I'm hearing my dad, (in my head), bitching at me about being lazy and doing it this way. Hey, I'm on your side... but my dad has this thing in his head that if your not busting your balls, you're not doing it correctly and being lazy. Needless to say, I've rolled my eyes A LOT... at him over the years. (Still do).
@thelazycomic My Dad is the same way, but!! when he seen my lifter he did say to me, glad to see your working smarter, not harder, so I took his words of wisdom as his way of acceptance, take care
This makes no sense. That log has to be stored for seasoning. Are you telling me there are hundreds of these logs stored on the ground next to the furnace?
@Cotronixco no, not hundreds, a few dozen yea, seasoned? most of them, in Michigan the temp will drop way below zero, and the highes durning the mid winter may only be 9 degrees, its durning times like that I will feed the boiler larger logs, as long as they have a good bed of coals they burn fine, and for days too, that is why I like them, I use a tractor to line them up in front of the furnace, then role them by hand to the lifter thanks for watching keep warm ;-)
@Droprite I had a small 600 phi. Hyd. pump and a 3/4 hp. electric motor from a blower from a old gas furnace, then made a one gal. Reservoir, a couple pulleys one for the pump and one for the motor, and a fan belt... and for the last 6 years had no problem with it since thanks for asking
@MONNIEHOLT i see you live in monroe, im in petersburg, i grew up in monroe... i was wondering if i could stop by and get the measurements of your log lift, so i can fab one up???? my # is 734-652-0853-----RON
@woodscritter thank you for your wisdom, although my furnace is not a gasification furnace the larger pieces work best for me, if there round they role easy, if there not round, they get split, the split pieces help the biger ones get started, if their damp, it don't matter, they will soon be dry, I'm not a lazy guy but, I found out with this approach there is more time to do other things, not been around gasification furnaces but, if I had one smaller pieces would be a better way to go
@surfflyfish4striper My Central Boiler Dealer had one that was lifted by a hand crank, so I made one and added a Hydraulic Cylinder with a small electric pump as I'm writing this it is 12 degrees outside at 6:41 am. Around 5:00 am this morning I already had a log in the lifter and there was a good bed of coals, I should be good till tomorrow around dark. The log will still be there but it wouldn't make it through the night so I will add some wood then, larger pieces saves time loading
A question. I have a 6048. Been using it a month now. Heats 3 bldgs total SF 500sf. Only 2 are heated all the time and only one of those 24hrs... I have been using split hardwood, and I have to load it 2-3x a day. It won't make it thru the night (8 hrs). I set my therm at 185, used thermopex. Good insulation on all the dwellings. It burns the wood so fast, I end up with a foot of red hot coals. Should I be burning bigger pieces? Called CB told me to adjust damper. Any Advice? Thx!
@onmyway2heaven once you get a good bed of coals try to put larger logs in, the last 2 nights its got down to 9 degrees and 14 degrees, my boiler heats the house, hot water, then I have 3 more heat exchangers on two other pumps even though I never use one and the other one on occasion when the temp. get down below 28 degrees I got to plug them in, although the heat exchangers are covered up to help prevent heat lose, back to your ? Larger pieces will burn longer
@MONNIEHOLT Thanks, I put a big log on today, so far so good, looks like it is gonna work. now i want to get one of those log lifters! Thanks for the advice..
@onmyway2heaven Dont split the wood and burn green logs (hard and soft wood). I work for a tree service that has one and it heats his 4000 sq ft house with a 3 car attached garage( heated) hot water and a 70x50 shopall have in floor heat. The shop has two heat exchangers that run during the day for the mechanic and we fill it twice a day once at 8 and the next time at 5. about to hook a kiln to it this month so it may need a little more wood but best things in the world. Hope this helps.

WOW!!!! Now that's what you call putting a log on the fire! I just installed a 6048 and am on my second day of wood heating! Wish I got one 10. Years ago. Gonna take your advise about loading at night. Thanks for sharing.
I live on a 1.3 acre lot, with about one acre to half an acre between my house and any other houses, and a very thing tree line. Would the smoke off this thing be a problem then? I've read a lot about people complaining about smoke.
@chrisd234 Hi, go to this website (centralboiler) then click on "here what E-Classic Owners Have To Say" watch the video, when I bought mine 6 years ago the E-Classic was not Available yet... that is the one I would get today, in your case it would be neighbor friendly, the new E-Classic is top notch, outdoor wood gasification furnaces are the way to go, hope this helps
I live next door to one of these. Right now the air is so thick with smoke it's unbelievable. There are a half dozen within a mile of our house and they all smoke like crazy. If my gas heater smoked like that I'd get a fixit ticket. What gives?
@EdAsthma Sorry to here about the conditions you are living with, I have neighbors around too and I am concerned about the air quality for them and myself, after 6 years I've learned to pay attention to the wind direction and the barometer pressure, plus I try to only load after 10:00 pm. most boilers will smoke more during the first 2 or 3 times the damper open, after you load them, after that there not bad, so by morning and all day long the smoke is not bad. Talk to your neighbors, share this
@jrccdhetlr1 There is no definite answer, this day it was high of 9°, only got two days, on days where its around 30°, low around 20° a oak log will last 3 but not quite 4 days, my house is medium size and well insulated, I used top quality underground insulated piping, everyones situation is different, no matter which boiler one chooses, load time is determine on the size house, how well its insulated, outside temp, quality wood, and if more than one building is heated. thanks
Chuck Norris could lift that log.

One big problem with this approach- it's impossible to get wood moisture down with large unsplit rounds.
If this is a gasifier, moisture makes it really difficult to get secondaries burning.
Blunderbuss approach to rifle target.
