@dragons73 me neither... I just watched the entire thing yesterday for the first time, and now im at the next generation part. The guy who plays chicken george is a lame character, role, and actor... The old chicken george had swaggg
@TheMidnightSnackGuy my grandma loved it i was like in 5th grade or so i had no idea what roots was but now i see why she loved it so my grandfather was a pullman porter he was almost 100 he passed like 2 yrs ago everyone called them "george" back then his name was edward i am almost 40 & jut saw roots good
Well this part of ROOTS is not apart of the book in that great of detail , But I don't care about all of that this Series brings light to the struggles that black people were faced with and I think whether its fiction or not it is true because all this may have not happened in his family but it happened to many others and he's just telling the story
I think that Roots shows what happened in American history, but it also gives insight into the experiences and struggles of black people around the globe. I mean, slavery also took place in countries like Jamaica and Barbados, plus many more, so I do NOT consider this to be just American history.
Is any of this a true story? Or is it all just similar to how things were during and after slavery. At the end of the original series Alex Haley makes it sound like a true story.
@jityr2 Roots is based on Alex Haley's family tree...his grandmother told him stories as a child of his great, great grandpa kipnapped from Africa. So when he grew up he traveled to Africa gather info from the tribe who shared his ancestor's last name and camp and started penning Roots over the course of a few yrs. Of course we can't say for sure if even event was accurate or he-say, she-say but supposedly its mostly accurate. Hope that helps.
@TheGlobalMisfit The Wiki article of Kunta Kinte says Alex Haley was the seventh generation of Kunta Kinte. Would that make Alex Haley the great great great great great grandson of Kunta Kinte?
@jityr2 Well according to Alex Haley, yes, he is the seventh generation of Kunta Kinte's family tree....Roots gets tricky and innacurate though, because in "Roots Generations", Tom, Kunta Kinte's great grandson Tom has two daughters with no mention of a son, but in the original Roots, Tom has a son, no daughter. That's why some began to criticize if Alex Haley's tale was true because of missing characters in the original and spinoff. lol Who knows? Its pretty interesting regardless.
@TheGlobalMisfit Roots also has a speical called ROOTS The Gift. It was a short story between the 18 years from Kunta being a teenager (Lavar) to a man (John Amos)
During ROOTS The Gift Kunta lived during the Nat Turner Virgina Rebellion, However during the oringnal ROOTS Chicken George lived during Nate Turner's leadership when was in his late 20 or early 30's. Kunta had been dead for about 20 years already.
@Mrbaltimore2001 I'll have to look that up now....thanks for the heads up! Yeah, it crazy how some mismatched timelines really make u wonder how accurately Haley had traced his family tree. I've heard that Haley went to court due to a lawsuit from an author (unsure of his name) who wrote "The African". I still respect him though for exposing an important part of American history. Black or white, we can learn quite a bit.
@TheGlobalMisfit Hey I did look into the story for ROOTS The Gift. It wasn't actually Nat Turner Kunta. It was a close simarly story of the Nat Turner's revolt in VA.
@TheGlobalMisfit This is 12 years later, the son would be an adult by now, on his own. The daughters are younger and that could explain why they were not seen. Just trying to figure a way to make it make sense, I guess.
@jityr2 Roots is based on Alex Haley's family tree...his grandmother told him stories as a child of his great, great grandpa, Kunta Kinte kipnapped from Africa. So when he grew up he traveled to Africa gather info from the Kinte tribe who shared his ancestor's last name and camp and started penning Roots over the course of a few yrs. Of course we can't say for sure if even event was accurate or he-say, she-say (may have some exaggerations) but supposedly its mostly accurate. Hope that helps.
I hate to say it but I think Alex Haley's Roots was some if not all fictional, I read a lot of stuff about how it is. But I'm sure similar things like this happened all throughout slavery times. But anyways, no matter if it's real or not I really do love this movie.
The Next Generation got good ratings but it did have several discrepancies which led many to believe that Alex Haley's ROOTS was largely fiction. Many dates and accounts in both movies did not add up. And there were many family members that were not addressed properly. Tom and Irene Harvey both just were removed from the series with no explanation as to how they died in the series.
@dakboyyall i know Roots generation has so many innaccuarcise with the first one..Like didn't Tom Harvey have a son..I remember the scene in the first one, after he gets whooped by the early Ku Klux Klan and is on the table he tells them to get his son out of the room so he wouldn't see him like that
I agree with some of the comments about ben vareen should have continued to play his role as chicken george in the Next Generations of Roots. It would have been more realistic*********
