@donquixote2u If Marty was the first to record it then I recon that would make it the original version. Many composers never perform their own work so the first recording or performance must be the original!
@DasHearach I agree, but everything I have read says that Marty's version was a cover of Gordons song (they came out in the same year, 1965), not a song written specifically for Marty.
Now if you had said that Marty's version was the better known of the two, that might be true, but original - nope.
Marty had plenty of great songs of his own, so theres no shame in doing a good cover, and while some covers are better than the original, I prefer Gordy's version anyway, thanks!
Fans of Gordon Lightfoot should go to lightfoot.ca It is a great site for this fabulous performer. I love all his music but I think Don Qixote is the best. Ribbon of Darkness is second which has been covered by 29 other artists including Connie Smith. The only song that Gordon didn't write that he sings, of any note, is Me and Bobby McGee (by KKrisofferson) since the 1970s.
@allendale18 Try listening to G.L version of `The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. It is fabulous and takes the song to a level that only Gordon could have done.
@musiclover3x Yes, The First Time is great but he first recorded that in 1966 and it has been on many of his albums since but I can't think of anything since 1970 other than Me and Bobby McGee. Anyway we both agree he is pretty special.
I remember when this album was new - still have a copy. So many fine songs. Early Morning Rain, Steel Rail Blues, Long River, The Way I Feel and others.
@fogologo100 SORRY, BUT GORDON LIGHTFOOT DID INDEED WRITE RIBBON OF DARKNESS. MARTY ROBBINS RECORDED IT IN 1965 AND IT MADE IT TO #1 ON THE BILLBOARD CHARTS.
This is a country song written by a guy who never tried to be a country singer. Notice the singing. it's pure and naturally not full of the stylized affectations of country singers such as Garth Brooks, Sing like this and you will be a good singer
you might want to check .. i think Marty Robbins wrote this song way back ..

This song sounds good by anyone. The Pozo Seco Singers likely had the best one.
