Carmack may be the most confident on how to program the Cell, but he still may not be the most capable... Unless he can specifically trick-out the PS3 version, he's not really proving anything by claiming something but not showing it.

amazing concidering this is realtime, running @ roughly 30fps on current-generation hardware.

can you just freaking imagine what Carmack will be able to do on next-generation Xbox720, PS4, PC, Mac which will all have dozens of CPU cores plus at least 10x the graphics performance of todays systems ?

Rage will be 60fps on all platforms.

Carmack is thinking about the next generation, like the continued use of polygons and the virtualization of geometry. It's been 3 years since 360 debuted so Microsoft will probably release 720 in a couple of years, a short timespan for developers. Watch Carmack's Quakecon 2007 Keynote.

A friend of mine who went to E3 2007 said that ID Software will release DOOM 4 in 2009! He also said that the trailer will be released in 2008. Get excited!

The game probably uses the megatexturing technique, hence the quoted file size of the textures.
