  • I almost thought this was music that played in my childhood, but then horrible physics hit me in the knee.

  • nineko, can i use this song in my hack? i can edit the credits at the end

  • @MegaChaolover Sure, let me know how I can send you the smps file.

  • @nineko i have s1 hacking studio v2 so it can read smps songs (bin format) its easy. If you can send me the link i will put the song and edit the end credits to put your username

(sorry if i don't understand or i have bad english im spanish)

  • Yo soy italiano y hablo un poco español. Mira el tuo inbox por el link.

  • What program did you use to make this? I'm interested so I can learn to make 16-bit songs when I make a game :D

  • @PlayingItOldSkool A few years ago I wrote a program that converts music from the XM (eXtended Module) format to the format used by Sonic games, you can look it up on Sonic Retro (I can't put a link into a Youtube comment, sorry, but it's easy enough to look for it). As of today there are other even better alternatives, though, such as Shiru's tracker or the mid2vgm series (by ValleyBell and me).

  • @nineko could you give me link (or name of tool) what will convert music form midi to smps.?

  • @pkstarstorm1up Thanks!

@Chubzdoomer No, I actually inserted this song into a Sonic 1 ROM; with a flashcart you could play it as-is on your Mega Drive / Genesis / Nomad.

  • I think this music actually suits Green Hill quite well.

  • Sounds like there's a little too much going on with the music for it to be suitable for a Genesis game, but a great effort no doubt.

  • ;) Go Sonic!

  • this version sound like Chemical plant to me. And thats not a bad thing.

  • can you make that track w/o the sound effects, please?

  • Can you actually re-program the instruments of the OPN synth (in Sonic games)? If so,someone should develop an interface and a program for Sega Genesis to allow it to use it as a MIDI synthesizer as well as in older DOS games as an OPL synth (see Prince of Persia, perfectly ported sounds from the Sound Blaster version). It IS possible (you would need to use both controller ports for that to work).

That would be really nice and I would love to see someone do that.I am not requesting anything...

  • I wish this was the original sound track

  • Can you do the full version?

  • can you upload the ROM that this song is on you would be the best man!

  • how do they do that

  • How do you convert a MIDI to a 16 bit audio file ? Do you use some kind of virtual instruments (VSTi) ?

  • GOLDEN TIMES SONIC WAS THE SHIT

  • This is either as good as or better than the Wii version's song (which is also synthesized).

  • for some reason this really fits!!!!!!

  • that guy who disliked...

    its DR ROBOTNICK :O

  • I thought this sounded kinda like Bridge zone before, but now i'm not so sure

  • BLACK EYES?! RUINED FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @twcoursolle Dude, thats what sonic was BEFORE sonic adventure.

  • @dbn300100 the "ruined forever" part or the "black eyes" part?

  • @twcoursolle The black eyes.

  • @dbn300100 oh i see

  • @dbn300100 oh.

  • Wow, this sounds awesome!

  • Nice Splash Hill Music!

  • this sounds waaaaay better 16-bit

  • this is so wack, never mix old school with new school. in other words, IF IT AINT BROKE THAN DONT TRY TO FIX IT. leave the original, this was horrible

  • Not as good as the original Sonic 1 stuff, but it sounds a lot better than the original version of the new Splash Hill stuff. Well done.

  • Sounds nice :)

  • can i have this hack?

  • now I hope you can all see how awful this song really is.

  • the 16 bit version sounds so better than the original.

  • fits so well :3

  • good better then some other vid of trying to put satam music in sonic 1 wich failed but you get a 9 out of 10 only thing is differint is that we were exspecting all the other acts

  • This is way better then sonic 4

  • Hey, you mind if I use this in an upcoming fan game I'm working on?

  • @woolythehedgehog You are welcome to use this song wherever you want, I am very happy that you like it! Just make sure to credit both me and Rampkorv who sequenced the midi :)

  • @nineko Thanks! I'll be sure to credit! :)

  • @nineko hi Nineko, how do you add other music to a sonic game?please respond :)

  • Terrible theme for Sonic. Sonic 4 had the worst freaking music in the series. Everything was way too bubbly for its own damn good. There was nothing charming or memorable about its themes. The instant the level finished in this video and you went into the classical stage ending theme, you can see the sharp difference in inspiration.

