I saw this movie when it first came out in the student union building at the University of Texas. It was the at the time I first came to Kauai. I've lived an adverturous life, Marin County in the 70's. The Virgin Islands in the 80's. Back on Kauai now for 10 years. I've seen Bora Bora at sunset and Tahiti at sunrise. I've choked on the air in Mexico City. I've made sweet love to hundreds of woman. I've been an ethical person. I've loved life. You only get one, no matter what the fundys say.
@legend3061 All I was trying to say was what seemed to be Maude philosophy: Live life to the fullest. Don't be afraid to be different, even if it means being a lone wolf sometimes. Don't let material things enslave you. I never had much money. In fact, sometimes I was totally broke and homeless for brief periods. Be brave and drink life in. Don't just go through the safe, usual, robotic reactions TO life. Engage it, allow youself to even give up control sometimes for a new experience. Peace.
@0LilyPad0 romance between an older man and a younger woman is often portrayed on tv yet no one comments on that. I wonder why people find a romance between an older woman and a younger man sick. Is it that the world thinks females are only valuable for their looks? Kind of makes me sad to think about.
most people miss the moment near the end when harold and maud are sidding gazing out to see...harold notices some numbers tatooed on mauds arm and asks about them she bruses him off with a iit dosent matter remark...but it does matter it is the reason for her force of nature spirit...and her decicion to die at 80.....beautyful movie...
this movies about an old lady fucking a teen dude? and i saw him mutilate himself multiple times but hes still ok, so im assumeing drugs are involved in the movie... it looks pretty interesting... can anyone summarize this movie?
@wildboy789789 Nah, not that. Harold is a sad rich boy, so oppressed by his mother that he fakes killing himself over and over to get her to notice HIM, not just what she wants him to be. He's all emo and attends funerals of people he doesn't know for fun. He meets an old lady who does the same thing, but as they become friends, he finds she has a different reason: she loves LIFE, and celebrates death as part of it. After they meet.. gotta watch it. BEST MOVIE EVER.
@wildboy789789 It's not about superficial things like age differences. It is about someone whose feelings have been ignored so long that all he can do to feel alive is obsess on death, but someone who is preparing for death brings him back to life. You really should see the whole thing.
When I first watched this movie all the way through, I knew I loved it. The music brought me into it. Then I fell in love with Harold and Maude. I hope I find someone who loves me as much as they loved each other. . .
their on the dvd version in trailers of the movie NOT in the actual movie at least the dvd i have had for at least five years is that way ...but it thought the same when i saw the trailers :)
Would you believe that I saw this movie when I was 5, with my 4 brothers and sisters in Snowmass Colorado on vacation. I loved the death scenes and the music, but didn't get the true meaning until I watched it years later. Cat, Bud and Ruth... what a combination.
When this movie was released, I was like Harold. Now, pushing 60, I'm more like Maude. I wouldn't change a moment in this movie, and I wouldn't change a moment in my life. Thank you, Harold and Maude.
My grandparents took me to see this when I was four years old.....Grandpa died 15 years ago.....tomorrow we scatter grandma's ashes....weren't they cool to show me such a timeless little masterpiece.....at such a tender age...all of us?
Comma, how many young guys out there will be as open to a relationship w/ an older woman like Maude? Not many, if any, I'd say..they can't see the beauty that is within.A shame 'cause I'm looking,:) I was a young woman when this movie first came out, so many yrs. ago.
I am a 38yr old guy and i have the hots for a 48yr old woman i work with.I gave her a dvd of this film but she was not too impressed with the idea of Harold shagging old Maude.Shame.Still like her though.
Perhaps she reacted that way exactly because she likes you too, but was afraid you'd see through her if she admitted liking H & M! Since you're the younger one, maybe she would like you to start.
And remember, we live while we live, and it's now we can love. There's nothing to lose by being oneself. The truth about love is something to be proud of.
I love a man much older than me. And it was great to just be honest and tell him. We're happy now.
I think I've seen this movie over 20 times; it touches me on so many levels; the combination of the touching music and the raw emotion of love and appreciating life at its most simplest and most beautiful
I don't even know how many times I've seen this movie...
Ever since I first saw this movie in the 70's...I have always wanted to be just like Maude. Her character in this movie just makes you feel happy about living and loving life.
The part where she saves the tree is so priceless. Maude is my idol!!!
I agree...if there was a Harold and Maude convention...I would attend. We need more Maudes in this world. I am trying my best to be a Maude!!!
Absolutely..I'm getting there I'm 58 yrs. old and a free spirit. Don't steel cars though! Thanx so much for posting, I'll make it a fav. Peace and love...:) *M

