  • So excited to see them on Saturday!!!!! <3

  • Not the same without the trombones as in the original, but very good. Trumpet soloist ain't no Bob Flanagan.

  • Very good version and vocal arrangement. I'm partial to my version, I recorded it and posted it on YouTube with a sax solo. Pardon me for tooting my own horn, but it had 10,000 viewers in 5 months. :)

  • These young guys are incredible

  • I privileged to see the original Four Freshmen in concert and fall in love listening to their inimitable ballads. Greatest harmony ever.

  • Thanks Casey for the link - These guys are amazing! Love it!

  • i'm watching this cause casey abrahms led me here :) and he has good taste, this group is amazing!

  • pretty good !

  • These guys sound just like the original group who sang in the 50"s. I loved them then and now the new group!

  • who the hell could dislike this? incredible song.

  • I can not believe that there are 10 morons that dislike this great song.

  • Compare these guys with the '64 lineup from the Japan Appearance--tell me who's better--they are both simply magnificent, singing an incredibly difficult song, making it sound easy. 4 Freshmen, 4-Ever. Wolfsky9

  • A Vocal masterpiece. This is an incredibly difficult song, & this arrangement makes it even more so. What a treasure these 4 young men are! Wolfsky9

  • Love the Brian Wilson voice on top.

  • This is so much better than the usual jazz arrangement, where nobody but the rhythm section plays unless they're playing the head or the solo.

Terrific. What all jazz combos should aspire to.

  • Can't believe they didn't get better than the tepid applause I heard.

  • Bloody sensational....Thanks for posting.

  • 本当のフォアフレッシュメンとの関係はわからないが、良く似ている。

  • Vocal mastery, the kind we just don't hear anymore. No fancy electronics, no " studio sweetening", just 4 amazing voices, singing an Unbelievably difficult song & making it sound like anyone could do it. Gorgeous. Wolfsky9

  • Boy, these guys are just as good as the origals.

  • I just got back from seeing these guys. It was amazing!!!!

  • Damn, these guys are coming to my campus this week and I might be able to see them. Why am I just now hearing about these guys?

  • These fellas are as good if not better than the original Four Freshmen and that's high praise from me! WOW

  • I LOVE this group!! What no CDs for sale??? What a waste. Their voices!!!!!! Holy Cow!!!! These guys deserve center stage on National TV every week!!!!

  • Of course there are CDs and DVDs. They guys perform more than 100 gigs a year and have several great CDs and DVDs as well (the clip above is from their Live in Las Vegas DVD). The Four Freshmen Society is more than 3000 fans who couldn't agree with you more that they should be on TV every week. Check out fourfreshmensociety and join us; and buy CDs and DVDs there as well. • Wonderful! Thanks you. Takes me back. :)

  • A Vocal masterpiece. Wolfsky9

  • As Mr Sinatra once said, " you can wait around & hope, but you'll not ever see --or hear-- the likes of this again." With The 4 Freshmen--well, maybe it's not true: OMG, these 4 young men are simply awesome. This is music--for real. Wolfsky9

  • wow, I can hear why Wilson loved this

  • Now this is music.

  • Does anyone know the chords to this? I simply must play along!!

  • @Drieckus Song form: A A B A A section: | Cm / D7alt G7alt | Cm / Ab7#11 ./ | Cm / Am7b5 / | D7alt / G7alt | | Cm / D7alt G7alt | Cm / A7alt / | Ab9 / G7alt / | Cm / D7alt G7alt | repeat B section: | Bbm7 / Eb7 / | Abma7 / Adim7 / | Bbm7 / Eb7 / | Abma7 / / / / | | Am7 / D7 / | Gma / Cma / | C#m7 / F#7 / | Dm7 / G7 G7alt | back to A section... Something like that anyway... alt indicates an altered dominant chord (to imply the change to minor) song is basically in C minor (most of the time)
  • @WhiteBoySushiSC Oh, but these guys play it in Ab minor instead of C minor...

  • @WhiteBoySushiSC transport descending maj 3rd

  • Saw these guys back in the nineties at "the Oosterpoort" in Groningen. One of the most memorable concerts i ever saw. Highlighted by the surprising appearance of Bob Flanagan who joined them for 3 songs. Shivers went up and down my spine.

