I noticed that the audio is on the Right side rather than stereo. I always like the bass line on the off beat for this song rather on both sides and on beat.
This is now and forever will be my absolute favorite, from my #1 favorite band of all time. The best 4 minutes of my life that I can relive over and over so long as I can keep pushing the |<< button.
I love their early tunes they have new wave to the synth the later works have industrial to the synth, totally love earilier tunes, just like this tune, AWESOME
@SpaceIntruderDetecto I didn't realize that 242 was so blessed with good gear. I knew that U-Men referred to an early Roland digital synth, but that's about it. Loved these guys. Can't believe I didn't know this one. It sounds like some of their somewhat early material.
I wonder if this is what Joy Division would have been like had Ian Curtis not killed himself, provided they still progressed to the danceable electronic sounds of New Order.
@tetiontkon Only the vocals are similar really, so I think not. Joy Division were post punk and New Order were indie / synthpop. Whereas this band are electronic industrial and influenced by DAF.
This cheesy video doesn't do the song justice. Very dark, indeed, love it. Geography was great but the "Official Version" record was their masterpiece I think.
I love 242's early works like this one but always wish I had the chance (and money) to give songs like these the visual they deserve. Their lyrics and music paint such strong pictures; Militaristic, but always with an interesting storyline. Perhaps a WWII flick with 242 on soundtrack. I imagine all their hero's fighting the unwinnible but noble fight. "We'll always be remembered, we'll always be dismembered! "
Are you kidding me? I love this video! It's very simple what with only a black background, test pattern, strobe light, and totally awesome geeky belgian dancing! Kind of Ian Curtis/Gary Numan-esque.
It's completely reminiscent of it's time period and nationality. And I have to say when music is slightly dated, it only adds more to it.
@artmonkid I think this was in the very early years, they were really trying to be different and unique...and I am sure their budget didn't allow for much...they made what they could for the technology and the budget....I think it was cutting edge..and I've seen worse.
Well it was early 80s.There was almost no Sample Clearing back then. Also all these great HipHop Productions from the late 80's / early 90s wouldn't exist without these heavy Sampling. It was a grey area that exist these days.
i never realized this song had a video!! ive seen lots of their videos too! wow, this song has such a haunting sound! and the video itself has really neat effects! jean-luc demeyer knows what hes doin!!!
ok. the wall is painted with blacklight colour, his face and hands are painted with blacklight colour, then there is a grid projected from a blacklight lamp and inbetween there is a strobe. just like that.
Standing so tall / The ground behind No trespassers / On every floor A garden swing / And another door She makes it clear / That everything is hers A place of abode Not far from here Ms. Van de Veer All that belongs to / No-one sees Curtains that waver / When evening falls Inclosed by fences / Smothered by wood Who stands behind / The shadows of the trees
the black clothes absorb the light because of low reflectivity. his light skin has a higher gain (reflective quailty) and returns lightwaves efficiently. same reason theaters have dark interiors.

This track has such a beautiful cold electronic ambience with an analogue warmth (as does most of Geography), I've never heard another artists production that sounds remotely similar. Original and legendary. 242 - The Uneclipsable.

Moog Source : dual oscillator Mono synth
Roland System 100 Modular Synth
Roland TR-808 Drum Machine (Duh!)
I think the blue characters (Numbers & letters) are from the Roland MC-4 or MC-8 Microcomposer Digital CV/Gate Sequencer (Pre-MIDI)