  • Ugh, that melty-crash NES Megadrive fuckshit synth is driving me insane in both versions of this song. But I have to congratulate you on this, I could have never done anything like this. All you did was choose a bad channel for the main sound to the music.

  • Oh god FM hi-hat

    WHY

  • The "dingalingdings" need work.

  • how do you put the vgz file into the actual game/rom itself. sonic retro doesnt explain it at all on how to do it.

  • @videokiller214 you don't put a vgz file into the ROM. you put a 68k SMPS .bin file format into the ROM.

  • @ATV642 tell me more

  • MUCH better than the original

  • nineko, you made it better than Sega. But, the song itself is too loud.

  • This has 128 likes and 1 dislike.

This is the best youtube video ever.

  • does ANYONE else think this would go better in emerald hill?

  • awesome music :p

  • I was surprised how good the music in Sonic 4 is. I was even more surprised how good this is.

  • @Hammy519 and @RayAndFlare Nobody knows why the names changed... He's Robotnik sometimes... Eggman other times... In SA (DC) Sonic and Tails call him Eggman and he gets upset saying that his name is Robotnik. In SA2B goes by the name "Eggman". He even says it himself. I don't think the creators care and neither do I lol.

  • That's very nice! :D

  • eGGMAN DISLIKED THIS VIDEO XD

    sonic kicks ass!

  • i don't have MP3 do you have WMA/wav file?

  • love it, sound prettier in this version

  • What Splash Hill would have sounded like had the suits at Sega decided to not "modernize" it. I bet Senoue really wanted to make it like this but the final decision was probably out of his hands.

  • @earlyriser03 dont be ridiculous really. Releasing a new SONIC game in 16 bit would be nothing more than a ridiculous choice. Dude, grow up, get over it, stop bitching around like a whore.

  • @jotenko How about you read for comprehension first, pal? I was making a comment on Senoue's choice of music composition: more Gen/MD accurate synths vs. the more modern instrumentation interspersed with mere Gen/MD samples that was actually used in Sonic 4. Other than the initial acclimation to new physics, I have very little to complain about Sonic 4. Oh and be sure to tell Capcom that releasing new games in retro 8-bit style is a bad idea. Mega Man 9 and 10 were total bombs.

    Oh wait...

  • Since you did this, someone should hack Sonic 1/2/3 so it has Sonic 4 levels, music, graphics (obviously mimicked), ect.

  • @MistaBird Stephen from Sonic Retro is working on that. Look for "Sonic 4 Genesis Edition" on the Sonic Retro Forum.

  • @nineko nope

he meant recreate sonic 1/2 and 3 in sonic 4's style

  • @nineko Cancelled.

  • @CannyTails Thank god....

  • @nineko Is it just me or is this version more catchy then the actual song? Great job on this!:D

  • i think if the music was slowed down a little then it would match with this stage... but any way awesome job

  • You are great at what you do. I also LOVED the rom you made(even though Bonus Stage #1 was my favorite melody of all). Thanks for incorporating Neo-Geo audio in a Sega Genesis/Megadrive rom. You are the best :D

  • Thats what you call Splash Hill Zone! W00T!

  • how did you do this?

  • Can make the hack available to download?

  • Now THAT is tits.

  • I think act 3 fits Green Hill much better. I love playing while listening to hapisan's jazz Scat remix!

  • what? no big coin?

  • It kinda sounds more like 12-bit.

  • sounds like sonic 3d

  • what game is the music from?

  • @sonicthewerehog493 THE MUSIC IS FROM SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 4 EPISODE 1

  • @sonicthewerehog493 Sonic 4 ep 1

  • this sounds more 8-bit

  • nice Music! it's you yourself that I wrote?

  • The only flaw in this video is that the BGM drains out the sound effects, while the original BGM doesn't.

  • No one missed the like button. So far you got a perfect rating. Good Job. Love the music.

  • Yay, no one has hit dislike!!!

  • plz do create a port hack when this game comes out

  • Hm This is OK but not too good. Poor choice of premade instruments. A song like this deserves its own FM instruments

  • I like to see, you're still on music hacking. The song has very cool voices, and everything i hear from this song is correct. So 5/5 for you.

  • lol at the tags "Ivo Robotnik Is Much Better Name Than Eggman"

  • Did you go into the rom files and replace the music file of green hill zone with this one? If so, can you tell me how to do that?