  • If perfection does not exist, The four freshmen are very close to it

  • @bluejazz44 Amen to that!! This is singing as good as can get. Period. Wolfsky9

  • @bluejazz44 gotta be hard trying to get close to a non-existing thing

  • luv the version of this on leaving las vegas by sting

  • u guys r amazing i love it

  • absolutely amazing

  • Great

  • Simply gorgeous vocal. I just hope these 4 young men stay together, & keep good music alive; we need them so badly. Ladies & Gents, THIS IS singing! Wolfsky9

  • great

  • Talk about being true to your roots! Their tone, dynamics, let alone harmonies, show how talented these young guys are! Very, very impressed.

  • Great song, sung by a great group.

  • I had the pleasure, back in the early 60's, to have performed with a vocal quartet....we would always feature, a Freshmen showcase of the original group...it was a musical pleasure, doing their arrangements...while performing at a rally, for the Michigan/Michigan State, the Freshmen were doing a one nighter, in Lansing and they happened to be on campus, so they heard us, doing our own music...they noted the close harmony, on a couple of tunes....they caught, back stage ..we got to share...!!

  • They are simply fantastic, such schmaltzyness, The use all of the great chord progressions in their presentations. Not many groups have such intricate vocal harmony, Manhattan Transfer excepted. I've loved the freshmen since 1949 or so.

Thanks for this great presentation of Angel Eyes. This 2007 group is about as tight a sound as I have ever heard them.

  • This song is so good that I cannot get it out of my mind, that is a great thing. For my co-workers I am sure know that it is not Top 40. This arrangement can go on the shelf as an exempilary addition of this music style. I hope these harmonies live forever.

  • I hate to say they sound as good as the originals but... they sound as good as the originals. A nice pass of the baton. Let's hope future generations love it too!

  • @adadand - Bob Flanagan regards this combo as the BEST Four Freshmen ever!

  • @Nuance5 No argument from me- but I liked the originals way back when I- and they- were young. Just a sentimental thing

  • @adadand - Sentiment counts for a lot. BTW - The FF sheet music says this arrangement was done for them by bandleader Pete Rugolo.

  • Brian Wilson must have gotten that famous high swoop from these guys. We know he studied their arrangements. Good on him for recognizing his influences. Now i listen to FF more than to Brian and the BB (for one thing, almost everything they did FF was really good - Brian and BB were inconsistent but their high points were sooooooooooo high). Hi Los are good too. But FF has THE sound, man!

  • Last september we travelled from Denmark til Oslo (Norway) to experience the Four Freshmen. It was marvellous to hear and see them live, and also spending time with freshmen fans of all ages. Thank you for sharing

  • It's amazing how they're such talented musicians AND vocalists.

  • God, this is great music! The guys play and sing terrifically, and Angel Eyes always gets me misty. A Class Act that deserves to be heard of ! Thank you for this posting!!

  • Great sound. Very classy.

  • Ladies & Gents, this is singing, like we may never --ever--hear again. Please keep up the great work guys--we need you so badly! Just a gorgeous vocal. Wolfsky9

  • What a class act. I will be following them. They sound very eerily like the originals. Beautiful and haunting song. Very personal to me.

  • man these guys rock, they came to my school and did a concert in Erie PA

they are actually really funny to talk to

  • feel bad about the girls hitting on them though xD

  • How did u hear about it

  • ...cuz i was there?

  • Holy smokes! I love the original guys but the more recent incarnation may be the best from a vocal blend perspective!

  • Original arrangement. Amazing with this New Four Freshmen. This style is inmortal.

  • @PonAir I just hope this style's not ephemeral either cause it's NICE.

  • @TSquared2001 You totally missed my point. The FF style is immortal

  • TSquared2001 You totally missed my point. FF style is immortal

  • oh yeah!

  • @piano12161770

    OH YES!!

  • Excellent, clean, clear, quality music that will keep pleasing many listeners! Thanks for the musicality! Soothing! Relaxing! Enjoyable!xxxx

  • This has been on PBS as part of Pledge week. Fantastic!

