  • that must be the brown note, lol.

  • This is fantastic, excellent music, and I've just heard of Sunn o))). I'm also a sober professionally trained musician in classical and jazz.

  • That's because I am pretty stoned...

    Although, I'm quite coherent.

  • I bet their drummer is taking a nap.

  • @7evenslinger They dont have a drummer lol its all strings, unless you have listened to the handfull where they had someone come in for them.

  • dear horsedoctorman,

    way to hate everyone.

no seriously, you are so metal. And i love sunn 0))) a lot. But this doesnt sound too much like orthodox caveman.

    try again.

but keep being metal, and hating stoners, and incoherency.

cause those things just aren't metal

  • @HappyTigerz nah i hate metal too, try again

if you "love" sunn o))) you'd know they don't usually play individual album tracks live - it's all one continuous performance. this part in the video eventually led into the orthodox caveman riff, so i thought it was an appropriate title. also, suck my ass.

  • BOOOOOAHHHHHHHHrrrrrrrrrrroooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHrrrrOOOO

    sighhhh got to love it.

  • Best video description EVAAR!

  • I listen to this video almost every day when dubstep gets annoying.

  • I just played this along with Kraftwerk's Musique Non-Stop at the same time. A mind-scramble!

  • realy dark!

it sounds even better live amazing conceptual live performance

  • this isn't music and this ain't a band

it's 5 middle fingers on a motherfucking hand

    :) happy daze

  • its fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffooking ssssssssssssssssssssssshite

  • ive been listening to sunn O))) (mainly DØmkirke, M&D, BO, grimrobe) about every day for a year straight, and i still have not played them to death. if anything, i only like them more and more. i just can not get over how fucking HUGE their sound is.

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRTS

  • I read the info and was satisfied. Sunn 0))) is brilliant and original. Didn't watch the video because I don't need to.

  • LOL! Horsedoctorman, your points are right on the dot. I'm glad that at least you get what Sunn0))) is really about. Seems like too many people just write them off way too quick. Oh well, 265 vs. 90 isn't bad for liking your video.

  • I like the part when BWOOOOOOOM

  • I think that music should be listened to only Live... It's a fuckin' sound's Tsunami !

  • So, horsedoctorman, I read your notes and understand that my only option is to praise this.

  • @tsoplika You do not understand. I am sorry you do not understand, but it is not my role to teach English to everyone on Youtube

  • @horsedoctorman indeed, I am a bit slow in the head, so thank you for spending your time answering to me.

Anyway, I find sunn o))) interesting, I believe that they have done many better things than this. This is more like an exercise, a 2 minute experiment. Many bands do them and so do they. Some people like it, some don't. In the end it's not really that important anyway.

  • @tsoplika It is a 2 minute experiment for me, not for Sunn o))). The entire performance lasted over an hour; I switched my camera on and pointed it at the stage at various intervals. So this is only an excerpt from a larger whole. If you are interested, watch my other Sunn o))) clips to get a broader impression of the performance.

  • @horsedoctorman, from what show\date\location is this taken from?

  • @CyberpunkVideodrome Bristol Thekla February 2006. The venue is actually a boat

  • Mr OMalley is the God of Statik, the demon lurking in the feedback... This is Monstruous and I love it!

  • This isn't country music,

hate to break it to you guys.

  • @ballersack you ain't no patsy cline neither

  • it's all about tone you boneheads. a youtube video isn't going to help. even a cd on a good stereo is a mere facsimile. Sunn 0))) rattles your bones, making you crap yourself a little. man, youtube is depressing. oh and thanks horsedoctorman for posting this, and for the description. you got it right.

    -douchebag out.

  • If you play more than one Sunn O))) video on youtube, you get some really interesting soundscapes; they usually match up almost perfectly.

  • They're too much technical for me, I'd rather kids songs!

  • @chopsuey187 It's nice that you try to speak English but that was incomprehensible, sorry

  • @horsedoctorman Teach me, then. I suppose that with such a modest teacher I'll learn a lot, indeed. I'll try to solve my "total inability" to express myself in a fluent english, but I have a little suggestion for you: try to find a solution for your hysteria.

  • @chopsuey187 That's a lot better, I could follow everything you were saying up until the very last word. FYI hysteria in English means a psychoneurotic disorder characterized by violent emotional outbreaks, disturbances of sensory and motor functions, and various abnormal effects due to autosuggestion.

