Why is it perfect? Is the exterior all aluminum? Center control panels clever? Specifications of suspension setting on long trip? Valves on exhaust system or loudness on such a long road trip? How many times did you fill up with gas during the trip? Electronics on British made super cars, how did it perform on other aspects of the road trip, besides window glitches or start engine button? What were the options that showed up on this McLaren review car?

Well, mclaren really didn't make this car to be the fastest, they made this car for more like an every day use. That's why they choose the v8 engine for it and this beast has 24.2mpg which is verry impressive for a super car.

But I think when I'm slapping down the big jack for a super car, I'd have to seriously consider a Nissan GT-R as well as this, and a Porche.
And as I love Ferrari, I would have to go Lambo with the new German engines. Know too many people who have Ferrari horror stories. And to me, the journey is what makes a car special. Breaking down isn't fun!

Great review, couldn't have put it better myself. Clarkson was pretty unfair about the looks and the emotional side, it grows on you. I think everyone here would have one over a 458, especially as those seem to have a problem with catching fire. Every week Clarkson tells us (whether it's a supercar or a Skoda Yeti) 'This is probably the best car I have ever driven... in the world!', I say no more...
@00kirbyd What you stated "it grows on you" I believe is what McLaren wants the car to be with a customer. Starts off as something dull, doesn't handle the way you were hoping (unless you programmed yourself to drive the way McLaren wants you to be), and then it no longer becomes a car, but clothes. You wear it with pride, you're used to it, it cooperates with your fit, and then it feels so good.
@00kirbyd I would personaly have 458 over MP4 any time. Most reviewers say 458 is the best car they've ever driven. Everyone from fifth gear said so, everyone from top gear said so, everyone from evo magazine said so, etc. Its a better can than MP4 without a doubt, in every way. And its a bigger technical masterpiece than mclaren. It has a better engine, better gearbox, better brakes, better chassis....AND, huge majority of reviews say its the most fun and best feeling car they've ever driven.
@00kirbyd And no, 458's DONT go on fire randomly. It was a fault of the first few models which had a wrong type of plastic used close to the exhaust, and the plastic was melting on high temperature. It was redone and improved after the first reports of that issue. Also, Clarkson only said "this is the best car i've ever driven" 3 times. When he drove F430, when he drove Bugatti Veyron and when he drove the 458.

If it was me, I'd be far more comfortable driving the MP4 because it's less ostentatious than the 'look at me' Ferrari and more of a GT car you'd take across Europe. @sw1000xg You have clearly zero supercars passion. Driving these cars is about feelings, fun and getting the best of it. The difference between the 458 and the MP4 is that the Ferrari let's you drive it (one of the best ever in the handling) while the McLaren drives you and doesn't allow you to take it the way you want.
The MP4 is fantastic piece of engineering. The 458 is one the best supercars ever.

Some cars require a different way of driving look at the Fith Gear 458-MP4 test they hated the MP4 because it would not go sideways and that to a journalist is like the end of the world! It was also 0/10th slower than the 458! BS! It's defo the way a car corners and handles if it does not agree with them the times will always be slower!

@sw1000xg well then we are two different kinds of car fans :) For me the feeling is not always speed (ie acceleration, cornering grip, max. speed, etc.). For you it is more important, and gives you better feeling. Mp4-12c then is better suited to you than 458. And going sideways, i think, wasn't the only reason 5th gear didn't like mp4-12c. Brakes may be a bit better, but car isn't as stable as 458 under braking, the car was somewhat unpredictable (not consistent enough) and etc.
@cud0s Watch the vid of Fifth Gear it's only because it's not going side ways! I have watched Fifth Gear since it started and every car they put sideways. No idea why journalists do this? But even in other car mags it was the same because it wont go sideways they don't love it! It's PATHETIC! It was on the mag sites with comments on how the journalists where building it up to sell the car then all of a sudden they like the 458 better...
@StuRaz They tried too hard to like it! But because they didn't go sideways in the car they hated it! I have spoken to people who have driven both and most of them have said they liked the MP4 better! The Ferrari is all shouty and "alive" as you could call it but it didn't have that performance they wanted! Fifth Gear did the same with the GTR and Turbo S saying the Turbo S was faster in the test, and I have checked every track and only 1 track where the Turbo S has beaten the GTR.
@sw1000xg That's not what they said at all. It was only Tiff trying to drift it, Jason was out to set the fast lap which was still slower, and kept spinning the car in the process. I've not spoken to anyone that has driven either but even Autocar, despite this review, rate the Italia higher than this. I think everyone has. At the end of the day this isn't a race and if the Ferrari is now literally bringing people to tears at the wheel I'd say it's better.