  • It's easy to see how The Beach Boys were inspired by this group. Close harmonies are so difficult to sing and they make it look easy. No pitch correction software required!

  • @Gregster138

If you can get the pitch perfect the first time is the best part. Live version is just as solid.

  • @Gregster138 Amen Sir! This is singing--real vocalizing--like we just don't hear anymore. Wolfsky9

  • The Best - Dreamy, Jazzy, Smooooth. There is no other sound as Fabulous as

    4 Freshmen....never will be...

  • MAGNIFICENT!! Thanks for posting!!

  • Wow, are we sure that performance wasn't synched to a studio recording?! Studio recording quality performance.

  • Wouw!

  • Every one of my friends who sees this vid is just blown away, as was I, the 1st time I watched; truly, these 4 young men are a vocal/ musical treasure, and a feast for the ears. This IS singing. Wolfsky9

  • I don't think it is correct to call this a "cover group". The group has been contiuously performing for over half a century. I would think of them as being like the Chicago Symphony - Keeping up the high standard as people come and go.

  • Take a look - these guys ain't half a century old. Sound great, but they are not the originals.

  • Great. I've always loved this harmony...have several of the tunes on my iPod taken from the CD "the Four Freshmen Collectors Series." This group is one of the best of the cover groups I've heard on the Internet over the years.

  • The Four Freshmen is one of the most perfect vocal group of all time

  • I've said it once, but I have to say it again: this is just masterful vocalizing, as good as it can get. These 4 men have something very special, and I only hope they fully appreciate it, and understand how important it is for us to keep hearing them. This is singing we just do not hear anymore. To all4 of you, May God Bless, and keep up the great tradition of The 4 Freshmen. Wolfsky9

  • Well said. I am 21 and love 60s music. I heard the original group was a major influence of the Beach Boys. With the incredible vocal range and harmonies I can see why. This is simply incredible. Music is just not made like this any more and that is a shame.

  • Ab - So- LUTELY INCREDIBLE! Intonation, Blend, Musicianship. Perfect!

  • sublime - it just doesn't get any better

    than this.

  • This proves that some things are timeless. Music does not have to change like the wind to be relevant.

  • Younger generations of singers (and fans) have attempted to relive the standards of the original group, and many have tried to do so along the years. What is admirable is the degree of accomplishment of this foursome.

  • amanzing and abadien

  • I did this for my NYSSMA solo except I had to sing with a cd that just played over and over through a loop. I didn't have as much freedom to do what they did, although I wish I could have.

  • I saw these guys at my school. It was a concert and it was mandatory that we went because we had to write a concert report over it. My classroom were the only people in there (about 20 people). The concert was free...I'm glad I went because I enjoy this group's music.

  • B .. E .. autiful!

amazing voices , can't stop hearing it

  • can't get enough of this, i played it 6 times in a row

  • Jesus, could it get any better than this? I listen to this tune 2-3 times daily.

It is so amazing that they are better than the originals.

Isn't it sad that we have to listen to cRAP which isn't even music.

  • Only 2-3 times daily? I listen to this while I'm drawin and this is looping around for an hour or two!

  • I grew up with the FF in the '50's. We had a group at my high school who could have given the FF a run for their money.

Well, we had better enjoy this recording history, because we may never see the likes of it again.

  • Really great.Another nice version to hear is June Christy.

  • beautiful...

  • This is a fantastic performance.

  • 最高!!凄く素敵な動画をthank you

  • They are good! I viewed the PBS Special of this show tonight. I saw the original Freshman in concert a number of times. The Road Show Album at Purdue University on Capitol LP with Stan, June, The Four Freshmen is about as good as it gets in listening.

  • i loce harmony

  • After hearing the latest incarnation of the Four Freshmen, I am a fan of the group as I was never into the original group of Four Freshmen. To me, the originals didn't shape the phrases and sing with the excitement and passion that I'd listen for in vocal groups (like the Hi-Lo's). However, this group of Four Freshmen are light years ahead of the original! Keep up the great work because what you guys are doing is nothing short of spectacular! The best group of Four Freshmen ever!!!!