  • @horsedoctorman I'm sure you could, and I guess that as well as you act as a Grammar Nazi, you also lack in irony.

If you can't stand that I said that Sunn O)))'s music is very technical, you probably couldn't discern between my joke and a serious statement; to me, there's nothing that could be defined as technical in one note played in a loop, which I like, however.

Try to be more useful than you are now: when you tell people they're wrong, also tell them why. That would be laudable.

  • @chopsuey187 Too long didn't read. If you want to believe I was acting as a "Grammar Nazi" go right ahead... in reality, I responded because I had no clue what you were saying.

  • @horsedoctorman come on people, stop fighting, we're on the internet (grammar nazi : lol) FUK GRAMAR TABARNAK DE CALICE

  • @titegueule thanks, i forgot that quebec has the lamest swear words in the world

  • @horsedoctorman thanks, i forgot that horses can't be doctors... god damn wannabe-human horses! And if I were you, i'd be careful cause this morning I ate Nutella on toast, and right now i'm eating fettucine alfredo and saucages with tomato sauce, so beware, this is food that you just can't mess with when you feel like it, it is a discipline. The ancients call it "food of the old-world gods". Because of the small hieroglyphs found on noodles and meat, the sauce is believed to embody great power.

  • @horsedoctorman (part 2) Legends say that if you are hungry and eat until you're full, you won't be hungry anymore. Science still has trouble solving this riddle. Does this food interact with our hunger directly? Or is this a mere coincidence? John Mays is a guy we met in the streets when we were looking for professionals to interview and he says he thinks this specific food has an influence on our hunger when we consume it. Since we thought he seemed kind of professional, we believed him.

  • @titegueule ok good

  • i'm trying to get into sunn 0))) at the moment. i see the direction they're taking but at the first sign of the slightlist hint of criticism someone gives them the diehard fans shower back abuse and 'artistic differences' reasoning - can't someone have a negative opinion on some of their work? or will we be lambasted for 'not getting it' ? Surely some of the tracks are a bit poor? or repetative?

  • @reactionskate are you going to give an opinion or aren't you mr fence-sitter

  • I don't see Sunn as music, to me it is a specific state of mind forged into sounds. When I listen to it I quickly forget about what I hear since i find myself in a specific way of thinking to explore, like a sandbox computer game. No pun intended, no drugs used, it works for me especially when I get annoyed by something at work. Especially with orthodox caveman and it took the night to believe.

  • yeeeeeeeessssssssssss i love toking on the bong big time then mongin out to sunn. fucking awesome, wicked ting.

  • I'd like to see these guys interpret a Phill Niblock piece. Really crazy and wild stuff! Peace.

  • This is pure fuckin' noise and I love it. Nothing more to say.

  • Cool sound - if you like vintage Orange and Sunn amps, droning riffs, plus creepy sounds - check out MONKEYS off ODE TO A ROADKILL on the tube

  • i was unfortunate enough to discover this band only after i stopped smoking weed, but i think after my anxiety probs go away, im gonna sit down, and light up a giant joint and listen to this stuff again while completly baked outta my gord

  • All hail the drone gods!!!

  • I walked into the kitchen, and heard my steroe was on and playing Sunn O)))

Further into examination, it turned out to be my refrigerator. I need a new one.

  • Not stoned, not incoherent. I love everything about Sunn O))), and this short excerpt pretty much sums up why: it's incredibly heavy music boiled down to its essence, pure riffing without any pretense of being anything else or attempting mass appeal. Well, except music as an artistic movement, but that's an entirely different story.

If one wants to question their talent, they can put that to bed by listening to "Alice" from Monoliths & Dimensions. Truly incredible.

    Thanks for posting this!

  • @rwoodsmall you're welcome, thank you for not being an idiot

  • I liked the vacuum cleaner sound since i was a child.

I found sunn, then my taste for noisy appliances made sense.

  • to all the people who insult this. some people like it. we don't know why we like it, we just do. so kindly shut up.

  • @nuclearRabbit123 I LOVE YOU.

  • This type of music is like contemporary art; really really awful but people think its good because it is different from everything else. It is continuous boring sound, not music. If it is so called 'ambient' music and is meant to create a feeling then it has done that: the feeling that i have wasted 2 minutes of my life.

  • @glint20 Who are you to say what music is and is not? Where do you get that kind of arrogance from?