I don't think any disrespect was intended by the comment above. Its reference to 2:06 from this clip, which is really a comment on the Vietnam war. Watch it again and you will see.
P.S. - Whether you agree or disagree with the war in Afghanistan, doesn't matter. Harold & Maude is not really the forum to debate this issue.
Not attempting to mind-ead what he MEANT to say, I am justly curious is to if f*ck war means f*ck war, or just "f*ck the vietnam war, where we went to war for FAR different reasons than we ever went to war before or since; or possibly f*ck Iraq and Afghanistan as well. I have commented on the joy and wonder of this fine movie, and I will treat your request for me to limit my observations with the respect it deserves.
i know this kind of love. my boyfriend is moving over 500 miles all alone just to be with me. hes a great person and i couldnt imagine life without him,
A wonderful film & I agree totally that Cat Stevens was the perfect choice to do the soundtrack...his gentle & poignant songs superbly compliment the scenes. I simply can't imagine this movie without his music.
That's sad (of mr. Islam). But well, why doesn't this surprise me.. "get together regardless of your age, race, creed, color or national origin" isn't really the muslim way of life... I see it around me in continental Europe - religion kills, and in particular muslims generally don't (yet) favor individuality... not to mention individual women.. not to mention individual jewish women...
This is sort of an annoying comment but since I've already shared my deeper thoughts on this movie in other videos...I really have the desire to say that Harold has the most attractive speaking voice in the whole world and that I love him. <3
Ruth Gordon is totally awesome in this movie. When I was young and first saw this movie...I thought..."I want to be this woman when I get old". She has such a take on life.
Wish the world was as awesome as she hoped it would be.
Cat Stevens music...only these songs could make this movie all the more awesome!
what i love about this movie is how it is the opposite of forcefulness and shocking. instead it implies a way of life that may make anyone have meaning, and the best thing about it is everyone could take something different from the message and change their own life with it. for me the message is that you can find love in the most unexpected places, and all you have to do is open your eyes.
Beauberry, Thanx for the song. :) It sounds like U watched the movie. It's the most awesome movie ever! It says everything, and like U said, how many of us have known this kind of love? Non- judgemental, just showing you true happiness. I love Maude's spirit so much. If only there were like a million more of her in every country. running governments. I doubt war would even be an issue! Hugzzz
I adore Ruth Gordon. And I guess noone can watch this film without seeing things differently. Luckily I saw it first when I was 13 - it gave me the right direction for life!
In my humble opinion, this is the most perfect movie ever made... everything is pure perfection. And the more times you watch it, the more you pick up. I can't even put into words how much I LOVE this movie... love, LOVE, love :)
Such the ever cult classic. I could watch this movie a million times...and learn something new each time. I thought it was brilliant that Cat Stevens is the whole soundtrack. Perfect combination.
I was 32 when a 17 year old "man" introduced me to this movie ~ and Johnny Got his Gun ~ and we both loved Pink Floyd and Led Zepplin ~ and I felt safer with him than anyone I ever had in the world ~ and I think I loved him more deeply (spiritually) than I ever have anyone in this world. It was my misgivings for the age difference that caused us to part ~ I couldn't "rob" him of his younger years, yet he was more mature than I. Today I could be jailed for that. LOVE is LOVE!!
LOL .. it happens all the time in other countries It's usually the guys having a dream of being with an older female. Why is it okay for men to be 30 years plus older than women, but it's not okay for it to be the other way around? He became my closest friend back then and what I learned from him about what teenage boys go through when they're trying to "detach" from their mothers helped me when I had my son. I'm not ashamed of my life .. I'm 61 and it's been very interesting. ;o)
I never said anything about older men being with younger girls, so if you're just generally questioning why that is okay, and not the other way around, then ok, I notice that too, but if you're directly asking me, well since I never said anything about that, you don't know what I think about it.
Also, I just meant that it's creepy that he's 17 and that would be underage I think.
Well, maybe not when you were younger..but yeah, I know it's just the law and 18 wouldn't be that different, but for some reason, 17 just sounds a lot younger than 18 to me. Maybe he was just a mature 17 year old, but the ones I see would make it weird.
I didn't mean to make this so long...oh yeah, and I hope I don't sound rude because I wasn't trying to just now
This movie is about an innocence that does not often exist anymore. Its about just being yourself and finding that one person who not only appreciates that but encourages it...My favorite of all time!
I'm glad I took a moment to watch this movie. I am glad I did because I loved it. I loved the acting and directing. Did anyone notice that Was Anderson seems to have the same eye as this director?
i agree xlieswritteninbloodx. it's always been one of my favorite movies of all time. tho it makes me cry (especially when they show Maude's numbers on her arm - which most people don't catch since that scene happens very fast) & also i cry at the end too everytime i watch it, even tho i've watched it like 1000 times. such an amazing & beautiful movie. i recommend this to everyone!
& this is a very well made video in tribute to Harold & Maude. great work you did here ostmusicmix. i faved it

I see it around me in continental Europe - religion kills, and in particular muslims generally don't (yet) favor individuality... not to mention individual women.. not to mention individual jewish women...
Anyway. Great song and movie.

Hugzzz

LOVE is LOVE!!

it's sort of interesting in movies but in real life, it's creepy, so i wouldn't go telling people about this if i were you
ultravirgin 2 years ago
LOL .. it happens all the time in other countries It's usually the guys having a dream of being with an older female. Why is it okay for men to be 30 years plus older than women, but it's not okay for it to be the other way around? He became my closest friend back then and what I learned from him about what teenage boys go through when they're trying to "detach" from their mothers helped me when I had my son. I'm not ashamed of my life .. I'm 61 and it's been very interesting. ;o)
worldpeaz 2 years ago 2
I never said anything about older men being with younger girls, so if you're just generally questioning why that is okay, and not the other way around, then ok, I notice that too, but if you're directly asking me, well since I never said anything about that, you don't know what I think about it.
Also, I just meant that it's creepy that he's 17 and that would be underage I think.
ultravirgin 2 years ago
Well, maybe not when you were younger..but yeah, I know it's just the law and 18 wouldn't be that different, but for some reason, 17 just sounds a lot younger than 18 to me. Maybe he was just a mature 17 year old, but the ones I see would make it weird.
I didn't mean to make this so long...oh yeah, and I hope I don't sound rude because I wasn't trying to just now

This movie is about an innocence that does not often exist anymore. Its about just being yourself and finding that one person who not only appreciates that but encourages it...My favorite of all time!

i agree xlieswritteninbloodx. it's always been one of my favorite movies of all time. tho it makes me cry (especially when they show Maude's numbers on her arm - which most people don't catch since that scene happens very fast) & also i cry at the end too everytime i watch it, even tho i've watched it like 1000 times. such an amazing & beautiful movie. i recommend this to everyone!
& this is a very well made video in tribute to Harold & Maude. great work you did here ostmusicmix. i faved it