  • As a music lover who grew up in the 50's, loving both The 4 Freshmen and The HiLos, let me say this: these 4 young men are just phenomenal. As Bob Flanigan said: " the best Freshmen, ever!", and I agree. It's young people like this who give me hope for " The Music Of My Life". Wolfsky9

  • the harminazation sounds like beach boyz but still good and i like the flugel solo

  • Brian Wilson wanted The Beach Boys to sound like his favorite group... The Four Freshmen!

He has said many times that if it wasn't for The Four Freshmen... there wouldn't be a Beach Boys! The current FF lineup is absolutely the best ever. See them in person if you can. You won't believe how multi-talented they are.

  • It doesn't get any better than this...unless you keep posting more videos chaz...(hint, hint).

  • The Four Freshmen--great voices, harmonization

    and arrangements! *****

  • yes yes yes.. saw them live. and theyre heavenly.

  • Any plans for them to tour the UK in 08 ??

  • Check out Sting's version on the "Leaving Las Vegas" soundtrack. It's pretty good too!

  • perfeckt

  • what a great song! and they harmonize beautifully !!!

  • they harmonize like the beach boys... awesome

  • Well, actually, the Beach Boys harmonize "like the Four Freshmen". Brian Wilson has always said that he was profoundly influenced by the Four Freshmen. The Beach Boys even recorded "Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring" note-for-note from the Freshmen charts in tribute. Love the Four Freshmen? Join us: fourfreshmensociety com (add your dots!)

    ReFRESHingly,

    Chaz

Four Freshmen Society Membership Director and Webmaster

  • On the contrary, the Beach Boys harmonize like

The Four Freshmen. As Brian Wilson said... if it wasn't for The Four Freshmen, there wouldn't be a Beach Boys!

  • fair enough guys... I hadn't heard of these guys before I found this and I had grown up with the beach boys, so... I made a connection. After all, isn't that what it's all about?

  • chazcone is completely correct. Brian Wilson learned much of his craft by listening very closely to Four Freshmen records from the 1950s.

  • Are these guys great, or what!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Going to see them in two weeks! Hope I can keep it togther:--they bring back so many memories!

  • well who are these people are they even related to the original boy's ?

  • The Four Freshmen are the current iteration of the group that has been performing without interruption since 1948. The personnel change over the years but the ownership of the name and the sound remain with original Freshmen member and lead singer, Bob Flanigan. He mentors the performing Freshmen still.

  • This is ridiculous. They truly are the best incarnation of the Four Freshman. Holy moly!

  • Great arrangement!

  • This chart is by the FF's original mentor and bandleader, Pete Rugolo (vintage early 50s). The song was written by Matt Dennis and Earl Brent (1946). A Classic jazz standard, recorded by dozens of artists over 60 years, but never better than this performance!

  • Just what I needed today... Thanks

  • nice, i like it!

  • Chaz -- It keeps cutting out --Your items are only one I have a problem with

    Can you resubmit?

    GR Jack (Jiving Jack)

  • Chaz

Can you get it to play so it doesnot kee cutting out..The ones you put on are the only ones I have trouble listening to.

    GR Jack

  • i looove this song but just don't get the lyrics. i mean, i understand word for word but i'd really like to learn what the song is really about. any of u happen to know? (A)

  • hey--it's a song about lost love. a break-up; someone dealing with still loving someone even though they're no longer around, and wishing they were still- to the point that they have to find out who their lost love is now loving.

  • The original Freshmen sang this tune in the LP "Four Freshmen and Five Trombones" by Capitol Records. It was arranged by Kenton arranger Pete Rugolo and the great Frank Rosolino provided the bone solos.I think was one their finest performances.

  • Aren't these the same arrangements, like the Ellington band is still playing Ellington? If there is still an organization called the Duke Ellington band, generation III, after Mercer. Or is Mercer still running it?

  • Great rendition of a great tune! I saw the Four Freshmen about 6 years ago in Calumet, MI. Kevin Stout was with the group playing guitar and trombone. His chops on bone are first class. Last I heard he was living and playing in Las Vegas.

  • "Angel Eyes" as performed by The Four Freshmen is arguably one of the best renditions of this song you'll ever hear. The terrific harmony, and wonderful professionalism they bring to this bittersweet song is simply breathtaking. A class act!

