I was a big connors fan in the 70/80s, but after reading the agassi/mcenroe/scanlon books, I can understand why many players disliked him so much. mcenroe and scanlon paint connors as a likeable rouge who would take any possible advantage. agassi plainly thought connors was a manipulative bully, who had no class whatsoever, agassi is quite frank in his dislike of connors, which I thought was very honest of him. I think if mac was writing his book now, he would,nt be as generous towards jimmy.
Yes when J Connors walked on court - even on a bad day - the pace became faster and the atmosphere electric. He was like an uncaged lion and his playing was daring as he skimmed the ball so low over the net. A top return of serve.
Watching Mac off the baseline is so amazing... that rally at 1:00 and is so cool....it's like he's creating every stroke as it happens and you really feel the artistry.
It's not like anyone else except Nasty or Edberg or Mecir on the men, Novatna Mandlikova Navratilova on the wimminz.
That was a great time. You had Jimmy, Mac, Borg, Nastase, Vitas, Vilas. Never happen again in our lifetime !! Every one a character, all wanted to be number one. Read the Johnny Mac book "You Cannot be Serious", an awesome book you can't put down !!
they should have kept their shirts. who would have guessed those would still be in style a quarter of a century later? :)