Actually he's wrong, the guy who was previously the Stig test drove all the recent supercars on Car Magazine UK. The 458 has better lap times than this McLaren as well as a Superleggera and the Porsche GT2RS. Look it up, it's fact. Type in Car Magazine Ultimate Supercar shootout in the the youtube search.
@SPMNDK89 no offense mate but your wrong about the stig thing, the newest stig drove both the 458 and the mp4-12c, i know this because i haven't missed an episode of top gear since 2002 (basically when it was revived), you could be right about everything else tho, I'm not debating that.
Personally I think the Fifth Gear Review was terrible. The McLaren is a completely different car to the 458. It uses Hydraulic Suspension along with Brake Steer. Its something that needs to be learned to drive because the technology is so advanced. Its not a car you powerslide because lets face it, since when do you powerslide on streets? NEVER!!! Its designed to be driven not powerslide and thats all Fifth Gear give a damn about.
Watching this vid has made my mind up if i wanted one or not. Thank you Autocar and i apologise for the previous comment below with the f word. This car does not have an engine from another country which has been the case for some years i.e. Ariel, Noble, EVEN MORGAN has Honda, Ford and BMW engines in them! McLaren is more British than MORGAN is!
Anyway without British engineering and expertese Michael Schumacher would be a nobody. Not much people talk about the British imput in Ferrari.

the 12c is sophistication. not just technically but in the little details. it doesn't run around yelling "i'm a hypercar" like a rosso corsa prancing horse. its not boring like a porsche. its not an audi like a lamborghini. its awesome.
WOW! I am not fan of cars that are in BLACK or SILVER...i feel its very generic, however this truly looks great in silver. I don't even know why. I've always been a fan of that McLaren Orange...but there's something about this simple silver color that makes the car seem wonderful & the red brakes (for once) add a great compliment instead of just looking cheesy/sporty.

Starts off as something dull, doesn't handle the way you were hoping (unless you programmed yourself to drive the way McLaren wants you to be), and then it no longer becomes a car, but clothes. You wear it with pride, you're used to it, it cooperates with your fit, and then it feels so good.

@00kirbyd I would personaly have 458 over MP4 any time. Most reviewers say 458 is the best car they've ever driven. Everyone from fifth gear said so, everyone from top gear said so, everyone from evo magazine said so, etc. Its a better can than MP4 without a doubt, in every way. And its a bigger technical masterpiece than mclaren. It has a better engine, better gearbox, better brakes, better chassis....AND, huge majority of reviews say its the most fun and best feeling car they've ever driven.

@00kirbyd And no, 458's DONT go on fire randomly. It was a fault of the first few models which had a wrong type of plastic used close to the exhaust, and the plastic was melting on high temperature. It was redone and improved after the first reports of that issue. Also, Clarkson only said "this is the best car i've ever driven" 3 times. When he drove F430, when he drove Bugatti Veyron and when he drove the 458.

@derbigpr500 Well I think he also said the Skoda Yeti was the best car in the world, but he might have been joking... as he usually tries to be funny, but anyway thats not the point. If it was me, I'd be far more comfortable driving the MP4 because it's less ostentatious than the 'look at me' Ferrari and more of a GT car you'd take across Europe. That's just my opinion, but I appreciate your comments though, you know your stuff obviously. Thanks.

@00kirbyd Also, this review was done long before they've compared it to 458. Watch the Fifth gear comparison where they clearly say that 458 is a MUCH better car. And most things said about it comparing with 458 in this video are actually wrong and other way around.

@derbigpr500 Fifth Gear reviewing the 458 and MP4 where just totally biased against the MP4... I mean they couldn't do power slides in the Mp4 and THAT's THE only reason they didn't like it!!! Watch the vid!!! This is faster on a track faster on a straight and more comfortable... The 458 only has the passion and soul crap and I think that's a poor excuse for a car to be better!!! MP4 is better pure and simple!!!

@sw1000xg You have clearly zero supercars passion. Driving these cars is about feelings, fun and getting the best of it. The difference between the 458 and the MP4 is that the Ferrari let's you drive it (one of the best ever in the handling) while the McLaren drives you and doesn't allow you to take it the way you want.
The MP4 is fantastic piece of engineering. The 458 is one the best supercars ever.
Supercars are about beauty, sound and DRIVING emotions. And there the MP4 is disappointing.