  • @glint20 yeah what a ridiculous thing to say. that noise you call boring happens to be one of the most pleasing sounds I've ever heard. I know several people who would agree. It actually takes quite a bit of effort to create the sound that you're hearing, most likely a lot more than anything you would consider great, I'm sure. and as for your wasted two minutes, I would suggest skipping the comment section next time. you've only just wasted more time

  • The poster of this video is a total jerk. I'd hate to know him IRL.

  • @floppylunch I can only apologize for my sense of humour going completely over your head

  • so they dont play any actual songs?

  • hujahheigejahheigejahhüllä-hüllä-rAAAAAAH!!!

    awesome lyrics!!!

  • Nothing is happening!!!! They're not doing anything!!!

  • I wonder how many years will I have to wait before they come here. To Finland :/

I NEED to see them live.

  • Not the same feeling recorded. You HAVE to see them live if you want to experience why people love them.

Your whole body trembles, there's feelings of euphoria washing over your body, the foundations of the building feel like they're falling apart....

  • Awesome, could listen all night!

  • When and where was this?? Must have been an awesome show!!

  • @pdude1911 If Youtube's layout wasn't so hopelessly shit, it would tell you the date and venue as I remember putting in this detail at the time. Anyway, I know for certain it was at the Bristol Thekla (which is a club on a boat) but couldn't tell you what year, sometime after Black One came out

  • @horsedoctorman I keep getting references to these guys and I never realized how good they were, kind of "Whitehouse" without the baggage.

  • @mrnoiz23 Funnily enough Consumer Electronics (Pete Best from Whitehouse) opened for Sunn o))), I don't think it was this show though but the first time I saw them, same venue though

  • @mrnoiz23 lol Pete Best, I meant Philip Best, I'm always getting Whitehouse and the Beatles mixed up

  • why would you ever go see this band

  • love drone love grind

  • sunn are a joke, earth are the real masters of drone, and even sunn o)) know it :P

  • drone metal is umm... odd its like the polar oppisite to grindcore

  • I'm not sure I would agree considering that grindcore's chromaticism and minimalism have elements in common with drone metal.

  • true but im mean as far as speed at least.

drone metal and the whole doom famliy is unfamlar to me im an expert in thrash death nwobhm melodeath

    (kinda) black(kinda)

  • @zeth205, to be honest, drone/doom is probably the genre I'm least familiar with, in terms of metal styles. I gravitate towards death, thrash, back, grind, traditional, and avant garde. Doom metal is very interesting to me but its obscurity makes it a bit more difficult to explore than say death metal, which has an endless parade of active musicians.

  • true in fact at first i thought drone metal was some ridiculous genre but tunes out its real lol

probly the resone no one knows of drone or the doom family is because there hasnt been a band to umm standout ex. like a big four or some thing just a few bands tht are underground even to the underground lol

  • Well, within the doom community, it seems some bands have attained the status of "houesehold name," like Pentagram, Winter, St. Viitus, Trouble, Candlemass, Cathedral, Sleep, Electric Wizard, and of course Sunn 0))). But I think it has an overall limited appeal because it's so defined by its sluggish desparation. It's too slow for a lot of metal fans and too dreary for most outsiders.

  • ya and most ppl in the under ground go more for speed lol

  • wow,,,ok this is different,,but not bad, somewhat of a comatose sound, i get the idea, music that puts ya in a trance i guess? i just wouldnt go out and buy a Less Paul just to play a few notes everywhere i go, thats money weather they have money or not,,lol...good shit though!

  • "To be fair, a lot of the people making positive remarks seem stoned/incoherent."

Yea Sunn O ))) hAIL sunnn oooo ))))))))) ZUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

  • Orthodox Caveman is easily the best track off the silly Black Metal album.

  • Damn i want to see these guys live! So awesome

Hahaha I love the description for the video

...Although I resent the remark "To be fair, a lot of the people making positive remarks seem stoned/incoherent."

I think I come off as very coherent. But I might have to change that before i go listen to some Live White

  • seems like "stream of consciousness" tecnique...everything is a feeling...get it out!!!...no reason, no mentality...just human instinct..

  • This goes very well with my fridge!

  • yeah i know i got the munchies too!

sunn O))) + weed + leftover chinese food = awesome!

  • @alaab925 story of my life man

  • the skill involved in making something like this...there must be at least 3 notes, someday i hope i can play the guitar like this

  • Gotta be honest with ya man, that toasted cranberry arugula sandwich sounds fucking incredible. Bet that was a sick show too, I hope they stop in western mass sometime, or any sick drone metal band for that matter.