  • @uscdrew1 Yes. How? It's explained on Sonic Retro (forum and wiki).

  • @nineko Sonic Retro is hands down the best Sonic website I know. That's really not common for me to say such things broadly, but hell, it has such an awesome hacking community... They are what I believe to be the real true future of Sonic.

  • sounds better than the real version

  • you gotta stop jumping every 5 seconds though

  • it is very nice to see that you're still working on music after sonineko got cancelled.

  • @sonichackman1 Thanks. I appreciate your feedback :)

  • How did you replace the music on the rom?

  • Since you seem to actually respond to comments, may I ask where you got the midi so that I can run it through famitracker?

  • @cavemano123 Sure you can, just make sure to credit Rampkorv if you use this midi, as he sequenced it. Unfortunately I can't put the link in this comment as Youtube is retarded and filter URLs, so I'll add it to the video description :)

  • @nineko Thanks, I really enjoy this song (especially your version) and cant wait to sequence it through famitracker, hopefully by then the song isn't overused even more by other "remixes" out there.

  • @Hammy519 Weird how the Doctors name suddenly between SA1 and SA2 like in Sonic Adventure Tails says "It's Eggman!" And the Doctor replies "Silence! My name is Robotnik" and then In SA2 he refers to himself as the ingenius Doctor Eggman, and his theme song litteraly says "I am the Eggman!"

  • hey sonicfan. you mentioned you used mod plug tracker, i dont know if this is the way to do it because im new to this program (your video inspired me to use it :P) but can you link me to a 16 bit dls or something similar? the one you used here

  • THIS IS AWESOME!!!! But i still favor the "megadrive-ized" version that geckoyamori made. try to put that in instead of this.

  • doesn't seem right

  • Bet you guys anything that when this game comes out, there'll be music hacks and everything. XD

  • holy crap that song's awesome! =D

  • ...you know, guys, I think some of this music being made in Sonic 4 was meant to be in 16-bit. This video seems to somewhat unintentionally show that.

  • Cant wait for Sonic 4. Hope it can prove Classic Sonic justice like New Super Mario Bros did for Classic Mario.

  • Very Sonic-y I love it

  • Instruments seem a bit too loud, but otherwise, it's very fitting.

  • MY EARS! X_X

  • Could you possibly put the raw genesis music file online somewhere?

  • This video gives a perfect example of how well modern Sonic music follows the classic style with modern instruments.

  • How do you convert music into genesis format?

  • @sonicfan966 There are two programs which can be used: xm3smps (by me) and xm4smps (by Puto). Go to the Sonic Retro forum (or the Sonic Retro wiki) to find directions and tips to use them :)

  • @nineko Alright, but how do I create xm files? Or how do I convert music into XM files?

  • @sonicfan966 One of the most used programs nowadays is Mod Plug Tracker, which is freeware. It can import midi files, although most of the times it doesn't do a very good job, so manual editing is required. Ultimately, XM files aren't much different from the format used on the Genesis, so if you learn how to use trackers, you'll be able to make very good Genesis music :)

  • Are they hard to use?

  • It fits so well!

  • get used to that island guys cause thats where episode 1 takes place south island then episode 2 will take place on west side island then episode 3 will be on angel island i got this info from sonic wiki i think it might be true cause splash hill zone looks alot like south island

  • @cb19882000 I was hoping that Sonic 4 would be set on a new seperate island from Sonic 1, 2 and 3&K.

  • I like this song in 16 bit!

  • I want the rom for this.

  • For everyone who requested a downloadable version: I just converted this song to mp3, the link is in the video description (I can't post it in the comments).

  • Do you have this song in a downloadable form?

  • Did anyone tell you that this was featured on the SEGA forums?

  • Yes

  • This is amazing!

  • I fucking love Sonic music!

  • Me to!

  • Epic win.

I like the video. Not the new rating system.

  • Give me a longer soundtrack of this song

  • I call dibs on Sonic 4 Genesis Edition!

  • Oh god damnit. I was just working on such a mix. I created the MIDI, and even downloaded a Sega Genesis soundfont (though I was having problems getting some of the instruments to work). And then I found ANOTHER version of the same concept.

Gah! Oh well. This is an amazing mix btw. What instruments did you use? I would like to give the mix a shot either way.

  • It just doesn't fit does it? Needs more New Jack Swing meets JPOP....

