  • I'm convinced that the down the bridge bit to the traffic lights towards the end is on the Hanworth Road in Hounslow!

  • Betchya LOL

  • This takes me right back to my childhood, especially the shirts.

  • thats peter noon not chegger

  • I bet he sold the bike and spent it on booze.

  • @enfieldlock Puts me in mind of the classic Viz letterbocks article "Cheggars Can't be Boozers"

  • I wish I could go back to 1971 and tell Cheggers not to do Naked Jungle so I would not be mentally scarred for life.

  • i have an incredible urge to beat the shite out of all these kids

  • The bike butch has is a "mobo cross 2000".Price new in 1971-£37.95.

  • I'm glad I was a kid then.

  • the opening music is class...

  • I wonder did Cheggers use the Swaporama to exchange his prize for some...errr...Jack Daniels?

  • Fantastic clip. That's a How and Why Wonder Book he's reading. Sigh... lost childhood... etc. etc.

Does anyone actually make British films for British kids anymore? Or are they just doomed to suffer apalling US imports all the time?

  • "I know 'e's a singer, ya nit!"

Man, this takes me back! coming home from Sutherland Primary and watching these, which of course would have even been repeats even then!

    Thanks for the upload!

  • Butch grew up to be a gay male escort, Lil was killed by her husband in 1998, and John was the husband.

  • @pbmax

  • awsome soundtrack. i totally want a copy if it. im serious too!!!!!!!!!

  • Not a CCTV camera anywhere!

  • what is it means? "betcher" !!!!!!!!

  • 'betcher' means 'i bet you; i bet ya', like 'Gotcha' for 'Got You'

  • Ahh the old cycling proficency test.

About the only thing i ever did pass in me life

  • Do you know where this was filmed? Some of the buildings look very like Hayes, Middlesex where I lived in the sixties.

  • It was all filmed in ealing I know this because I was the guy in the blue top in the film. It took can you believe 3 weeks to shoot.

  • Hayes? Ealing? Considering I left the area in 1965, aged eight, I was pretty close eh? Are you still in touch woth Keith Chefwin?

  • Not really I actually worked with him twice the followingyear I was in a disaster of a west end show called Tom Brown's Schooldays. After that I saw him once at a party he preteneded he did not know me....

  • cheggers wouldn't remember you from this anyway, cos it's not him! it's peter noone from herman's hermits.

  • of course it's cheggers! he's 'john' - the younger kid with the bike. peter noone is the older kid who judges

  • my mistake- i'll have another look.

    cheers!

  • not so sure how you could have made that mistake I am sure keith would be so upset. lol

  • i see what you mean, it's a mistake very much in keith's favour!

    (don't tell peter for chrissake!)

  • As I recall peter noon was a bit of a knob anyway, and years later when I met Keth again he pretened he did not know me.... what can I say.

  • they``re lucky you had anything to do with em in the first place! miserable pair o gets!

(they showed this film at my school prob coupl years after it was made- in the good old days when they showed films on projectors and such like)

  • I did not see it untill it came on here I was so shocked. Even when it was made I did not see it

  • wow! it must be a mind-blower to see something you did for the first time in 38 years! good memories? (apart from the nob-like tendencies of mr noone?)

  • Cheggers is the little boy you hoon.

  • i kno that now! twyborn29 told me (see below)

  • Didn't see that. I would have kept my trap shut, had I.

Sorry I called you a 'hoon', btw - (I'm not even sure what it means, actually ;)

  • that's alright!

i assume "hoon" is a mild insult named after a tory politician.

now if you'd called me a "gummer" or a "lamont", that would've been fighting talk!

  • How do you do this? I thought there was a maximum length of film on YouTube of ten minutes!

  • 10 mins 59 secs actually

  • Yea, I workef that out since. They should be more honest!

  • Great music.

  • Great short movie.

  • Good old Cheggers.

  • Is that Chegwin or Robin Asquith?

  • wonder where this was filmed?

  • in ealing

  • What about the bloody head gear?

  • betcher wish your boyfriend was hot like cheggers

  • That was the prize? wow gay bike.

  • Gay Bike? No that was a fully pimped up racer with drops, pump, bell, mudflaps plus full-option drinks bottle and extra lights. Hell of a good prize for riding round the block once i reckon!

  • amazing.Not a drug dealer in sight!

  • Yeah, incredible how we had fun despite not much money etc.

  • Yeah but Butch had a Chopper so for me wins hands down!!!

  • The best part of this is the opening and closing theme in 6/8 time with the cheesy sounding organ. Sounds like test pattern music.

  • Blimey - it's only 1971 but it seems like another world.

  • true true...

  • WOW John is Cheggers! OMG!!!

  • That opening music was used in 1978's 'Dawn Of The Dead' in the shopping mall, lol! Quality kitsch!

  • hehe, this was when kids would sooner have good old fashioned clean fun, these days they would sooner knife each other

  • just look at hes scopter

  • oooopss- I wasn't meant to send that!!!!!

  • "Come on John, come on John" - wasn't that Peter Firth???

  • The bike Bulch is on is worth some big bucks now. Wish I still had mine.

  • I'm not sure what was more hysterical Noone or the wiggy cat chaufering him around in a Mini Moke!

  • I'd say Noone's too tight shirt with his nipples showing is the funniest.

  • How to be a winner and a loser all at the same time.

  • Peter Noone really showed road safety by leaping out the car before it came to a stop at the end of the film, no points for Noone, the wanker.

  • amazinggg

  • what! no raliegh choppers!

  • I can't belive I sat and watched all of that, it wasn't too bad surprisingly!

  • is that a young keith chegwin i spy

  • Fun!

I'm afraid I pedal more from the Butch school.

  • LOL what a cute little film, Butch is a bit of a prick! I agree with "Retunerman" could we have more films like this? please? thanks BFI.

  • Was I the only one rooting for the other guy? Great film, though.

  • Fantastic. I just knew that Peter Noone would use this to promote 'Betcha Life I Do' when I saw the title of the film. Great to see this. Could we have more like this please?
