This sound that you hear up there is pretty much their only sound. They do some ballads, but Morris Day, although a great frontman, does not have great vocal chops. They rarely get out of this "80s funk stomp" box. Nor should they. But Prince, love him or hate him, doesn't even know how to spell "box". ("bØ><", or something, probably.)

@getkristan i absolutely agree with you, i have listened to Prince since the 70's, i in no way would ever dismiss the ability and innovation he has. however the time came along at exactly that, THE RIGHT TIME! they touched a part of my generation that had not been touched, and actually made you feel like walking down the street telling everyone you met, I'M JUST COOL lol. And it's not like the band cannot do other sounds -- just listen to the hundreds of songs Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis produced, or Jesse Johnson's music -- but I'm not expecting The Time to sound like Usher, R. Kelly, Beyonce or whoever in the world you think they should sound like.

I agree with geosh78. Jesse Johnson is not just a regular guitar player. And I am a big fun of Jellybean Johnson, one of the funkiest drummer ever. This version was included in a latin-american cable TV edition of SNL.

This is because Sautrday Night Live has a dress rehersal earlier in the evening evert show..and that';s where these two performences come from..proably a DVD or syndicated version.

Aaaahhhh... now I understand. In the version I have, Jesse's guitar wasn't working for the first half of the song and you could actually see the guitar tech come out on stage to work on it.