  • I'm waiting the whole time that the rythm starts to change and to speed up but nothing is happening. Very boring metal genre.

  • Like it says in the description, it's only a 2 minute excerpt out of a 60 minute piece, and if you watch my other Sunn clips you will hear plenty of changes. However if you think good music = fast, don't bother

  • Oh this is a kind of music in a more artistic way, that's why they called Drone. They dont have riffs, chorus, bridges, etc, what you have to do is listen deeply, and find the pleasure in the sounds theyre making and feel the atmosphere. enjoy !!

  • ug................

  • HAH! LOVE THE INFO SECTION! but who wouldnt enjoy a turkey sammich?

  • many people read Sunn O (with saying the O), actually it's read only Sunn. The O))) means a circle, the name was taken from an amplifier brand. lol.

    great fucking band, thou...

  • really? i didn't know that... thanks

  • no thanks necessary, dude

    :D

  • please see the side bar (1,2 and 4) for my feelings about this. I will not say it is "not music" but it seems pretty damn dumb to me. Just my opinion. I guess I don't get it.

  • totally undrstandable. some music is just hard to get into (this being one type. I happen to love it though, thats just MY opinion)

  • Cool, why don't you fuck off and write an email to Sarah Palin about how about much you want to drive over a gay guy with a tank you unpleasant little shitwad

  • u mad

  • There's a pretty good band called Planet AIDS, actually. I personally prefer it to SunO))), most songs of which I find difficult to appreciate. It's too uneventful even in comparison to ordinary ambient. Well, Jedem das Seine.

  • This has got to be one of the best videos ever put on Youtube. Evar

  • Wow. Well, that certainly was quite an entertaining and varied performance. Such skill and technical detail must have been put into this, I could never even hope to play that brilliantly in my lifetime.

Alright, I understand and respect that some people enjoy this kinda thing, but even a small child could play this. In fact, I've heard a small child play something quite similar, and not even particularly on purpose.

(Crap, now I'm like one of those "witless turds" in the description)

  • @xXJerryTerryXx yep, you're witless turd cats. 1 & 3 by the looks of it (the ancient "my kid could do this" gambit)

  • Yeah, I was torn between "a kid could do it" or the popular "a monkey could do it", but a monkey probably couldn't. I guess the whole sarcastic "That took a lot of skill" gambit's been used a lot too. I should really be a little more original.

But I don't think I'm cat. 3. I never claimed it wasn't music, just that it was incredibly bland and took no skill to make. Still, it's not particularly "bad", just uneventful. I'd prefer this over something actually bad, like, say, Lady Gaga. xD

  • @xXJerryTerryXx fair play on the cat. 3 thing, i thought i had a reason for that but on re-examination, it appears i actually got nothing. apologies

  • it's actually "boring witless turds"

  • see them live, then post a comment, it's not fair to the musicians if you don't know what your talking about, they are a musical experience not really a band to just listen to or a band to watch on TV or on YouTube you have to experience the music you can actually feel it in your bones and it will make you trip out and question your vary existence. And no offense, but it sounds like you probly should.

  • No offence taken. Who am I to criticise something I don't have any idea about? Though I see what you mean about having to see them live. Perhaps I'll check them out.

  • seeing these next month, should be quite a spectacle to behold :)

  • I deleted my comments, so I will repost. I must say I am totally new to the genre, only having listened to a tune by this band called Within The Torn Apart, which is also drone, and who are heavily influenced by Sun O))) and Earth. Check out their MySpace page too. You might enjoy it. It takes a little getting used to, but it shouldn't be too big a leap since I am already into all sorts of doom metal, right down to funeral doom, which is pretty slow in itself.

  • Comment removed

  • I don't know what you're talking about but thanks I guess...?

  • I am sorry. I was trying to reply to another person whose comments have not appeared on this page. I thought for some reason the description was the reply. I apologize for any confusion I have caused; it is my fault. I also left a comment on your page, which you can disregard.

  • fuck yeah, I've always been into electronic drone, but this shit is heavy! check out Tim Hecker if you love harmonic noise

  • Hecker is awesome, especially his split with Aidan Baker

  • Another band to check out that play drone metal is Within the Torn Apart. You think this stuff is heavy, wait until you check WTTA out. They turn the bass all the way up to add to the heaviness of the music.