  • For the Sonic signature sounds, what did you use? VST? Soundfont?

  • No, I just converted this song to a format usable on the Genesis, and I replaced the regular Green Hill Zone music with this, in a Sonic 1 rom; then I played it in a Genesis emulator, this is actual gameplay. To put it simply, if you had the proper equipment, you could play this on your real Genesis console on your real television :)

  • The Level Looks strange. Is it modified? The S-booster is too short.

  • No, that's the upper S tube. There are three paths in Green Hill Zone 1: the one you're mentioning is the lowest one and contains two S tubes; the middle one is the one I took in this video, and has only one S tube; the upper path, where you can get by using the moving platforms, is at the top, and contains plenty of rings, and no S tubes at all.

  • The music sounds great and it's pretty fitting; Sonic games just don't sound right without synthesized music, but like another poster said, it's a little too loud. I also think it'd help if one of the melody sequences were up an octave.

I dunno, maybe it's just me.

  • It's good nineko, but I think the instruments are too loud. :\ Possibly, just adjust the voices a little bit and it would be even better. :D

  • This is what I expected to hear out of Sonic 4. Sure, it's HD, and better quality music can be made, but I was hoping for something more reminiscent of the originals.

  • this fits almost perfectly, wow.

  • @Tr0tim Why? Is it bad because it's new and nothing less than fifteen years old could possibly be good in any way?

  • No, I just don't like it. Too... synth-y.

  • Cool music.

  • It does fit very well, and I agree Ivo Robotnik is a much better name than Eggman.

  • @MaceH1ndu Eggman is just a nickname he's accepted for some reason... Even though it all started when Sonic called him a giant talking egg to imply he was overweight. Yet, for some reason they still call him Eggman in Sonic 4, even though it takes place BEFORE Sonic Adventure and before they started calling him that! sigh...

  • y'know, you're right about that. But in Japan he's always been called Eggman.

  • @RayAndFlare Well, yeah, but I thought everyone knew that, so I didn't think that was worth mentioning. But there aren't that many people who remember Sonic Adventure well, so I felt I had to spread the word.

  • I owned sonic adventure, and I remember the scene. But yeah, I never really added 2 and 2 togeather and thought about the fact that adventure would be set after sonic 4 meaning he'd still be called robotnik. But also, his first name (Ivo) spelt backwards is ovi, which means eggs.

  • @RayAndFlare that's true but in North America he was originally called Robotnik. therefore, i don't see why his name has to be changed in North America when they already had his name changed. i understand that they referenced Robotnik to his real name in SA1 and the anime, but what i'm saying is, he started as Robotnik in NA and should stay that way. at least for the sake of Sonic4 since it's picking up right after Sonic3.

  • @RayAndFlare not really, robotnik came before his nickname that came shortly after. after all robotnik is japanese and they named him that first. but they took and still take a liking to the nickname they gave him rather than his real name

  • @Amaranthus616 Acutally It was eggman all along in japan. They changed it to Robotnik to give him less of a foreign name to the western audience

  • @TheSonicWarrior eggman was always a nickname, it still is. its not his real name, the japanese like it better than robotnik so they stuck with it. his name was always ivo robotnik

  • @Amaranthus616 then why does the ship in wing fortress zone say EGGMAN-01? or why its called the DEATH EGG ZONE hm? learn the back story of how the games were made before you comment ok?

  • @TheSonicWarrior cus they used his nickname cus they liked it better, the japanese like his nickname better than his real name, it doesnt make eggman his real name cus they like it better, he was called robotnik first

  • @Amaranthus616 1st off its "because" not "cus" stop acting like a 2 year old. 2nd Japan tend to change things before released to the western audience. In the Japanese manual they explicitly used this line "The malevolent gifted scientist, Dr. Eggman, prepares his bad intentions again" i'll pm you to the link on the sonic retro forums so you can see with your own eyes.

  • @TheSonicWarrior and when you click on his name it says he was born ivo robotnik, and as the game came before any other sonic media that would say robotnik is his real name and the nickname is eggman

  • @Amaranthus616 after you pm'ed me I just realised that we're basically arguing about our own opinions on eggman/robotnik's name

  • @TheSonicWarrior yuo, i came to realise this as well

  • Oh well, plothole.

  • awesome! this there a download link too this this.
