Who says Chopin is slower than Liszt? Especially in a tumultuous, almost savage piece like this. There was nothing like it in music before, and Brand tries to re-create the startling sense that it must have projected on the occasion of its first hearing. That is the performer's duty, as I see it. Also, remember; it's a captured moment; Brand did not play like this for publication.
... unfortunately, the very last chord at 8:05 is rather an idiosyncratic joke and takes away much from the intensity of this driven - and very interesting - performance ...
this pianist does not copy other interpretations but makes his own one. He does not look to be different either. he has his own personality and is absolute in style of the composer. great sensibility and great sound. singing the melodies, taking the necessary respiration, sense of structure, all in all great musicality combined with solid technique.
astonishing. he really thought everything through entirely freshly and freely. at first it surprises - then you see it works - then you like it better and better.
Many thanks for posting this amazing performance by Natan Brand; the most beautiful Chopin Scherzo; Brand was probably one of the most imaginative pianists of the seconf half of the 20th century. Everything what he touched turned vivid, fresh, free, and alive again. Here and in all other performances, he brings out hidden melodies, rhythms, and other possibilities thereby creating an impression that you hear the piece for the first time. One of a kind pianist. Bravo Mr. Brand!
Here is Natan Brand in concert live -- and lively! Without a doubt, this is the definitive Chopin Scherzo of all time. Brand throws caution to the wind and plays with the kind of security that allows for extraordinary displays of bravura alongside exquisite tenderness and tonal richness. Bravo!
I love this performance (from the Palexa set). His interpretations of Chopin and Schumann are nothing short of amazing. Just listen to those hidden voices and accents! I wish I could get hold of his Symphonic Etudes which I think is on an out-of-print APR set
Natan had a genius for making all he chose to perform perfectly beautiful, and unforgettable- a new piece for even the jaded listener of the repertoire,

Great job indeed; just wonder why he plays Chopin like Liszt's style - too fast
