a kit too keep it up

  • you have crazy drum fills and crossovers im impressed.

  • Thanks man!

  • Is this the drum's natural sound?

  • Yes, no effects or reverb or compression were added. Keep in mind though it was recorded with a cheap digital camera and its internal mic (Very low quality)

  • what would everyone recomend tama or pearl?

  • i would recommend both. If you want a very good drumset which is affordable, go with a tama superstar hyperdrive. If you have a donkey that shits money i would recommend you a pearl masters / reference.

  • you can also just buy a cheap drumkit with good hoods, evans or, as mine, remo pinstripe, depends on what sound you want, and then just tune it the way you want ...

  • @777EZekiel A Tama Superstar Doesn't EVEN come close to a Pearl Ref Series kit my friend. A Yugo vs a Ferrari. 800.00 (Superstar) vs a 3000.00 Ref Series). Not even close. Have ya read up any on the Ref Series or, just voicing a factless/biased opinion? Have ya sat behind a Ref Series? Have ya ever played a Ref Series? I own one myself (an 8 piece) and I can tell ya: once you sit behind a Pearl Ref Series kit, nothing else matters! Certainly not a Tama Superstar. No offense but, it's not close.

  • @777EZekiel Sorry 777, I mis-read your post here. You are correct. Tama DOES make extremely fine kits as well. I just mis-read your post as bashing the Pearl Ref Series. I apologize. In fact, if looking at Tama and can't swing the high price tag of a StarClassic, take a look at the new Silverstar kits. For around 800.00 to 900.00 you cop an excellent drum kit. One thing tho 777: The Pearl Ref BLOWS the Masters Series out of the water. I own/owned both with the Ref the TOP Series hands down.

  • @Lisa4Me2 ;) np. To anwser some of you questions you posted in the fist response -> visit my channel 8)

  • @777EZekiel Or a tama starclassic bubinga kit those sound wicked!

  • pearl !

  • they're both good drums...but personally i would recomend Pearl...i have a Pearl Forum Series kit...if you've got the money and skill i'd go up to a Reference or even Masters...but if you want affordable, and really good drums...Forum is definitely a good buy

  • I think, if you have the ability, you should get yourself to a Guitar Center or other music shop or drum store and try some Tama and Pearl sets out that are you in your price range. And then, try out other brands! Your ears should be your main factor in your decision. Lots of companies make lots of great drums!

Personally, I tend to favor Pearl kits over Tamas.

  • pearrrrrrlllll!!!!!!!!!!!! there way more lasting sound nicer and the more expensve but once you get one youll understand

  • Good job, you are good enough to deserve an awesome kit, unlike some other clown I saw on this sight. Maybe it was the video mic, but did you tune your drums way up in pitch?

  • wow sounded awesome dude just out of curiosity what kind of snare is that its got a nice pop sound to it =)

  • Its a 6.5x13 Pearl Reference! Thanks man!

  • cool what kind of set do you recommend because i want to get rid of my yamaha DTXPRESS IV electric kit and buy a accoustic set

  • Gotcha- I have the DTXpress too and I love mine. Your question is too vague though...what kind of music do you play? How big of a kit do you want? Whats your budget? Will you be gigging or will it be staying home?

  • yes i will be gigging with my band,i like to play heavy metal, hard rock, death metal, stuff like that and my budget is from 1000-2000 dollars and id like a nice kit not too big though

  • Hm, I would say a Pearl Masters kit is right up your alley. You can probably find a nice used kit in perfect shape around 1000-1500 for a great kit, possibly with hardware/cymbals too. They have amazing tone, look amazing and are great road drums. I would say look into used BRX (birch kits) There great for hard rock/metal too.

  • alright man thanks really appreciate it and how long have you been playing?

  • Sure man...Good Luck getting a kit! I've been playing for...I think 7-9 years now...somewhere in there.

  • wow lol ive been playing for almost 3 years now and im not even that close to how good you are and thanks

  • I wish I had the Reference Series, all I have is the export9still nice drums) PEARL RULES!!!!!!!!!

  • Hey man, I had a set of Pearls for the longest time before I got this kit. It was my first "real" kit and I there hasn't been a time since I first started that I haven't owned a Pearl kit at one time or another! So yes, PEARL RULES!

  • Ooh, how much does a kit like that cost? I'm a huge fan of portnoy too

  • Alright thanks man.