And no I don't have a passion for them there a rip off all style all show all noise and what does it achive? NOTHING! My friend owns a 650bhp Litchfield and I get more please from that whooping Ferraris Porsches, Lambos on the track! I have the widest smile on my face when there behind me! the car is faster in a straight and kills them on track... All that other stuff is for knobs!

@Doo0ne Have to say this but look at Sport Auto Horst Von Saurma is only good in Porsches! Everything else he's a bit rubbish in! Some cars require a different way of driving look at the Fith Gear 458-MP4 test they hated the MP4 because it would not go sideways and that to a journalist is like the end of the world! It was also 0/10th slower than the 458! BS! It's defo the way a car corners and handles if it does not agree with them the times will always be slower!

@sw1000xg The most important thing in a supercar (and most of the others) should be feeling and if car is fast, but don't give amazing feeling, while driving it, than it's crap. Basically what he tested was comfort, and here mp4-12c is ahead of any other simmilat supercar. However feeling wise it's crap compared to 458 (at least what most reviewers tells us and what one of my friends friend, who have driven both, told be)

Ferrari? 10-20? So they should be good with the feel! But the MP4 is still the better car! They critics only gave it the thumbs up because it's always going sideways! @sw1000xg well then we are two different kinds of car fans :) For me the feeling is not always speed (ie acceleration, cornering grip, max. speed, etc.). For you it is more important, and gives you better feeling. Mp4-12c then is better suited to you than 458. And going sideways, i think, wasn't the only reason 5th gear didn't like mp4-12c. Brakes may be a bit better, but car isn't as stable as 458 under braking, the car was somewhat unpredictable (not consistent enough) and etc.

But even in other car mags it was the same because it wont go sideways they don't love it! It's PATHETIC! @StuRaz They tried too hard to like it! But because they didn't go sideways in the car they hated it! I have spoken to people who have driven both and most of them have said they liked the MP4 better! The Ferrari is all shouty and "alive" as you could call it but it didn't have that performance they wanted! Fifth Gear did the same with the GTR and Turbo S saying the Turbo S was faster in the test, and I have checked every track and only 1 track where the Turbo S has beaten the GTR.

@sw1000xg That's not what they said at all. It was only Tiff trying to drift it, Jason was out to set the fast lap which was still slower, and kept spinning the car in the process. I've not spoken to anyone that has driven either but even Autocar, despite this review, rate the Italia higher than this. I think everyone has. At the end of the day this isn't a race and if the Ferrari is now literally bringing people to tears at the wheel I'd say it's better.
And I wouldn't say this was an underdog

good show.. want me to buy one lol like that gonna happen. in my country 60 litres of petrol costs only $20. so if you have super car in our country you can drive as fast as you can, cause petrol soo cheap and police cars are all factory made. so their max speed is just less than 200km/hr.. its heaven for racers

I was enjoying this video, like many of your other videos, until you started driving on the wrong side around blind bends. I ride motorcycles. The speed that you were driving and the speed that I would have been riding meant that probably we wouldn't have reacted in time and you would've killed me. Actually he's wrong, the guy who was previously the Stig test drove all the recent supercars on Car Magazine UK. Personally I think the Fifth Gear Review was terrible. The McLaren is a completely different car to the 458. It uses Hydraulic Suspension along with Brake Steer. Its something that needs to be learned to drive because the technology is so advanced. Its not a car you powerslide because lets face it, since when do you powerslide on streets? NEVER!!! Its designed to be driven not powerslide and thats all Fifth Gear give a damn about.

Watching this vid has made my mind up if i wanted one or not. Thank you Autocar and i apologise for the previous comment below with the f word. This car does not have an engine from another country which has been the case for some years i.e. Ariel, Noble, EVEN MORGAN has Honda, Ford and BMW engines in them! McLaren is more British than MORGAN is!
Anyway without British engineering and expertese Michael Schumacher would be a nobody. Not much people talk about the British imput in Ferrari.

the 12c is sophistication. not just technically but in the little details. it doesn't run around yelling "i'm a hypercar" like a rosso corsa prancing horse. its not boring like a porsche. its not an audi like a lamborghini. its awesome.

WOW! I am not fan of cars that are in BLACK or SILVER...i feel its very generic, however this truly looks great in silver. I don't even know why. I've always been a fan of that McLaren Orange...but there's something about this simple silver color that makes the car seem wonderful & the red brakes (for once) add a great compliment instead of just looking cheesy/sporty.