  • This is unbelievable I can't put into words how talented they all are and how much I love listening.

  • The new group are excellent both as musicians but as a

singing group, would love to see them in person. BUT,

I was raised on the 2-3-4 groups and they will always

be the Best. I fully respect Mr. Flanigans comments, but he was part of the Best Ever. With the current group, I miss the trombone, and the inter-play bewtween the group members.

  • I agree, but the original Four Freshman in 1952 singing at Butler State U. were what Stan Kenton called the group that sang like Stan Kenton played. Never been a group quite like them.

  • Wow ! They are smooth. Like the original 50's group.

  • Bravo. So nice to remember there are artists still making such great music.

  • The new Four Freshmen are super great, and come right up to the true Freshmen standard. A classic

Matt Dennis song sung as well as the original group

    back in "55. It's from "4Freshmen 5 Trombones"

  • Thank goodness we can still listen to these guys, and this is one of their best numbers; unforgettable!!!

  • Fantastic! Can't wait for the Edmonds Community College Jazz Camp. The Four Freshmen perform Aug. 6. Alum Bob Ferreira in the house!

  • Great!

  • One of the best arrangements of this song you'll ever hear. These Four Freshmen are the best yet, their vocal

    harmony is effortless!!

  • So beautifully done

    Their music is so addictive

  • As someone said earlier, this song is not done well by most singers or groups. This performance shows what the song can be. Simply the best Angel Eyes ever done. Kudos to arranger Rugalo and the Freshmen.

  • my absolute favorite. hard to find stuff.

  • OMG!!! I've had these three videos on repeat for the last three days, I'm in love!!!

    - You're so far above me

    - Angel Eyes

    - Day In, Day Out

  • Does anyone know where I can get a video or recording or "Girl Talk" it's one of my ultimate FAV!!!!

  • "Girl Talk" was recorded on seven different FF albums over the years. Your best bet would be the "Live at Butler" CD released in 1986.

  • Brilliant.

  • A treat for the senses thanks to U-Tube!

  • Smooth and beautifully done! Bravo!

  • This was always one of my favorites. This group is as good today as ever!

  • I used to think a FF group without Flannigan fell into the "nice try" category. With Brian on lead, this group is every bit as good as those with Bob!!

  • Bob Flanigan, an original member of The Four Freshmen, says that these guys are the best Four Freshmen combination ever. I love Bob Flanigan and I agree with him!

  • I guarantee you will get impressed even more when you hear them live.

  • What can one say?? Brilliant!!!!!!

  • The "Freshest" Four Freshmen you'll ever hear! This terrific vocal group continues to amaze with their harmony and musicianship. If you haven't seen and heard them in performance, go to their website and check when they'll be appearing in your area. Make it a point to see these talented guys in person. I guarantee you'll be thoroughly entertained!

  • you cna see how brian wislon was influnced by them with the beach boys

  • Love these guys!!! First saw the Freshman in 1956 at the Pasadena Civic w/June Christie and Stan Kenton. They were awesome. GOTTA AGREE WITH FLANNIGAN, THEY ARE THE BEST. THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY AWESOME. DO NOT MISS SEEING THEM IN PERSON. IT IS A TREAT FOR THE EARS AS WELL AS THE EYES (MY WIFE)!!!!!

    dg

  • I saw that same show in Boston in 56, to my great surprise they all played instruments. An experience never forgotten.

  • You'll never hear anything better'n this!

  • Incredible -- originally recorded in the early 50's and this version is loyal to the Rugalo arrangment. Enjoy...

  • The 4Freshman have always been my favorite group. I began listening to them when I was in the Air Force in 1954, and saw them in concert while a student at Southern Ill University in 1958. I love there style and tone. I hope that this group will continue on forever!

  • I have been listening to the FF since their very first recording. If you shut your eyes you would think this was the original group. What harmony - what talent.

  • As usual, the harmony is flawless, and their all-around musicianship is truly awesome . . . .such talent, and Curtis is the whip cream on top of it all. . . jenny

  • HOW SWEET IT IS...the BEST utube has to offer for sure.... don't miss any opportunity to see these guys in person. It is something you will never forget and will remain a fan always.