  • that's the 13x6.5 reference snare correct? would you reccomend the 6.5x14 for hard rock? or do you have any experience with it?

  • It is- The 6.5x14 would be very ballsy and have tons of body. I've only played a Ref in that size once but it sounded amazing. I would certainly recommend it!

  • hey what was the china at like 1:22. it sounds good and i want one

  • The china on the left side of the screen I "ride" on for that part is a 14" Sabian HHXevoution Dave Weckl Mini-China. Its the loudest thing i own..I love it!!

The china I play right before 1:22 (out of shoot to the top right) is a 18" Sabian Signature John Blackwell Jr. China (discontinued) and that "pingg" sound right at 1:22 is a 12" Sabian Signature ICE Bell.

  • Ey man, great kit. What effect console do you have for those electric pads?

  • Thanks man-I'm using a Yamaha DTXpressIII brain to control the sounds. Thanks for the comments on my other video too!

  • I love u!! YOU INSPIRE ME!!!!!!

  • cool playin dude, like portnoy much?? lol

  • Could you tell? hahaha Absolutely..Huge fan.

  • u are very good

  • nice drumming there, good job man!

  • dude, where did you get the money to pay for that kit?

  • keep those pinkies on the sticks! Nice playing though.

  • it's fancy playing lol

  • Is that the 8",10",12",14",and 16" configuration?

  • Yes it is.

  • Sweet playing, and your kit looks awesome! I'm thinking about getting something similar, but in a different finish and with 14" and 16" rack toms instead of the floor toms :P

  • dude you are amazing and nice kit

  • Awesome drumming, beautiful kit and well tuned. Nice.

  • hey great video man!! hope u enjoy mine as well! made in 2007.. on my wonderful pearl reference!!

  • haha how many cymbals do u need?! u gotta agree thats a little stupid..

  • 22, and no, not at all. Each has its own purpose and I use them all; so no, not stupid.

  • i don't know if you remember but i spoke to you last year about pearl reference drums and you sed they were amazing so i may just get me a shimmer of oz coloured one oh yeeeeeeer!

  • Damn, finally someone who deserves a great kit. It really pisses me off when these spoiled, rich-ass noobs have awesome kits but can't play shit.

  • That's pretty damn groovy for "messin around"

    ;)

  • From audience point of view...will the Reference sound a lot better, if any, than a nicely tuned Export?

  • Hells yeah. Drop by a drum shop somewhere and compare. Reference drums wreck Export's day.

  • Well actually i disagree, if you tune an export right they can sound great tbh unless you're recording in a studio id get the export, save a lotta cash

  • Well, yeah, with good heads and with proper tuning, any set can sound good. The problem is that Exports have been discontinued, and I think the Forum series just sucks.

I also really love the Reference kit. That's just my opinion, which is what he asked for. A questions that asks what sounds better is always an opinionated question.

  • I have Exports myself and there is no way you will get the same sound out of the bass, unless you're an acoustics genius or a wizard. Those bass drums are one of a kind... The rest? Maybe, I'm no expert. Good skins well-tuned might do the job.

  • i would say the exports couldnt sound quite like that, all exports are is pearl having small companies make a kit and slapping a pearl sticker on it

  • No i'd disagree with you there, i have the last version of the export series before they were discontinued and i have to say that other than the export's snare the toms and the bass drum sound great even though its poplar wood and they've got bad heads... its all about the tuning

  • Shit preacious kit man , very clean druming , excellent job and fckng good sound

  • ...your so lucky dude, that's my dream set

  • Its mine too! :D

  • how much did that cost yea?

  • hey bro ive been checkin out ur vids and u got skill! so on to ur kit...ive been tryin to get my hands on one of these babys but cant find one....whered u get urs??? and how much did u pay for the 7 peice?

  • I ordered the entire kit from a local Pearl dealer. I originally bought just the 4 piece shell pack until I could afford the rest. The 4 piece was 3100 at the time and when adding on...the snare was 550, 8" tom was 499 and the 16" was..well alittle over 1100. Since then, the prices have dropped a bit...

  • So cool ^^ pearl on love :)

  • wat is mikrofo name??

  • lol buy the masters!

  • hey, great job. got a question. do you think it is worth saving all the way for a reference instead of buying a masters or vision? im lookin for a new set.