  • Nice band. I had never head about those before.

  • You should listen to NǽnøĉÿbbŒrğ VbëřřĦōlökäävsŦ. Make nice ambiant music!

  • looks like fun, thanks for the tip-off

  • I know it's a strange name but it's a real band!

  • I lol'd

  • Who???? ure joking......

  • (Sarcasm failed.)

  • "2) People who don't know the difference between feedback and distortion"

    Haha, so true.

  • I am reminded of the immortal words of Bob Dylan: "PLAY FUCKING LOUD!!"

  • Hey man,

I realize that drone is not a form of musical expression that manny people will enjoy. But please man; if you don't like it, don't comment.

I dont enjoy any of the performers/composers you have as favorites, but i'm not going to provoke you and other people by placing lame comments.

If you cant say something nice, don't say anything at all.

  • And for everbody who does like sunn o))), check out Bunkur. They're brutal, live ofcourse.

  • It's an ambient music sub-genre. It isn't about instrumental proficiency, it's about fucking atmosphere.

And I dunno, people who enjoy this kind of music are pseudo intellectual snobs? I dunno. Every Sunn fan I've met just enjoys the sound of feedback a whole fucking lot.

  • Reading this makes me understand... thank you.

  • sunn fan here, just thought i'd stop by and say i have a huge boner for feedback. i used to play guitar, now i just hold single chords forever and play around with the feedback.

maybe its all the weed i smoke......

  • How is it not music? It contains the two basic elements of music doesn't it? Melody and rhythm!

Since that's all you need for something to be called music, I say this is music.

  • look dude have you listen to the song shinking belle by sunn 0))) and boris...it is an evidence that they(sunn 0)))) can play more than drone

  • This is organised sound, therefore it is music.

  • music isn't about technical proficiency fag, it's about expressing thoughts and emotions through sound. sunn O))) create powerful atmospheres by building up tones around single chords. just because they dont sweep arpeggios really fast doesnt mean they aren't real musicians you lughead.

  • interesting

  • Would love to get absolutely baked and watch these guys play.

  • Bhahah loved the description. xD

May you tell me if that ''genre'' of music has a name?

  • the genre is drone metal/Earth tribute bands, probably

  • I didn't even know this type of music existed until a few days ago when a friend of mine attended their concert and told me all about it. I must say I am blown away by the originality involved in this music.. I am very much addicted!

  • when i first heard about Sunn O))) my impression was not, "This sucks", "this is stupid", or "this isn't music" it was more like "OH MY GOD this is amazing" any idiot can go out and play 90 miles an hour, but this takes patience, i saw them in philly and we had to leave early (to catch the train home) =[ but we could still hear them from 10 blocks away, it was awesome!!

  • Rock.

  • Monoliths and Dimensions is by far my favorite album this year. Love these guys.

  • The silence really hits you after you stop listerning to Sun 0))) thats for sure

  • I really enjoy listening to this. I'm sure they can play like Malmsteen or what have you, but they choose to be their own group, not like any other, and they're amazing in that sense.

  • its like a sonic youth noise jam minus the sonic youth and plus metal. delicious.

  • Just saw these guys, or rather felt them. They are masters of volume.

  • just saw them in newport ky... amazing...simply amazing.

  • fake

  • love this so much, bought the album, my first Sunn O))) album, never looked back

  • I didn't like this this morning, the first time I heard it. But there's something about these chords that just feel good.. It's like a heavy metal relaxation tape.

  • I know I could play this but its the live sound thats amazing I guess. The band dont want to play any actual structure as they want bass loud enuff to make you sick. I heard people actually throw up in their concerts as the grinding is so intense!

  • caveman music

  • Interesting. I would like to see them live rather than buy their albums, I bet the live sound is awesome.

  • im open to new kinds of metal but wat the fuck is this... it is really kinda retarded... ooo lets put on a robe and go in a room with fog machines and play 2 power chords every 5 minutes. learn how to play guitar jackasses

  • have you ever thought this is just a way of playing. Maybe there's the best guitar player of the world behind that robes...but he just plays something worth to be played. I They're using smoke machines...so what? don't others metal band use them in their shows?

i'm happy there isn't another metal band playing the same stuff like others. Music rebirths in changes.

  • ya i did think this was a way of playing... but then i remembered that packs of buffalo with down syndrome dont play guitar. thanks tho.

  • yeah...you should go and have fun with them.