  • dont buy a vision if your looking for a high end. the masters kits are good, but the references are even better. i would save for the reference

  • awsome kit man :)

  • Why don't you use those mics?

  • Didn't think the video was going to be used for anything really, so I didn't bother hooking up all the recording gear...Should have though!

  • yea, for real, dude!!!

your playing looks really tight and clean! i would've liked to hear it a little better

    good job, bro

  • Duude, perfect kit, i love References...

  • How old are you? What im really asking is, how the FUCK did you afford a reference and those cymbals?

  • A lot of work-I'm a drum teacher so that helps pay for it. And this has been building for the last 4 or so years...And I'm 18.

  • what did u start with? a 5 piece or something? im starting with a for and going all the way to an 8 single bass

  • How much did all this cost dude??

  • Yo mad sick video.

  • Kick ass! Nicely done.

  • your 16" sounds like a roar

  • Yeah the thing is sicknasty. I'm thinking of getting a 18" or maybe even a 20" gong bass. I want something I can do 808 bass drops with! haha

  • hey man have you tired to order a ong bass from pearl? im having real trouble figuring out how to order one

  • Drum set is freaking HUGE!!! not as big as the rev's though :)

  • Or Portnoys for that matter!!

  • Great playing man :) Great Job! And the kit sounds awesome :P

  • That is the exact kit I want with the same finish!

    Sounds beautiful.

  • Very nice man. Fuckin' amazing kit what cymbals are you running from Sabian.

  • thanks man! Its my pride and joy, and its currently a lot bigger than it was in this video..I'll have to shoot a new one over the holiday.

My cymbal specs should be on my website in the description.

  • young man...great job that excerpt was comprehensible in form, technique, and diversity. Great selection of cymbals, great tuning and all around cool concept on the sole keep going there needs to be more unassuming drummers like yourself nice work

  • Thanks a lot! I really appreciate it!

  • hahaha

    commenting*

  • paiste please

  • ?? Sabian ??? :)

  • i was just sommenting on your cymbals would be a perfect kit if you used paiste generally a thinner cymbal the thinner ones have a higher, crystalish sound with less decay. your sabians are really heavy and hard to open up at least it sounds like that on the vid but its presonal preference i guess try paiste tho like a thin or power 2002 you wont be disapointed
  • I love 2oo2's, but there not for me in the genre and styles I play. The majority of my crashes are AAXplosions or HHXplosion's which are slightly thinner crashes and they open up very well.

  • stay with sabians .. they wont break that easily, and they sound naaaaiis^^

  • holy crap...just in general

  • Is that a good thing?

  • yeah, your playing and the set...both are great! :D

  • do u use remo or evans?!

  • looks like Evans according to the logo on toms

  • At the time of the video, Evans Clear EC2

  • i'm so jealous of ur kit. wish i had the dough for one like that. :(

  • god its expensive to be a drummer,

good thing i play guitar, meaning no 200 dollar cymbal plus the stand, plus carry your kit everywhere , only my guitar, amp head and cab pedal board and good to go

  • what are you talking about dude! "good thing i play guitar, maaaaahhh, i play a different intrument, im so cool." what is your point other than that nice equipment is costly?

  • dude you're fuckin stupid... bitchin about some other guys comment thats fuckin retarted!

  • YEAH HOLY SHIT

  • bitchin about "bitchin" another guys comment? Ha ha. chill out dude. im just bored like everyone els who leaves comments on youtube! fucking relax.

  • can u tell me wot type the china on your right hand side is. i like the sound

  • its a (now discontinued) sabian 18" signature John blackwell jr JIA china. Such a great cymbal.

  • cheers

  • dude...

How much did everything cost you?

  • are those clear EC2s on the toms? if they are how do they sound?

  • I have the EC2s and they sound great on my Pearl masters.

  • ur good

    awsome vid :)

  • YO Dude how you Tune Your reference. My sound shit, Have any tips n check my vid out.

Btw SIk SHIT ;) u got skillz!

  • Thanks man. I tune the toms pretty low i guess...equal tension top and bottom or bottom just a BIT tighter. Snare is pretty cranked and the kick is low with nothing inside. If you need mo' info, lemme know man

  • Thnx man :D ill Tune em all the same with a tension key i got! ill let u know how it goes :)

  • reference are the nicest sounding kits in the world, next to masterworks, depending on wood picks! i've never heard a bad sounding set, Must be your tuning, good-luck though man
